Sony Michel To Retire

Los Angeles Rams running back Sony Michel informed head coach Sean McVay that he is retiring. Michel, taken in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft, has appeared in 65 games for the Patriots, Rams, and Chargers, totaling 3,243 rushing yards and 20 touchdowns. However, he saw most of his trips to the end zone occur in his first two seasons. The 28-year-old will end his career as a two-time Super Bowl champion. But Michel's retirement means even less competition for Cam Akers, who has a lock on the No. 1 spot atop the depth chart.

Sony Michel Signs With Rams

Running back Sony Michel is signing with the Los Angeles Rams. Michel was cut in the preseason by the Miami Dolphins last year and then was let go by the Los Angeles Chargers last December. The 28-year-old was on the Rams roster during its Super Bowl 56 win, so he'll have familiarity with Sean McVay's system heading into 2023. Michel rushed 208 times for 845 yards and four touchdowns in 2021 with the Rams, adding 21 receptions for 128 yards and another score. Cam Akers should still be viewed as the team's primary running back, but Michel could eat into his workload and will immediately draw late-round interest in deep leagues. Assuming Michel makes the roster, he'll likely relegate Kyren Williams and Zach Evans to the RB3 and RB4 roles. The former first-round pick has been a bust since entering the league, but he's been serviceable in spurts.

Sony Michel Waived By The Chargers

Los Angeles Chargers running back Sony Michel was waived by the team on Friday, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. The 27-year-old signed with LA in August after a brief stint with the Dolphins. Yet, he wasn't productive during his tenure with the bolts, compiling only 106 yards off 36 carries in 10 appearances. Michel will likely find a new club at some point before the 2023-24 campaign. However, he's not expected to draw much interest on the fantasy end unless he gets routine work. In a corresponding move, Los Angeles activated defensive end Joey Bosa (groin), who had been sidelined since Week 3 due to a groin tear.

Sony Michel Remains Inactive

Los Angeles Chargers running back Sony Michel is a healthy scratch for Sunday's game against the Las Vegas Raiders. It's his second consecutive absence. He has accrued just 106 rushing yards and 53 receiving yards through 10 games. Expect Michel to remain inactive as long as Austin Ekeler, Isaiah Spiller, and Joshua Kelley are healthy.

Sony Michel Won't Suit Up Week 12

Los Angeles Chargers running back Sony Michel is a healthy scratch for Sunday's game against the Arizona Cardinals. The 27-year-old has been nothing special in his first year with the Bolts, accruing just 106 rushing yards and 53 receiving yards through 10 games. With Michel sidelined, the Chargers will deploy Isaiah Spiller and Joshua Kelley in depth roles behind Austin Ekeler this week.

Sony Michel Remains Just A Handcuff In Week 4

Los Angeles Chargers running back Sony Michel surprisingly led the team in rushing attempts and yards in Week 3 and theoretically could produce against a struggling Houston Texans run defense in Week 4 if given the opportunity. Austin Ekeler has still been pacing the Chargers' backfield in terms of snaps and receiving usage, though, so Michel cannot be considered in starting fantasy lineups. He could be worth an addition to your bench if you have an open spot as he appears to be the primary backup to Ekeler in a prolific offense.

Sony Michel Leads Chargers In Carries In Week 3

Los Angeles Chargers running back Sony Michel handled five rushing attempts for 22 yards and hauled in one of two targets for nine receiving yards in a 38-10 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Michel actually out-carried Austin Ekeler this week, but Ekeler was still the better fantasy option as he finished with eight receptions and 53 total yards. Both Michel and Joshua Kelley have received touches in all three games this season, but it was Michel who operated as the clear number two back on Sunday. Unless he sees more opportunities in the coming weeks, though, Michel will continue to be just a handcuff for fantasy purposes.

Chargers Officially Sign Sony Michel

The Los Angeles Chargers signed free-agent running back Sony Michel to an undisclosed deal on Wednesday, according to sources. Michel was cut loose by the Miami Dolphins on Tuesday, but he'll quickly find a new home in a loaded Chargers offense. Joshua Kelley figures to open the 2022 regular season as Austin Ekeler's primary backup, but Michel could compete for backup duties with Kelley once he gets a grasp on his new team's offense. The addition of Michel is certainly bad news for Kelly and rookie Isaiah Spiller, who now figures to be fourth on the RB depth chart. The 27-year-old Michel is worth a waiver addition in deeper leagues, especially if you have Ekeler rostered. The former first-rounder had 208 carries for 845 yards and four touchdowns in 17 regular season games for the Los Angeles Rams in 2021, adding 21 catches for 128 yards and a touchdown receiving.

Sony Michel Meeting With Chargers

The Los Angeles Chargers are meeting with free-agent running back Sony Michel on Wednesday. The former Dolphin was a surprise cut on Tuesday, despite a productive season as a member of the Super Bowl-champion Rams last year. The Georgia product totaled 208 carries for 845 yards and four touchdowns, adding 21 receptions for 128 yards and a touchdown through the air. The Chargers have been desperately trying to find a capable backup for Austin Ekeler since the departure of Melvin Gordon. Joshua Kelley won the job over Larry Rountree III and rookie Isaiah Spiller (ankle), but he may now be competing with Michel. The 27-year-old would further complicate this backfield for fantasy football purposes beyond Ekeler, making a wait-and-see approach the best strategy entering the season.

Dolphins Release Sony Michel

The Miami Dolphins released running back Sony Michel on Monday. Michel didn't impress the coaching staff enough in training camp and the preseason to make the cut in a crowded backfield that also includes Chase Edmonds, Raheem Mostert, Myles Gaskin and Salvon Ahmed. The 27-year-old former first-round pick by the New England Patriots in 2018 filled in nicely for the Rams in 2021 due to injuries to Cam Akers and Darrell Henderson Jr. In 17 regular season games (seven starts), Michel had 208 carries for 845 yards and four touchdowns, adding 21 catches for 128 yards and another score. He doesn't have much pass-catching chops, but Michel could easily latch on with another organization as RB depth before the start of the regular season. For now, he's off the fantasy radar in redraft leagues.
