Las Vegas Raiders tight end Jason Witten is retiring from the NFL and plans to sign a one-day contract to retire as a member of the Dallas Cowboys in March when his deal with the Raiders expires. The 38-year-old played 16 seasons for the Cowboys and spent the 2020 campaign with the Raiders. No tight end in history has played more than his 271 career games, with only Hall of Famer Tony Gonzalez recording more catches and yards at the position. Witten was a third-round pick in 2003 and developed into one of the best tight ends in history. The 11-time Pro Bowler is the Cowboys all-time leader in receptions (1,215) and yards (12,977) and is second in touchdown catches (72). Witten had four 1,000-yard seasons and played in a team-record 255 games, including a franchise-record 245 starts. The future Hall of Famer missed just one game in his career due to a broken jaw as a rookie.
Dallas Cowboys tight end Blake Jarwin will finally get his chance to be the unquestioned TE1 in Dallas this season. With Jason Witten off to Las Vegas to play with the Raiders, Jarwin is at the top of the Cowboys tight end depth chart. Not only did the Cowboys show their confidence in Jarwin by letting Witten go, they also signed him to a four year deal worth almost $25 million. Jarwin has flashed upside before, and he set career highs in catches and yards last season (31 catches, 365 yards, and three touchdowns). He'll be a near every-down player, but the issue will be all the mouths to feed in the Dallas passing game. Jarwin and Witten spoke recently, with Witten maintaining his mentor role with Jarwin, even with the two tight ends now on separate teams.
The Las Vegas Raiders agreed to terms on an undisclosed deal with tight end Jason Witten on Tuesday. Witten came out of retirement in 2019 to record 63 catches for 529 yards and four touchdowns over a full season with Dallas. His illustrious career with the Cowboys comes to an end after 16 seasons, and Witten will surely be in the Hall of Fame when all is said and done. But he definitely looked like a player near the end last year and failed to gain much separation at all in the middle of the field. The Raiders already have Darren Waller as one of their top pass-catchers and also Foster Moreau, so Witten will strictly provide veteran depth. He's an unattractive low-end TE2.
Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten, who will be a free agent this month, is not expected to return next season with the team planning to give restricted free-agent tight end Blake Jarwin a second-round tender offer. Witten worked in the broadcast booth in 2018 but returned in 2019 to catch 63 passes for 529 yards and four touchdowns. He isn't running by anybody these days and was just a low-ceiling, touchdown-dependent TE2 for fantasy owners last year. Jarwin should be in the TE1 conversation with his role in the offense expected to grow in 2020, regardless of whether Witten says in Dallas.
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones made it clear that he wants to re-sign tight end Jason Witten. I feel strongly he wants to play and I think he can play, Jones said. I would hope that he would not ever be anything but a Cowboy. Its meaningful. Hes in the tops right there. I do think he can play. As I sit here right now I think he can make a real contribution to the Cowboys. Witten played 75 percent of the offensive snaps last year and had 63 catches for 529 yards and four touchdowns. But Witten is slow on the field and is getting in the way of Blake Jarwin, who is expected to have a bigger role in 2020. If Witten returns, he'll have to accept a lesser role. Even if he lands somewhere else, the aging veteran is nothing more than a low-upside, touchdown-dependent TE2.
Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten, who will be a free agent next month, wants to play another season and hopes he can remain with the Cowboys. However, Witten understands that he might have to go elsewhere if he wants to play in a 17th NFL season. The veteran tight end has met with new head coach Mike McCarthy and has talked with owners Jerry Jones and executive vice president Stephen Jones. Witten hauled in 63 catches for 529 yards and four touchdowns in 2019 in his return from a one-year absence from the game. He's headed into his age-38 season, and while he can still give something to a team, he won't be anything more than a touchdown-dependent, low-end TE2 if he plays again in 2020 for the Cowboys or another squad.
Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten caught four passes in Week 17, gaining 24 yards. He was targeted four times and caught all four balls thrown his way. Witten and head coach Jason Garrett may have seen their last Cowboys games, although Witten will likely be welcomed back if he decides to return for the 2020 season.
Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten is a low-upside option for Week 17 fantasy lineups. Witten made just two catches for 14 yards in Week 16 and could be in for a similar outing this time around. The Cowboys will likely focus on the running game and their top two wide receivers. Witten always has a chance to come down with a touchdown on short red-zone plays, but there will be plenty of higher-upside options for around the same price in DFS leagues.
Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten made just two catches in Week 16, gaining 14 yards. Witten was only targeted three times in a game where Dak Prescott attempted 44 passes. It was an all-around struggle for the Dallas offense, who will have to show up next week against Washington in a must-win contest.
Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten is a floor option for Week 16 without much of a ceiling. Despite a highlight reel one-handed touchdown catch in Week 15, Witten ended up with just five catches for 36 yards. Without the touchdown, that would have been a floor performance. With touchdowns being so unpredictable and with the Cowboys wide receivers expected to play much more significant roles in this one, Witten is no more than a lower-end TE2.
