Will Smith Returns Against Red Wings

San Jose Sharks forward Will Smith (upper body) will return from a 13-game absence on Friday night against the Detroit Red Wings. The talented sophomore has been cleared to return from an upper-body injury. Smith is projected to join Macklin Celebrini and Igor Chernyshov on the first line. He is also expected to fill a spot on the second power-play unit. In 2025-26, Smith has scored nearly a point per game, racking up 12 goals and 17 assists in 33 appearances. Prior to his injury, Smith went back-to-back appearances without recording a point, but he has yet to experience a three-game scoreless streak this season.

Will Smith Upgraded to Day-to-Day

San Jose Sharks forward Will Smith (upper body) has been upgraded to day-to-day, Sheng Peng of San Jose Hockey Now reports. The 20-year-old sophomore has been out since mid-December due to an upper-body injury. However, Smith appears close to returning and will join the team for a four-game road trip that begins Thursday night in Washington. Smith was almost a point-per-game player early in the season, notching 12 goals and 17 assists in 33 outings. When Smith is cleared to play, he will likely reclaim a top-six role and rejoin the first power-play unit.

Will Smith Out Week-to-Week

San Jose Sharks forward Will Smith (upper body) is week-to-week, Sheng Peng of San Jose Hockey Now reports. "We're gonna re-evaluate him in the New Year," Sharks head coach Ryan Warsofsky said. "He's making steps daily to getting better. So that's the big positive." San Jose has four games to go until the calendar flips. Smith has had a highly productive sophomore campaign, posting 29 points (12 goals, 17 assists) in 33 appearances. He has already missed the last three games. The Sharks are also missing Philipp Kurashev (upper body) and could be without Collin Graf (face) after he was struck by a puck at Monday's practice. The injury issues have allowed Graf and Igor Chernyshov to move up to the first line. Should Graf also be unavailable, Jeff Skinner may have a rare chance to play in the top six on Tuesday night against the Vegas Golden Knights.

Sharks Place Will Smith on Injured Reserve

San Jose Sharks forward Will Smith (undisclosed) was placed on Injured Reserve on Monday, along with fellow forward Philipp Kurashev (upper body). Both players were hurt during Saturday's win over the Pittsburgh Penguins. Losing Smith is a bigger blow for the Sharks, as the 20-year-old has been the team's second-highest scorer in 2025-26. Across 33 outings, Smith has produced 12 goals and 29 points. Smith and Kurashev skated alongside teenage phenom Macklin Celebrini on the top line against Pittsburgh. With both sidelined, players such as William Eklund and Jeff Skinner may now have an opportunity to step into the top six.

Will Smith Hurt in Saturday's Victory

San Jose Sharks forward Will Smith (undisclosed) made an early exit against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday. San Jose also lost Philipp Kurashev (upper body) during the contest but still produced a spectacular comeback, winning 6-5 in overtime after trailing 5-1. Smith has struggled to make an impact in recent games, but he has had a great sophomore campaign overall. In 33 outings, Smith has contributed 12 goals and 17 assists. San Jose is carrying Zack Ostapchuk as an extra forward, but the team may need to call up a player from the minors if both Smith and Kurashev are unavailable on Tuesday night against the Calgary Flames.
