Los Angeles Chargers tight end Virgil Green (ankle) sustained a considerable ankle injury during Sunday's win over the Jaguars, with head coach Anthony Lynn noting that Green will miss some time with the ailment. Used sparingly this season as an extra tight end, Green made his first touchdown catch of the season Sunday, giving him seven straight years with a TD secured. The team has not yet made a decision on whether or not to place him on injured reserve, but it appears that for at least next week's game against the Broncos, Hunter Henry should have considerable reign on the passes thrown to tight ends. Due to his role in the offense and recent injury, Green can remain on the waiver wire in all season-long formats.
Los Angeles Chargers tight end Virgil Green got in on the action in the team's steamroll of the Jacksonville defense on Sunday. Green got the honor of putting the final nail in the coffin when he caught a wide-open touchdown pass from Tyrod Taylor early in the fourth quarter. It was Green's first regular season touchdown catch since the first week of October in 2018, though Green did haul one in during the team's playoff game against the Patriots last year. Green is much more well known for his blocking prowess, so this TD was a surprise gift to the ninth-year pro.
Mike Williams, Travis Benjamin, Virgil Green Questionable
Los Angeles Chargers wide receivers Mike Williams (back) and Travis Benjamin (hip) and tight end Virgil Green (groin) all practiced in full on Friday but are questionable for Week 5 against the Broncos. We'd expect all three players to be active after sitting out in Week 4. It's good news for quarterback Philip Rivers, who has been getting by mainly by leaning on running back Austin Ekeler and receiver Keenan Allen. Williams will be a WR4 in fantasy and should see valuable red-zone looks from Rivers. With the Bolts getting healthier in the receiving corps, Benjamin and Green are off the fantasy radar.
Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Travis Benjamin (hip) and tight end Virgil Green (groin) were both limited in practice on Wednesday. Benjamin and Green are both on track to play in Week 5 against the Broncos after being inactive in Week 4. Benjamin will only be a WR4/flex or DFS sleeper if Mike Williams (back) misses another game. Otherwise, he'll be third on the depth chart behind Keenan Allen and Williams. Even in a No. 2 role, Benjamin has boom or bust written all over him. There are plenty of better options. Green has two catches on three targets for 13 yards in three games. He's not on the fantasy radar and is a block-first tight end.
Los Angeles Chargers tight end Virgil Green's (groin) injury isn't considered serious, according to a source, and he should have a good shot to play in Week 4 against the Dolphins. Green has two catches on three targets for 13 yards in two games this year. The 31-year-old is more of a blocker than a pass-catcher, and he won't see many looks with Hunter Henry (knee) out. The matchup against the Dolphins this Sunday is great, but Green needs to remain on the waiver wire in all leagues.
Travis Benjamin, Virgil Green Dealing With Injuries
Los Angeles Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn said that wide receiver Travis Benjamin (quadriceps) is dealing with an injury that will put his availability for Week 4 against the Dolphins in question. Tight end Virgil Green (groin) is day-to-day after injuring himself in the Week 3 loss to the Texans. Benjamin caught two of five targets for just five yards on Sunday, while Green failed to catch his only target. Neither player is worth a roster spot in fantasy leagues, even heading into an excellent matchup this weekend against the flailing Dolphins. Receivers Keenan Allen and Mike Williams will continue to soak up most of the targets in the passing game, as well as running back Austin Ekeler.
Los Angeles Chargers tight end Virgil Green finished 2018 on a high note by snagging a touchdown in LA's playoff game with the Patriots, but receiving isn't really his forte. Instead, Green is an extra lineman in the run game who happens to be quick enough to catch some passes. His blocking has kept him in the league this long, and other members of the team are already singing his praises for it again this season. Tight end Hunter Henry took to the mic this week and was gushing about how much of a beast Green is in the run game. Green isn't going to set any receiving records, but his blocking will likely get him plenty of snaps again this year.
Los Angeles Chargers tight end Virgil Green caught everyone off guard when he rumbled his way in for a touchdown against the Raiders. The traditional blocking tight end, Green's TD was just the fifth of his eight-year career. Green's TD came by way of a screen pass that worked to perfection partially because nobody on the defense suspected that he would be the target. The Chargers built a perfect blocking front for him, and Green plowed into the end zone from 13 yards out while barely being touched. Unfortunately, Green was later injured in the game and it is unclear how severe the injury is just yet. Either way, fantasy owners can safely assume this was a one-off instead of the breakout of a new target.
Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers and tight end Virgil Green have been gaining chemistry in training camp practices lately. "(Our connection) is growing, the quarterback said. We're working through how I like things, what I'm expecting on certain routes. He's getting a feel for this offense. He was in it similarly with (Mike) McCoy (in Denver). Virgil is going to be just fine. He has played a lot of football and is a good football player. Those kind of things, you'll see more of that and more plays like that. Green has always been known as a great blocking tight end, but he's doing his best to prove he can be a weapon in the passing game, too. He never had much of a chance in Denver, catching 71 passes in 100 career games there with 807 yards and four touchdowns. He's the top tight end on the Bolts depth chart right now with Hunter Henry (knee) out for the year, so Green's opportunities should go up with his new team. If the Chargers don't re-sign Antonio Gates, Green could be a TE2 sleeper with touchdown upside.
The Los Angeles Chargers are signing free-agent tight end Virgil Green on Wednesday, according to a source. Always somewhat of a sleeper tight end for Denver, he never lived up to they hype and had only 14 receptions for 191 yards and one touchdown in 2017. He recorded one touchdown each of the last four seasons for Denver, and his main specialty is run blocking. Expect Green to serve as Hunter Henry's backup in his new digs, depending on what happens with free-agent tight end Antonio Gates.
