Travis Benjamin Released By The 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers released wide receiver Travis Benjamin (concussion) on Tuesday. He sustained a concussion in the preseason finale against the Las Vegas Raiders. The 31-year-old opted out of the 2020 season due to COVID-19 and will now look to latch onto another team in 2021. San Francisco will roll with Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk, Mohamed Sanu Sr., Trent Sherfield, Jalen Hurd, and Jauan Jennings as the team's wide receivers. Benjamin should be able to land elsewhere for an NFL team in search of a wide receiver depth.

Travis Benjamin Scores A Touchdown

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Travis Benjamin caught both of his targets for 24 yards, including a 16-yard touchdown reception from rookie quarterback Trey Lance to put the 49ers up 15-10 in the third quarter during Sunday's preseason Week 2 win. Benjamin opted out of the 2020 season due to COVID-19 but looked good running routes on Sunday, displaying sure hands on an aggressive throw from Lance that split three defenders on a slant route near the goal-line. The veteran wideout doesn't possess much fantasy value in 2021 but will likely make the 53-man roster after an impressive performance against the Chargers on Sunday. Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel are the notable 49ers wideouts to target in fantasy drafts, as the team tends to lean on its running-back-by-committee approach to control possession and secure wins.

Travis Benjamin Signing With 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers are signing former Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Travis Benjamin to an undisclosed one-year deal on Tuesday, according to a source. The 49ers already had depth concerns at the position before Emmanuel Sanders left in free agency late last week, so Benjamin will help in that regard behind Deebo Samuel. San Francisco will surely address the position in the draft in what is a deep crop of wide receivers. But they also have Jalen Hurd, Kendrick Bourne, Marquise Goodwin, Dante Pettis and Trent Taylor. The Niners are hoping a couple of those guys, along with Benjamin, can step up in 2020. Benjamin is mostly an inconsistent deep threat for fantasy owners in deeper leagues, and there's no guaranteeing he sees much playing time in his new home. He had eight starts with the Chargers the last three years and played in just five games in 2019 due to injury.

Chargers, Travis Benjamin Parting Ways

The Los Angeles Chargers and wide receiver Travis Benjamin have mutually agreed to part ways after the team met with Benjamin's agent, Ron Butler, at the scouting combine, according to a source. The 30-year-old has been with the Bolts since the 2016 season. His best season with the Chargers came in 2016 when he had 47 catches for 677 yards and four touchdowns, but his production continued to fall off and cratered in 2019 when he played in just five games due to injury. Benjamin has some appeal as a deep threat that will stretch defenses, but he's a shaky boom/bust WR5/6 for fantasy purposes, depending on where he winds up in free agency.

Travis Benjamin Lands On Injured Reserve

The Los Angeles Chargers placed wide receiver Travis Benjamin (quadriceps) on Injured Reserve on Thursday and signed defensive tackle T.Y. McGill in a corresponding move. Benjamin can return later this year, but he should be dropped from all fantasy rosters in deeper leagues. The 29-year-old had just six catches on 16 targets for 30 scoreless yards in five games this year. With Dontrelle Inman also on IR, Geremy Davis figures to be the team's No. 3 wideout behind Keenan Allen and Mike Williams. He won't be fantasy relevant unless there's an injury ahead of him.

Travis Benjamin Misses Practice Wednesday

Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Travis Benjamin (quadriceps) did not practice on Wednesday after getting banged up in the Sunday night loss to the Steelers. Consider him questionable to suit up for Week 7 against the Titans, but Benjamin has time to return to practice later this week. With tight end Hunter Henry back in the fold, Benjamin will see precious few targets behind Keenan Allen and Mike Williams. He's off the fantasy radar as more of a WR5/6.

Mike Williams, Travis Benjamin, Virgil Green Questionable

Los Angeles Chargers wide receivers Mike Williams (back) and Travis Benjamin (hip) and tight end Virgil Green (groin) all practiced in full on Friday but are questionable for Week 5 against the Broncos. We'd expect all three players to be active after sitting out in Week 4. It's good news for quarterback Philip Rivers, who has been getting by mainly by leaning on running back Austin Ekeler and receiver Keenan Allen. Williams will be a WR4 in fantasy and should see valuable red-zone looks from Rivers. With the Bolts getting healthier in the receiving corps, Benjamin and Green are off the fantasy radar.

Travis Benjamin, Virgil Green Limited Wednesday

Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Travis Benjamin (hip) and tight end Virgil Green (groin) were both limited in practice on Wednesday. Benjamin and Green are both on track to play in Week 5 against the Broncos after being inactive in Week 4. Benjamin will only be a WR4/flex or DFS sleeper if Mike Williams (back) misses another game. Otherwise, he'll be third on the depth chart behind Keenan Allen and Williams. Even in a No. 2 role, Benjamin has boom or bust written all over him. There are plenty of better options. Green has two catches on three targets for 13 yards in three games. He's not on the fantasy radar and is a block-first tight end.

Travis Benjamin Doubtful To Face Dolphins

Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Travis Benjamin (hip) is listed as doubtful to play in Week 4 against the Dolphins. It's disappointing for anyone who picked up Benjamin hoping that he'd be the No. 2 receiver with Mike Williams (back) hurting in an excellent matchup. But both Williams and Benjamin will be out, leaving Dontrelle Inman and Geremy Davis in three-receiver sets alongside Keenan Allen. The Bolts will likely lean heavily on Allen and running back Austin Ekeler in a game they could still win easily, but Inman becomes intriguing as a deep league and DFS sleeper now.

Mike Williams, Travis Benjamin Miss Practice Again

Los Angeles Chargers wide receivers Mike Williams (back), Travis Benjamin (hip), tight end Virgil Green (groin), kicker Michael Badgley (groin) and cornerback Casey Hayward (back) all missed practice for the second straight day on Thursday. Everyone on this list is looking questionable, at best, to face off against the Dolphins in Week 4. It would be a shame for Williams to miss this excellent matchup, but he's looking like a shaky WR4/flex at this point. The only way Benjamin would be in play as a flex in deeper leagues is if he's active and Williams sits out. If both sit out, Dontrelle Inman could have some deep sleeper appeal in DFS. Badgley has yet to kick this year and is off the fantasy radar until he proves his health. Dolphins wideout Devante Parker would benefit if Hayward can't play, but he's still tough to recommend for starting lineups in standard-sized leagues.
