Free-agent cornerback Jason McCourty announced on Instagram on Friday that he's retiring from football after 13 seasons in the NFL. The former 2009 sixth-round pick out of Rutgers made an impact everywhere he played. McCourty begin his career with the Tennessee Titans and spent eight seasons with them before joining the Cleveland Browns in 2017. He then spent three years with the New England Patriots and played in seven games due to a foot injury with the Miami Dolphins in 2021. McCourty will end his excellent NFL career with 744 tackles (598 solo), 18 tackles for loss, one sack, 18 interceptions (one four a touchdown), 108 passes defensed, nine forced fumbles and five fumble recoveries (two TDs) in 173 regular season games (141 starts).
The Miami Dolphins are not expected to re-sign cornerback Jason McCourty this offseason. McCourty won't survive the new coaching regime in Miami after playing in just seven games in 2021 due to injury in his first season with the Dolphins. The 34-year-old veteran finished last year with 21 tackles (10 solo) and two passes defensed in his seven games. McCourty probably won't have a very robust free-agent market, but he could land a cheap deal for a team in need of defensive back depth this offseason. He hasn't had an interception since 2019 and also doesn't have over 40 combined tackles in a single season since 2018 with the New England Patriots.
The Miami Dolphins signed veteran free-agent cornerback Jason McCourty to an undisclosed one-year deal on Thursday, according to a source. The 12-year veteran will reunite with head coach Brian Flores after the two worked together with the New England Patriots. The 33-year-old McCourty will give Miami a veteran presence in the secondary and is expected to be behind both Xavien Howard and Byron Jones on the cornerback depth chart. McCourty had 115 solo tackles, two interceptions, 19 passes defensed and a forced fumble in the last three seasons with the Patriots. He was drafted in the sixth round in 2009 by the Tennessee Titans and spent eight seasons with them before a one-year stint with the Cleveland Browns.
The New York Giants are hosting former New England Patriots defensive back Jason McCourty on a visit on Friday, according to a source. The Giants secondary already boasts a Rutgers alum (where McCourty went to school) in Logan Ryan and two former Tennessee Titans players in Ryan and Adoree' Jackson. McCourty has spent the last three years in New England with his twin brother Devin. The 33-year-old has played under current Giants head coach Joe Judge and still owns a home in New Jersey. McCourty started 11 games for New England last year and had 42 tackles and three passes defensed. In 137 career games in his 13-year career, he has 18 interceptions and 723 tackles. He would join an already much-improved Giants secondary if he were to sign.
New England Patriots cornerback Jason McCourty (groin) has been ruled out for the second straight game for Week 13 against the Texans on Sunday night. It's a downgrade for New England's defense against a Houston wideout corps featuring DeAndre Hopkins, Will Fuller and Kenny Stills. The Pats defense has been strong all year, but they won't have as much upside on Sunday night against a Texans offense that can put up points quickly. McCourty has 40 total tackles, and one interception in 10 games this season.
The New England Patriots re-signed cornerback Jason McCourty to an undisclosed two-year deal on Wednesday, a source told NFL Network's Mike Garafolo. McCourty played a pivotal role in New England's Super Bowl run last year and returns to a defense that will mostly be the same in 2019. He had 70 total tackles, a forced fumble and interception in 16 regular season games in his first year in New England in 2018.
The Cleveland Browns are releasing cornerback Jason McCourty on Thursday, according to sources. McCourty appeared in 14 games with Cleveland in 2017, his only season with the team. He was far and away the team's best cornerback and finished the season with 65 total tackles, two forced fumbles, three interceptions and 14 passes defended. The move comes as somewhat of a surprise, but according to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, the Browns front office wants to "reboot with their own guys." Perhaps playing into the decision is the fact that McCourty was one of the players to voice his displeasure to the media after current general manager John Dorsey made his infamous statement in December that the previous regime didn't get enough "real players" in Cleveland. McCourty will certainly draw the interest of several teams who are looking to shore up their secondaries.
Cleveland Browns defensive back Jason McCourty will be traded to the New England Patriots, according to Mary Kay Cabot of The Cleveland Plain Dealer. McCourty is being traded to the Patriots along with the Browns 2018 seventh-round draft pick for the Patriots' 2018 sixth-round draft pick. It was thought that McCourty would be released, but the Browns found a trade partner instead. The Patriots will now have the McCourty twins, as his brother Devon is a stalwart in the secondary for New England. Jason played for the Titans from 2009-2016 before spending the 2017 season with the Browns, accumulating 65 tackles, 14 passes defended, three interceptions and his first pick-six.
The Cleveland Browns have removed veterans Kenny Britt and Jason McCourty from the final injury report ahead of their Week 10 game with the Detroit Lions. Britt had been limited throughout the week with knee and groin issues while McCourty missed a few weeks with an ankle sprain. Both players signed with the Browns as free agents this past offseason. Britt has been a bust, catching just 10 passes while struggling with drops and getting on the coaching staff's bad side in several instances. McCourty, on the other hand, has been the team's best cornerback. Look for McCourty to shadow Marvin Jones in what should be a fun matchup to watch on Sunday.
Kenny Britt, Jason McCourty, Jabrill Peppers All Questionable
The Cleveland Browns have several key players listed as questionable as they get set to take on the Tennessee Titans in Week 7. Kenny Britt, the team's most experienced receiver, is in danger of missing his third consecutive game. Starting safety and return man Jabrill Peppers is also questionable with a toe issue. The most worrisome injury is that of cornerback Jason McCourty. McCourty twisted his ankle during practice on Thursday and did not participate on Friday. He has been the team's best cornerback by a far measure this season. If he were to miss, give a bump to the Tennessee passing offense in Week 7.
