Leon Draisaitl Signs Eight-Year Extension With Oilers

Edmonton Oilers forward Leon Draisaitl has agreed to an eight-year contract extension with the franchise. The German superstar landed a deal worth $112 million and will carry a historically high cap hit of $14 million starting from 2025-26. $104 million of the deal will be paid out in bonuses. Draisaitl was signed to a huge deal after he went for 100-plus points for the fifth time in six seasons. He has amassed 850 points (347 goals, 503 assists) in 719 games across his 10-year career -- only his teammate Connor McDavid (982) and Tampa Bay's Nikita Kucherov (855) have been more prolific in that span. There should be plenty more to come from Draisaitl, who won't even be 30 until next year.

Ty Emberson Joins Oilers

The Edmonton Oilers have added defenseman Ty Emberson to their blue line ahead of the 2024-25 campaign. The 24-year-old comes in from San Jose in a trade, which saw the Oilers give up veteran defenseman Cody Ceci and a third-round draft selection. Emberson had his rookie campaign last term, suiting up for 30 games with the Sharks. He scored one goal and dished out nine assists. The American rearguard averaged one shot on goal with 1.5 blocks and 3.1 hits. Emberson will be battling for a spot on the third defensive pairing in training camp.

Oilers Add Vasily Podkolzin In Trade With Canucks

The Edmonton Oilers have acquired winger Vasily Podkolzin from the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for a 2025 fourth-round draft pick. The Russian forward switched clubs in Canada following 137 appearances with the Canucks. Podkolzin, who was a top-10 pick in 2019, hasn't been very impactful in the NHL, notching 35 points (18 goals, 17 assists). He went goalless in 19 games with two assists last term. The trade allows Podkolzin to reboot his career, but massive improvement will be needed from him for the 23-year-old to become fantasy-relevant.

Evander Kane Set To Miss Start Of Season

Edmonton Oilers left wing Evander Kane appears set to miss the beginning of the new NHL campaign. According to Oilers radio broadcaster Bob Stauffer, there is a "very good chance" Kane won't be ready for the start of the season. Stauffer mentions the possibility of surgery for Kane. This is unfortunate news, as Kane also missed the end of last season. He was unavailable for the final five games of the 2024 Stanley Cup Final against Florida after telling the media that he had played most of the campaign with a sports hernia. The 33-year-old power forward was limited to 24 goals and 44 points in 77 outings.

Leon Draisaitl, Oilers Begin Contract Talks

Edmonton Oilers forward Leon Draisaitl has begun talks on a new contract with the team. He is entering the final season of an eight-year, $68-million deal. Oilers general manager Stan Bowman noted earlier in the week that he's had "good conversations" with Draisaitl's agent Mike Liut and there is nothing "negative" to report. Following five 100-point campaigns in six years, the Oilers definitely won't get Draisaitl's signature on the cheap. The German superstar boasts 347 goals and 850 points in 719 career games and has always been extremely productive during the postseason, which further increases his value.

Mattias Janmark Pots Lone Oilers Goal In Game 7 Loss

Edmonton Oilers center Mattias Janmark produced the team's only goal in Monday's heartbreaking 2-1 loss in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final against the Panthers. Janmark had a quick answer to Carter Verhaeghe in the first period after he had given Florida the lead. It was a big finish in the series from Janmark, who registered four points across the final four games. He totaled eight points (four goals, four assists) in 25 games this postseason overall following a 12-point regular-season campaign. Janmark, who also lost the Stanley Cup Final with Dallas against Tampa Bay in 2020, could be moving on from Edmonton this offseason, as he is on an expiring contract.

Connor McDavid Wins Conn Smythe Trophy

Edmonton Oilers center Connor McDavid was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy on Monday as the most valuable player of the 2024 NHL postseason. The Oilers captain led all players in the playoffs with 42 points in 25 games and set a new league record with 34 assists. However, he had a disappointing finish to the postseason campaign, as McDavid couldn't add any points to his tally in Monday's winner-takes-all game against Florida. He's the first player since 2003 to be selected as the playoff MVP despite being on the losing side in the Stanley Cup Final.

Stuart Skinner Aims For Another Win On Monday

Edmonton Oilers goaltender Stuart Skinner will look to keep his impressive form going in Monday's Game 7 of the 2024 Stanley Cup Final against the Panthers. Following an inconsistent start to the postseason, Skinner has enjoyed a very strong three-game stretch in the Final, allowing only five goals on 86 shots for a .942 save percentage. He has yet to win more than three decisions in a row in these playoffs but did enjoy three separate winning streaks of at least four games during the regular season. Skinner carries a 14-8 record for the entire postseason with a 2.47 goals-against average, a .901 save percentage, and one shutout.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins Good To Go For Game 7

Edmonton Oilers forward Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (illness) will be in the lineup for Game 7 of the 2024 Stanley Cup Final against Florida on Monday. The longest-tenured Oiler missed Sunday's practice because he was feeling under the weather, but the illness bug won't keep Nugent-Hopkins from competing in the biggest game in hockey. The special game comes exactly 13 years after Edmonton selected Nugent-Hopkins first overall in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. The 31-year-old is a massive piece for the Oilers in all situations and has performed well in the postseason, notching seven goals and 22 points in 24 games. However, Nugent-Hopkins has been limited to only two assists on the offensive end in the matchup against the Panthers.

Viktor Arvidsson Heading To Free Agency

Los Angeles Kings winger Viktor Arvidsson appears poised to move on from L.A. this offseason. According to TSN's Travis Yost, the 31-year-old Swedish forward will hit free agency on July 1. Arvidsson, a former 30-goal scorer with the Nashville Predators, has spent three injury-filled seasons with the Kings. He made only 18 appearances in 2023-24, scoring six goals and handing out nine assists. Arvidsson is finishing off a seven-year, $29.75 million contract. Through 546 career games, Arvidsson has managed 362 points (179 goals, 183 assists), and he can definitely still do a good job for a number of teams. However, health remains a big question mark with him and might scare off some suitors.

Evander Kane A Game-Time Decision On Friday

Edmonton Oilers left wing Evander Kane (abdomen) could be back in action on Friday against the Panthers. He is officially regarded as a game-time decision for the contest by Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch. Kane has missed the last three games after struggling to perform while playing through a sports hernia. He had zero shots on goal and went minus-four across the first two games of the 2024 Stanley Cup Final. The gritty winger carries a minus-seven rating for the entire postseason, sitting on eight points (four goals, four assists) with 20 games played.

Evander Kane Likely To Remain Out For Game 5

Edmonton Oilers left wing Evander Kane (abdomen) isn't expected to feature in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final against Florida on Tuesday. After missing two games due to a sports hernia, Kane was able to skate on Tuesday morning, but according to The Athletic's Daniel Nugent-Bowman, it's "likely" the Oilers will roll with the same lineup they had in Game 4. It's probably a wise decision, considering Kane has been ineffective in these playoffs, and Edmonton blew out the Panthers without him in the last game.

Leon Draisaitl On First Three-Game Scoring Drought Since March 2020

Edmonton Oilers forward Leon Draisaitl put in another scoreless effort in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final against Florida on Thursday, finishing without a point for a third consecutive game. It's his first three-game pointless streak since March 2020. Draisaitl has struggled in the Final despite getting 23-plus minutes of ice time in every contest. He has failed to score with nine shots on goal. With the team facing elimination in Saturday's Game 4, Edmonton will be desperate for some offensive production from Draisaitl, who has had no scoring issues in the previous rounds and sits on 28 points (10 goals, 18 assists) through 21 appearances this postseason.

Connor McDavid Finishes Game 3 Loss With Two Assists

Edmonton Oilers center Connor McDavid recorded two assists as the team suffered a 4-3 defeat in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final against Florida on Thursday. Edmonton struggled to get past Sergei Bobrovsky again, but the team managed to make it a close game with a couple of third-period strikes, and McDavid collected helpers on both plays. This pushes him to 29 assists for the playoffs -- Wayne Gretzky is the only player in NHL history to manage more in a single postseason, with his league record standing at 31 assists. In 21 outings, McDavid has also recorded five goals. The Oilers captain has been phenomenal throughout the postseason, but the team appears to have run out of gas, as Edmonton fell into a 3-0 hole in the series Thursday night.

Corey Perry Set To Re-Enter Oilers Lineup On Thursday

Edmonton Oilers right wing Corey Perry is on track to return to the lineup for Thursday's Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final against Florida. The veteran forward, who has made history by becoming the first player ever to feature in the Stanley Cup Final with five different teams, was a healthy scratch in Monday's Game 2 loss. Perry recorded one shot on goal, two penalty minutes, and a minus-one rating across 8:45 in Game 1 of the Final. He could play a larger role in Thursday's contest, depending on Evander Kane's (sports hernia) status.

Evander Kane Uncertain For Thursday's Game 3

Edmonton Oilers left wing Evander Kane (sports hernia) is in danger of missing Thursday's Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final against Florida. "We haven't decided yet," said Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch on Wednesday when asked if Kane will play in Game 3, per Dan Rosen of NHL.com. Kane has been battling a sports hernia for most of the season, and his performances have been largely ineffective in the playoffs. The 32-year-old finished Monday's 4-1 loss in Game 2 with a minus-three rating and had a third consecutive outing without a single shot on goal. He's registered only one point in the past nine games and is sitting on four goals and four assists through 20 postseason appearances.

Darnell Nurse Expected To Play In Game 3

Edmonton Oilers defenseman Darnell Nurse (hip) is expected to be in the lineup when the 2024 Stanley Cup Final continues on Thursday. The 29-year-old was limited in Monday's Game 2 against Florida due to a hip injury, logging only seven shifts and 4:20 of ice time. Nurse wasn't able to practice on Wednesday either. However, Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch expects to have him available on Thursday night. Nurse has had a frustrating postseason, contributing only three assists in 20 games on the offensive end. He is also carrying a team-worst minus-15 rating.

Leon Draisaitl Expects Better Performance From Oilers In Game 2

Edmonton Oilers forward Leon Draisaitl is confident that his squad can do much better than the team's Game 1 performance in the Stanley Cup Final against Florida. "We're a really good hockey team that, believe it or not, can play better than (Saturday) night," Draisaitl said ahead of Monday's Game 2. "We have more. We know that. We can play better. They're going to be better, and I expect us to be better as well." Draisaitl failed to get on the score sheet for only the third time this postseason in Saturday's 3-0 defeat. He came up empty-handed with four shots on goal and logged a minus-one rating in 23:14 of action. The German superstar has gone without a point in back-to-back outings just twice in 2024.

Vincent Desharnais Re-Enters Oilers Lineup Monday

Edmonton Oilers defenseman Vincent Desharnais will be drafted into the lineup for Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final against Florida on Monday. The 28-year-old steps in for Cody Ceci, who had a bad time as Edmonton opened the Final with a 3-0 defeat. Ceci finished Saturday's game with a minus-two rating across 17:19 of ice time. Desharnais, who last played in Game 3 of the Western Conference Final against Dallas, will roll with Darnell Nurse on the second defensive pairing. He has recorded one assist, four shots, 38 blocks, and 39 hits in 15 postseason contests this year.

Evander Kane Continues Slump In Game 1 Against Florida

Edmonton Oilers left wing Evander Kane had another scoreless effort in Game 1 of the 2024 Stanley Cup Final against Florida on Saturday. He finished a 3-0 defeat with a minus-one rating, amassing three hits with zero shots on goal in 15:22 of action. It was the eighth consecutive game with a goal for Kane, and he boasts only one point over the stretch. The 32-year-old has recorded eight points (four goals, four assists) in 19 playoff games overall this year. Kane has been playing with a sports hernia for most of the season, which is likely the cause of his underwhelming numbers.
