Erik Johnson, Zemgus Girgensons Expected To Return For Sabres Tuesday
Buffalo Sabres defenseman Erik Johnson (upper body) and forward Zemgus Girgensons (undisclosed) are both expected to return to the lineup to take on the visiting Dallas Stars on Tuesday. Johnson has missed the past four games following an upper-body injury sustained against the Chicago Blackhawks on Jan. 18. The former No. 1 overall pick was cleared by team doctors on Monday after returning to practice on Jan. 26. He has three goals in 41 games this season. Girgensons returned to practice on Sunday after missing one game after suffering an injury in the team's second-to-last pre-All-Star break contest against the Los Angeles Kings on Jan. 24. He has four goals in 31 games on the season and skated on the team's fourth line on Sunday.
Zemgus Girgensons Signs New One-Year Deal With Sabres
Buffalo Sabres forward Zemgus Girgensons has secured a new one-year deal with the club. The Sabres brought the Latvian forward back for his 10th season with the team for $2.5 million. Girgensons was Buffalo's first-round pick in 2012, and he's the team's current longest-serving player. The 29-year-old played a career-high 80 games in 2022-23, scoring 10 goals and notching 18 points with 114 shots on goal and 96 hits. Girgensons has tallied 174 points in total in 625 career games.
Zemgus Girgensons Expected To Play Thursday Vs. Oilers
Buffalo Sabres forward Zemgus Girgensons (lower body) is expected back in the lineup on Thursday as his team visits the Edmonton Oilers. The 28-year-old winger missed the entire 2020-21 season after having hamstring surgery and now hasn't played since January 25 because of a lingering lower-body injury. When he's healthy enough to play, Girgensons has just 12 points (seven goals, five assists) through 34 games played and has gone long stretched without tallying a point.
Zemgus Girgensons Nets Power-Play Goal On Saturday
Buffalo Sabres center Zemgus Girgensons scored a power-play goal on Saturday in Buffalo's 6-2 defeat against the Carolina Hurricanes. Girgensons scored with less than 26 seconds left in the second period to cut Buffalo's deficit to three at the time. He had three shots on goal and delivered four hits on the night. Girgensons snapped a five game point drought. The forward has played almost an exclusively defensive role (offensive zone deployment at 34.1%) but still has a respectable ten points in 23 contests.
