The Indianapolis Colts have visited and worked out with free-agent quarterbacks Matt Cassel and Brandon Weeden this week, in addition to Brock Osweiler, according to a source. With Andrew Luck hanging up his cleats last weekend, the Colts want someone other than Phillip Walker backing up Jacoby Brissett in 2019. Cassel, Weeden and Osweiler are low-end backup options, but at least they have some real NFL experience.
Detroit Lions quarterback Matt Cassel has won the preseason battle to be the teams backup quarterback, as Jake Rudock was cut during Saturdays wave of roster cuts. Cassel and Rudock had been competing to back up Matthew Stafford this preseason. Cassel was the front-runner entering camp based off of his experience in the league. Meanwhile, Rudock had the better preseason numbers, but its clear the team values Cassels experience. If anything were to happen to Stafford this season, the offense would take an immense hit with Cassel at the helm. However, if youre in a league that rosters a team quarterback, Cassel can serve a purpose in the event of a Stafford injury.
Detroit Lions quarterback Matt Cassel drew the start for the team's preseason opener, as Matthew Stafford did not dress. Cassel completed 10 of 18 passes for 81 yards. He was also sacked three times. He led the first three drives until the Lions scored a touchdown in the second quarter. Jake Rudock then replaced him for the majority of the game until Cassel was brought back out for the team's last drive when they trailed 16-10. Then with just 25 seconds remaining and Detroit driving down the field, Cassel was sacked and he fumbled. Oakland recovered it, ending Detroit's chances.
Detroit Lions quarterback Matt Cassel is expected to win the backup job over Jake Rudock. Rudock will be entering his third year behind Matthew Stafford, but Cassel has 13 years of NFL experience, including four seasons with head coach Matt Patricia from their time in New England. Cassel played in just parts of six games with the Titans the last two seasons and can obviously be ignored in fantasy unless Stafford is injured.
Jake Rudock, Matt Cassel to Compete for Backup QB Job
The Detroit Lions appear to be giving equal time to quarterbacks Jake Rudock and Matt Cassel in practice so far. Those two will compete to back up Matthew Stafford next season. Neither will hold much, if any, fantasy relevance, barring an injury to Stafford himself.
The Detroit Lions have signed veteran free-agent quarterbackMatt Cassel to a one-year contract. Cassel will come in and compete with Jake Rudock to back up Matthew Stafford. Cassel will not hold any fantasy value unless there is a regular season injury to Stafford. Even then, he would barely be playable, even in two-QB leagues.
The Detroit Lions are signing free-agent quarterback Matt Cassel on Wednesday, according to sources. Cassel has experience with Lions new head coach Matt Patricia and general manager Bob Quinn from their time in New England. Cassel has played in parts of just six games the last two seasons with the Titans and will compete to hold the clipboard for Matthew Stafford in Detroit in 2018.
The Tennessee Titans are releasing quarterback Matt Cassel and wide receiver Eric Weems on Friday. Cassel made one start in place of Marcus Mariota last year, going 21-for-32 for 141 yards with a touchdown. Weems saw very limited offensive snaps and hauled in just one catch for five yards in 2017. He has a whopping two catches in the last three years. Both players are well off the fantasy radar.
With starting quarterback Marcus Mariota (hamstring) inactive, veteran Matt Cassel got the start in the Week 5 loss to the Miami Dolphins. Cassel threw for 141 yards and a touchdown, as well as having a long touchdown called back due to a questionable offensive pass interference. Cassel's performance was nothing spectacular, but he was pretty efficient in his relief effort. Fantasy owners of any Titans players can only hope for a speedy recovery for Mariota as this type of offensive performance is likely to be commonplace with Cassel at the helm.
Tennessee Titans quarterback Matt Cassel is expected to start Week 5 against the Dolphins. With Marcus Mariota sidelined by a hamstring injury, Cassel will get the nod. Cassel struggles off the bench last week in Houston, and his presence is a big downgrade for Tennessee's offense. It also makes the Dolphins DST an interesting streaming and DFS option. Mariota could miss multiple games, but fantasy owners should not consider Cassel as a replacement.
