Giants Sign Rod Smith

The New York Giants signed free-agent running back Rod Smith to an undisclosed deal on Wednesday. He spent most of the last four seasons with the Cowboys and will compete for a backup role behind Saquon Barkley with Wayne Gallman, Paul Perkins, Elijah Penny, Robert Martin and Jon Hilliman. Smith was mostly a backup to Ezekiel Elliott in Dallas and is unlikely to have any fantasy relevance with his new team in the same division. He has 101 career rushing attempts for 364 yards (3.6 average) and five touchdowns.

Rod Smith To Start Against Giants

Dallas Cowboys running back Rod Smith will officially start in the backfield in Week 17 against the Giants with the team resting Ezekiel Elliott in a game that means nothing. It will be Smith's second career start, but Darius Jackson is also expected to see a healthy workload. Smith is a good value pick as a DFS sleeper against New York to close out the season despite having only 32 carries for 92 yards (2.9 yards per carry) this season as Zeke's backup.

Rod Smith Runs for 49 Yards on Saturday

Dallas Cowboys running back Rod Smith ran the ball 13 times for 49 yards in Saturday's preseason game. His longest rush was a 16 yard run. Smith is the backup to Ezekiel Elliott, and while he'll have a role this season, he won't make fantasy waves unless Elliott is forced to miss time. He's a solid handcuff for Elliott owners, but not much more.

Tyron Smith Will Not Need Surgery

Dallas Cowboys offensive tackle Tyron Smith (knee) will not require offseason surgery, according to executive vice president Stephen Jones. Smith dealt with a knee issue late in the year, but apparently it was nothing serious. A four-time All-Pro selection, Smith remains one of the league's top blind-side protectors.

Rod Smith Listed as Questionable for Week 17

Dallas Cowboys running back Rod Smith (illness) is listed as questionable for Week 17 against the Philadelphia Eagles. With Ezekiel Elliott back and 120 yards away from a 1,000-yard season, it's hard to see Smith getting much play even if he feels well enough to take the field. Still, he did serve as Elliott'sNo. 2 in Week 16 over Alfred Morris, so there may be some points to chase there. Either way, Smith is a low-upside option for Week 17.

Rod Smith Works Behind Ezekiel Elliott

Dallas Cowboys running back Rod Smith worked behind Ezekiel Elliott in Week 16, carrying the ball two times for 10 yards and catching the ball three times for 23 yards. With Elliott back from his suspension, Alfred Morris took a seat and did not see a single snap on the field. Smith still mixed in for a change of pace now and then, but nowhere near enough to be considered a realistic fantasy option for Week 17. This is Elliott's backfield as long as he's in uniform.

Rod Smith Returns to Fantasy Irrelevance in Week 16

Dallas Cowboys running back Rod Smith will return to the bench in Week 16. With Ezekiel Elliott returning from his suspension, both Smith and Alfred Morris will head back to the bench. Elliott will resume his bell-cow role and will be an elite fantasy option. Smith could still mix in for a few passing downs or for a change of pace, but he won't have consistent enough touches to return any fantasy value.

Rod Smith Vultures a Touchdown in Week 15

Dallas Cowboys running back Rod Smith ran the ball seven times for 13 yards and a touchdown, adding three catches for 21 yards in Week 15. His touchdown was a goal-line carry that he was able to run in. Smith will return to fantasy irrelevance next week when Ezekiel Elliott returns from his six-game suspension.

Rod Smith Remains a Risky Fantasy Option for Week 15

Dallas Cowboys running back Rod Smith remains a risky fantasy option for Week 15 against the Oakland Raiders. Smith has some nice upside, and he showed it last week with a huge game, but he also has a very low floor. He's been relying on the fourth quarter to make all of his noise (72 percent of his fantasy points since Ezekiel Elliott has been suspended have come in the final frame). That's certainly unsustainable and could leave fantasy owners out to dry if the game script doesn't call for Smith's heavy involvement. He's more of a DFS play than a fantasy semi-finals play this week.

Rod Smith Explodes for a Huge Game in Week 14

Dallas Cowboys running back Rod Smith exploded for a huge performance in a Week 14 win over the New York Giants. Smith ran the ball six times for 47 yards and a touchdown and caught five passes for 115 yards and another touchdown. It was the Smithshow in the fourth quarter, as Smith caught a short pass and ran it into the end zone from 81 yards out then ran the ball into the end zone from 15 yards away a bit later. It was a career game for Smith and one he is unlikely to repeat any time soon.
