Calen Addison News
The Minnesota Wild have traded defenseman Calen Addison to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for forward Adam Raska and a 2026 fifth-round draft pick. The 23-year-old blueliner was drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the second round of the 2018 NHL Entry Draft but was traded to Minnesota in 2020 as part of a package for winger Jason Zucker. Addison enjoyed a solid rookie campaign last season, notching 29 points in 62 games. However, 18 of those points came on the power play while he posted a poor minus-17 rating and blocked only 38 shots in just 16:07 of average ice time. He has five assists in 12 games this season, three of which have come on the man advantage while he is a minus-three in his 16:48 of ice time per game. For his part, Ruska is without a point in seven AHL games this season and has zero points and seven penalty minutes across eight career NHL contests.
The San Jose Sharks acquired defenseman Calen Addison from the Minnesota Wild on Wednesday. The return is a 2026 fifth-round pick and depth prospect Adam Raska, which seems light given Addison's prospect pedigree and the fact he was on Minnesota's top powerplay. He did struggle at five-on-five and wasn't playing many minutes, so the trade could be good for the 23-year-old since he should get more opportunity in San Jose. Expect him to take over the first powerplay quarterback role immediately. He is a deeper league option in points-only fantasy leagues.
Minnesota Wild defenseman Calen Addison has finally inked a contract for the 2023-24 campaign, re-upping with the team for one year. The deal is worth $825,000. Addison was a restricted free agent after setting the franchise rookie record with 26 assists last season and notching 29 points in total across 62 appearances. The 23-year-old boasts bags of offensive ability, but his defensive shortcomings have resulted in him being dropped from the lineup at times. Addison should be aiming to prove this season that he can be effective at both ends of the ice to earn himself a bigger contract next offseason.
Minnesota Wild defenseman Calen Addison will be back from the press box Thursday against Columbus and return to the lineup after a four-game stint as a healthy scratch. The 22-year-old has been a liability defensively for the team and head coach Dave Evason has elected to keep him out of action for a bit, but Jon Merrill (illness) and Jonas Brodin (lower body) won't be available Thursday and there are bodies needed at the back. Addison has enjoyed a fine campaign offensively with 27 points in 52 games, although it also must be noted that 18 of his points have come on the power play. Dakota Mermis will also come into the Wild lineup Thursday.
