The Jacksonville Jaguars signed wide receiver Jaydon Mickens to their active roster from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers practice squad on Tuesday following the season-ending hip injury to Jamal Agnew last Sunday. Marvin Jones Jr. and Laviska Shenault Jr. will be the team's top two receivers going forward, with Laquon Treadwell, Tavon Austin and now Mickens in the mix to fight for No. 3 duties. The 27-year-old Mickens was active for six games with Tampa but never saw a target in their crowded receiver picture. Mickens spent the first two seasons of his career with Jacksonville and caught just six of 11 targets for 77 yards and two touchdowns, which all came in 2017. He's strictly a depth option at wideout for the Jags and can be ignored in fantasy for now.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers cut wide receiver Jaydon Mickens on Monday. The team also released outside linebacker Elijah Ponder from the practice squad, activated offensive lineman John Molchon from Injured Reserve and signed cornerback Blidi Wreh-Wilson to the practice squad. Mickens returned eight punts and five kickoffs on special teams in five games for the Buccaneers this year, but he wasn't targeted at all on offense. In 10 games for Tampa last season, Mickens managed to catch seven of his 10 targets for 58 yards. He has just 13 catches for 135 yards and two touchdowns in his career as mostly a return man on special teams.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receivers Jaydon Mickens and Justin Watson have seen their stock fall this offseason. Mickens was the primary returner on punts and kickoffs in 2020, but his future is uncertain after the team drafted rookie Jaelon Darden as a potential replacement. And Mickens didn't exactly stand out in return duties last year. He'll need to show more offensive value in order to avoid being a roster casualty in training camp. Watson is also firmly on the roster bubble in a deep receiving room. Nearly all of his value in 2020 also came on special teams with the coverage units. Watson was inactive for three of four playoff games, and his offensive role vanished with Scotty Miller and Tyler Johnson emerging. The 25-year-old had zero targets after Week 4.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers promoted wide receiver Jaydon Mickens to the active roster on Wednesday and placed running back Kenjon Barner on Injured Reserve in a corresponding move. Mickens has been more of a special teams contributor for the Bucs this year than an offensive threat, catching just seven passes on 10 targets for 58 yards while being buried on the depth chart behind Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, Antonio Brown, Scotty Miller and Justin Watson. The 26-year-old has returned 15 punts for 99 yards and 12 kickoffs for 289 total yards in nine games for the team this year. Mickens will likely continue to operate mainly on special teams for the rest of the season, so fantasy managers can ignore him.
Jaydon Mickens Rejoins Buccaneers After Clearing Waivers
Tampa Bay Buccaneers kick/punt returner Jaydon Mickens had been placed on waivers Monday, but just a day later, he rejoined the team's practice squad after not being claimed. Mickens has combined for 388 yards on 27 returns this year, although his role on special teams appears to have been ceded to Kenjon Barner. With a surplus of options at wide receiver, Mickens has made just seven catches for 58 yards this season, making him more integral to the Buccaneers Defense/special teams unit than as an individual asset. Irrespective of who returns kicks, Tampa Bay has emerged as a premier D/ST due to the stingy nature of its defense, particularly against the run. At this stage, Mickens will first have to earn his way back onto the active roster before meriting fantasy relevance.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are waiving wide receiver/kick returner Jaydon Mickens on Monday, according to a source. Mickens has been productive for the team this year, catching seven passes and returning 21 kicks/punts. The 26-year-old hasn't played since Week 9, though, and had just 58 receiving yards on his seven receptions this season. Mickens didn't play at all in 2019 and has only 13 catches for 135 yards and two touchdowns in three NFL seasons, with his first two coming in Jacksonville. Behind receivers Mike Evans, Chris Godwin and Antonio Brown, Scotty Miller, Justin Watson and rookie Tyler Johnson make up Tampa's wideout depth with Mickens no longer on the roster.
Jaydon Mickens, Cyril Grayson Put On COVID-19 List
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers placed wide receivers Jaydon Mickens and Cyril Grayson on the Reserve/COVID-19 list on Saturday. Mickens has served as the team's primary punt and kickoff returner this year, while Grayson was on the team's practice squad. Mickens will not travel with the team to play against Carolina in Week 10. Wide receiver Scotty Miller, cornerback Sean Murphy-Bunting and safety Antoine Winfield Jr. are all options as kick returners with Mickens out, as are receivers Antonio Brown and Justin Watson. It's unclear if Mickens and Grayson actually tested positive for COVID-19 or if they were deemed high-risk close contacts of someone else who was positive.
According to First Coast News reporter Mike Kaye, Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Jaydon Mickens has made the team's final roster. After Marqise Lee's season-ending knee injury, the battle for the fifth receiver spot heated up, with Mickens beating out a host of other options due to his versatility and abilities as a return man. Mickens isn't worth rostering in any formats at this point since Jacksonville has four strong receiving options ahead of him on the depth chart.
Jacksonville Jaguars running back Chris Ivory and wide receiver Jaydon Mickens (hamstring) are both inactive for the Divisional Round game against the Steelers. Ivory is a healthy scratch, meaning T.J. Yeldon will serve as the main backup to rookie Leonard Fournette. With Fournette seeing most of the work in the backfield, Yeldon isn't much of a fantasy option. Mickens was the fifth receiver, at best, for the Jags, so he wouldn't have much of a role even if active.
Jaydon Mickens Questionable, Marcedes Lewis Good To Go
Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Jaydon Mickens (hamstring) was limited in practice all week and is questionable to face the Steelers on Sunday. Tight end Marcedes Lewis (ankle) practiced in full the last two days and was taken off the final injury report for the Divisional Round. Mickens is the team's fifth receiver with Marqise Lee and Allen Hurns finally back from injuries, so he wouldn't have been a fantasy option even if healthy. Lewis will be fine, but he wasn't really a fantasy option throughout the year, so he won't be against a Steelers defense that was tough on tight ends this year.
