Johnathan Kovacevic Won't Be Ready For Training Camp Following Surgery

New Jersey Devils defenseman Johnathan Kovacevic (knee) underwent surgery on Thursday and will not be ready for the start of training camp. The 27-year-old missed the team's final two playoff games due to a knee injury and faces a lengthy recovery process. This is definitely a setback for the former third-round pick, especially after Kovacevic had a career year in 2024-25. He finished the campaign with 17 points (one goal, 16 assists), 76 shots, 99 blocks, and 102 hits, finishing plus-10 across 81 appearances. Missing any part of training camp isn't ideal, but at least Kovacevic has not been ruled out for opening night.

Johnathan Kovacevic To Have Knee Surgery

New Jersey Devils defenseman Johnathan Kovacevic is dealing with a knee injury that will likely require surgery. He missed the last two games of the team's 4-1 first-round loss to the Carolina Hurricanes. "I'll be out for a decent amount of time," Kovacevic said during his exit interview on Thursday. "I don't anticipate I'll be ready for the start of next year either." Kovacevic had his first season with the Devils after being traded by the Montreal Canadiens. He finished the year with several career highs, recording 17 points (one goal, 16 assists), 99 blocks, and 102 hits in 81 games. The 27-year-old, who was a pending unrestricted free agent, inked a five-year, $20 million extension with the Devils in March.

Johnathan Kovacevic To Remain Out Tuesday

New Jersey Devils defenseman Johnathan Kovacevic (undisclosed) will not play on Tuesday against the Carolina Hurricanes. The 27-year-old will be absent for a second consecutive contest after suffering an undisclosed injury in Game 3 of the matchup. Kovacevic has registered two shots, eight hits, and two penalty minutes with a minus-one rating in his first three career postseason games. Dennis Cholowski re-entered the lineup in Kovacevic's absence on Sunday and is likely to keep his spot for Game 5, as the Devils are short on defensive options. Cholowski has had a very limited role in the postseason, averaging only 8:59 of ice time across two games.

Johnathan Kovacevic Exits Early Friday

New Jersey Devils defenseman Johnathan Kovacevic (undisclosed) did not finish Friday's Game 3 against the Carolina Hurricanes. He logged only 6:00 of ice time in a 3-2 double-overtime win and did not see any action after the first period. The 27-year-old recorded one shot on goal and two penalty minutes with a plus-one rating. Overall, Kovacevic has a minus-one rating across the series with two shots and eight hits. If Kovacevic cannot play in Sunday's Game 4, the Devils will likely turn to Dennis Cholowski or Seamus Casey.

Johnathan Kovacevic Tallies Two Points On Friday

New Jersey Devils defenseman Johnathan Kovacevic tallied a goal and an assist in his New Jersey debut on Friday afternoon. The former Montreal Canadian earned the primary assist on the opening goal of the game, which was scored by forward Stefan Noesen in the first period. Later in the opening frame, Kovacevic found the back of the net on a snapshot from the point. This was an impressive debut for the 27-year-old, as he tallied only 13 points across 62 games last season. Kovacevic spent the afternoon playing on the second defensive pair alongside Jonas Siegenthaler. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor the former third-round pick's production in New Jersey as he could eventually earn power-play opportunities if he continues to flash scoring upside.
