Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Sidney Jones IV finished the team's offseason workouts with a nice showing at mandatory minicamp. He was in position to intercept a pass intended for wide receiver Tee Higgins in a 7-on-7 period, which is a great sign for a Bengals secondary that signed Jones for veteran depth behind cornerbacks Chidobe Awuzie, Cam Taylor-Britt and Mike Hilton. The 27-year-old is with his fifth different team in seven NFL seasons after signing a one-year deal with the Bengals back in March. He played in only 10 games last year with the Las Vegas Raiders and Seattle Seahawks and finished with 12 tackles (seven solo) and one pass defensed.
Free-agent cornerback Sidney Jones IV is expected to sign with the Raiders. Jones, who was recently released by the Seahawks, has accumulated 147 total tackles, 29 passes defensed, and four interceptions since being drafted in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft. With Vegas allowing 255 passing yards per game in 2022-23, the team could certainly use all the help it can get. With that said, it's unknown how much work Jones will receive for his new team early on, so a potential fantasy impact may not be immediate.
After attempting to trade cornerback Sidney Jones at the deadline on Tuesday, the Seattle Seahawks waived him. Jones, a second-round pick by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2017 out of the University of Washington, will hit the open market after playing in just three games in his second season in Seattle. He played just 45 defensive snaps in those three contests and had five tackles (four solo). The 26-year-old also missed the Week 8 win over the New York Giants due to a groin injury, so he'll need to prove his health in order to latch on with another club. Jones had a career-high 66 tackles (45 solo) and 10 passes defensed in 16 games (11 starts) in his first year with the Seahawks in 2021.
The Jacksonville Jaguars re-signed cornerback Sidney Jones to an undisclosed deal on Tuesday, according to a source. Jones played in nine games last year (six starts) and played at a high level for the team's secondary. A second-round pick by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2017, Jones signed to the Jaguars practice squad in September after being released. He joined the team's active roster in mid-September and moved into the starting lineup in Week 5. The 24-year-old registered 25 tackles and a career-high nine passes defensed, two interceptions and a forced fumble in 2020. Jacksonville also re-signed cornerback Tre Herndon last week and also re-signed veteran guard/center Tyler Shatley. In addition to Herndon and Jones, the Jags brought in former Seahawks cornerback Shaquill Griffin.
Sidney Jones Expected to Serve as the Primary Slot Cornerback
Philadelphia Eagles defensive back Sidney Jones is expected to play as the primary slot cornerback this season, according to a source. Ronald Darby and Jalen Mills will be the outside starters, with Jones playing inside. Jones barely played in his 2017 rookie season due to an Achilles injury, but he's reportedly been excellent at OTAs. He should boost an already strong Eagles defense.
Philadelphia Eagles rookie cornerback Sidney Jones (Achilles) is still not healthy enough to rejoin his teammates in practice. Jones was the second-round pick for the Eagles in the draft this season, but he tore his Achilles tendon at the University of Washington's pro day early in the spring. The Eagles were certainly never expecting him to make a huge impact his rookie year, but they would have loved to see him at least get some practice in. He'll remain on the reserve/Non-Football Injury list for the foreseeable future.
