The New York Giants have agreed to bring back wide receiver Russell Shepard on an undisclosed deal on Wednesday. He's expected to re-sign in the coming days. He had 10 catches for 188 yards and two touchdowns in his first year with New York last year, but he was mainly a special teams contributor and is unlikely to carry any fantasy appeal in 2019. He'll be behind Golden Tate, Sterling Shepard, Bennie Fowler, Cody Latimer and Corey Coleman on the receiver depth chart.
Odell Beckham Jr., Russell Shepard Out Of Practice
New York Giants wide receivers Odell Beckham Jr. (quadriceps) and Russell Shepard (ankle) both missed practice on Thursday. OBJ was on the side working with a trainer and catching balls from the Jugs machine, but his status doesn't look good for Week 16 against the Colts. Beckham could miss his third straight game. If both he and Shepard sit out, Sterling Shepard and tight end Evan Engram would be the top two receiving threats against an underrated Colts defense. Don't plan on having Beckham for your fantasy championship matchups.
New York Giants wide receiver Russell Shepard (neck) is questionable for Monday night against the Falcons. Shepard has just four catches on eight targets for 61 yards in five games this year, so he wasn't on the fantasy radar to begin with, but his role was set to increase with Cody Latimer on Injured Reserve. Rookie Jawill Davis or Bennie Fowler could serve as the third wideout behind Odell Beckham Jr. and Sterling Shepard on Monday.
New York Giants tight end Evan Engram (knee) and wide receiver Russell Shepard (neck) both missed practice on Wednesday and have been ruled out for Thursday night against the Eagles. Engram was limited the two previous days, so he has a great shot at returning next week, where he'll be back on the TE1 radar. Shepard missed practice the last two days after catching a season-high three passes on four targets for 52 yards in Week 5. He's not on the fantasy radar. Rhett Ellison and Scott Simonson should continue to handle tight end duties with Engram out, but they aren't starting options for fantasy owners.
Free-agent wide receiver Russell Shepard signed with the New York Giants on Monday, reuniting with former general manager Dave Gettleman from their days in Carolina. Shepard was a bust for the Panthers in 2017 after signing a three-year, $10 million deal after he had just 17 catches for 202 yards and a touchdown. Shepard will likely make more of an impact on special teams for the Giants.
The Buffalo Bills will host free-agent wide receiver Russell Shepard later in the week, according to a league source. Shepard refused to take a pay cut with the Panthers and was released Monday. He made only three starts and finished with 17 catches for 202 yards and one touchdown in 15 games in 2017 and is unlikely to take on a very big role in Buffalo if he signs with them and makes the final roster out of training camp. You can ignore Shepard in fall fantasy drafts.
Carolina Panthers wide receiver Russell Shepard asked for his release and was granted it on Monday after he refused to take a pay cut, according to sources. The move will save the team a little more than $2.1 million against the salary cap. Shepard didn't have much of an impact in 2017 with Carolina, catching just 17 passes for 202 yards and one touchdown, which came in Week 1. He's unlikely to latch on with another team and contribute for fantasy owners.
Cam Newton, Devin Funchess, Russell Shepard Limited Wednesday
Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton (shoulder) and wide receivers Devin Funchess (shoulder) and Russell Shepard (shoulder) were all limited in practice Wednesday. Newton continues to be limited in practice early in the week, but he will play in Week 17 against the Falcons. He fell flat on his face in a great matchup with the Bucs last week after throwing for four touchdowns the week prior. He'll have a good chance of bouncing back against Atlanta's secondary. Funchess has now had two straight down weeks without scoring, but he should have a good chance of bouncing back, assuming his shoulder isn't the reason for his poor performances of late. Shepard should continue to be ignored for fantasy purposes. He wasn't even active in Week 16.
Carolina Panthers wide receivers Devin Funchess (shoulder) and Russell Shepard (shoulder) were both limited in practice Friday and are questionable for Week 16 against the Buccaneers. Funchess is fully expected to suit up in a great matchup against the non-existent Tampa secondary. As quarterback Cam Newton's favorite target in the passing game, Funchess remains a strong WR2 despite his dud last weekend. Shepard has been a non-factor all year in the offense and should be avoided, even if he plays.
Devin Funchess, Russell Shepard Out Again Thursday
Carolina Panthers wide receivers Devin Funchess (shoulder) and Russell Shepard (shoulder) both are missing practice for the second straight day Thursday. It's not a good sign that neither receiver has practiced yet this week, but Funchess hasn't seen much practice time in recent weeks and continues to play through his injuries. If Funchess is ready to play, he'll be a no-brainer must-start in a juicy matchup with the Bucs in Week 16. Funchess has been quarterback Cam Newton's go-to target through the air, although he posted a dud last weekend. Expect Funchess to bounce back if he's active. He'll likely need to at least put in a limited practice Friday. Shepard hasn't had much of a role for Carolina this year and can be ignored.
