The Seattle Seahawks agreed with free-agent cornerback Justin Coleman on an undisclosed one-year deal on Wednesday, according to a source. Coleman was with Seattle in 2017 and 2018, so it will be a reunion for the two sides. The 28-year-old had 27 tackles (20 solo), two interceptions and three passes defensed in 16 games (four starts) for the Miami Dolphins in 2021. Although he hasn't done much the last two years with Miami and the Detroit Lions, Coleman will be competing for a starting cornerback job with the Seahawks this summer. In seven NFL seasons, Coleman has accumulated 238 tackles (187 solo), six tackles for loss, five QB hits, two sacks, six interceptions (two for scores), 44 passes defensed, four forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries (one TD) in 95 games (33 starts).
Former Detroit Lions cornerback Justin Coleman agreed to terms with the Miami Dolphins on a one-year deal worth up to $2.75 million, according to a source. The Dolphins also signed former New England Patriots defensive tackle Adam Butler to a two-year, $9.5 million deal on Wednesday. The 27-year-old Coleman had 84 tackles, three forced fumbles and one interception in his two years playing for the Lions. Butler has some familiarity with head coach Brian Flores from their time together in New England. He spent his first four seasons with the Patriots and recorded 15 total sacks as an interior defensive lineman. Butler has a high motor and has been reliable, missing only one regular season game in his time with the Patriots.
The Detroit Lions plan to release cornerback Justin Coleman in the coming days, according to a source. Coleman, who is one of the highest-paid slot corners in the NFL at $9 million annually, will head back to the open market. The soon-to-be 28-year-old didn't really live up to his high price in his two seasons with the Lions, recording 69 solo tackles (three for loss), one interception, 14 passes defensed, three forced fumbles and one fumble recovery in 27 games (16 starts). As a team, Detroit allowed the most yards per pass and the third-most passing yards per game in 2020. The Lions will save $4.9 million against the salary cap by cutting Coleman, who ranked 111th at his position, according to Pro Football Focus.
The Detroit Lions are placing cornerback Justin Coleman (hamstring) on Injured Reserve because of a hamstring strain that he suffered in the Week 1 loss to the Bears on Sunday, according to a source. The hope is that he's ready to return when he's eligible in three weeks. Coleman had one pass defensed in the season-opening loss. The good news is he'll be back this year, but the bad news is that Detroit faces the division-rival Packers in Week 2 after Aaron Rodgers went off against Minnesota in the regular season opener. Hopefully for the Lions, rookie Jeff Okudah will be able to return for that one to try and slow down Rodgers and wide receiver Davante Adams.
Free-agent cornerback Justin Coleman (Seahawks) has agreed to terms on a four-year, $36 million deal with the Detroit Lions. He will be reunited with head coach Matt Patricia, who was Coleman's defensive coordinator during his time with the New England Patriots. The Lions were already pretty solid against the pass, allowing just 224.9 yards per game through the air to rank eighth in the NFL. Coleman is an upgrade over Nevin Lawson, who was cut loose by the team last week. The Lions are still more of a No. 2 fantasy DST in most formats.
