Bryan Hoeing Mixes In Breaking Balls In Tuesday's Bullpen

San Diego Padres right-handed reliever Bryan Hoeing (shoulder) threw another bullpen session on Tuesday and mixed in breaking pitches for the first time. Hoeing was placed on the 15-day injured list at the end of March after being delayed at the start of spring training with a right-shoulder injury. The 28-year-old is recovering from a strained right shoulder but appears to be getting close to going on a minor-league rehab assignment. If Hoeing can avoid a setback once he begins facing live hitters, he could return to San Diego's big-league bullpen before the end of April. After beginning last year with the Miami Marlins, Hoeing had a career-low 1.52 ERA and 0.80 WHIP with 18 strikeouts and five walks in 23 2/3 relief innings for the Friars in the second half of the season. Hoeing will return to a key setup role for SD when he's activated from the IL.

Bryan Hoeing Not Expected To Be Ready For Opening Day

San Diego Padres right-handed pitcher Bryan Hoeing (shoulder) is not expected to earn a spot on the Opening Day roster. Hoeing has battled shoulder soreness throughout most of camp. He recently began playing catch but has not been able to increase his workload. Last season, the 28-year-old was effective in the majors and posted a 2.18 ERA with a 1.06 WHIP. He logged 53 2/3 innings and held a strong 6.7 percent walk rate but struggled to generate strikeouts as he tallied just 43. However, his strong 48.4 percent ground-ball held offset his low strikeout production. He spent most of his season operating as a long-relief option. When he is cleared to return, fantasy managers should expect Hoeing to have a similar role in 2025, which would only make him valuable in deeper NL-only formats.

Bryan Hoeing Plays Catch

San Diego Padres right-handed pitcher Bryan Hoeing (shoulder) began playing catch earlier this week. Hoeing has been delayed during the start of camp due to shoulder soreness. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor his status as he could still be cleared by Opening Day if he continues to progress at a steady rate. Last season, the 28-year-old was deployed primarily as a reliever but did make two starts across his 34 games. He split time with the Marlins and Padres and logged 53 2/3 innings with a 2.18 ERA and a stellar 1.06 WHIP. However, with San Diego, the Louisville product was quite effective as he tossed 23 2/3 innings of relief with a 1.52 ERA and a 0.80 WHIP. He held a 5:18 BB:K ratio. When healthy, fantasy managers should expect Hoeing to have a middle-relief role in the San Diego bullpen.

Bryan Hoeing Still Not Throwing

San Diego Padres right-handed pitcher Bryan Hoeing (shoulder) is still not throwing. Hoeing is battling shoulder soreness and has yet to throw once during camp. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor his status during camp, but given that he has yet to throw, he may face an uphill battle to be cleared for Opening Day. Earlier in the offseason, it was reported that the team views Hoeing as a bullpen piece to begin the season. Last season, the 28-year-old posted a strong 2.18 ERA and a 1.06 WHIP across 53 2/3 innings. He tallied 43 punchouts and showed strong command with a 6.7 percent walk rate. However, he did generate a hefty 5.07 xERA and a .287 xBA, which suggests he could face some regression when he does return to the bump. Hoeing will not carry much fantasy value in a long relief role.

Bryan Hoeing Will Be Deployed Out Of The Bullpen

According to Dennis Lin of The Athletic, San Diego Padres right-handed pitcher Bryan Hoeing will begin the season pitching out of the bullpen. Last season, Hoeing spent time with the Marlins and the Padres. He was given two starts with Miami but was deployed exclusively out of the bullpen in San Diego. Across 53 2/3 innings of work, the 28-year-old held a solid 2.18 ERA and a 1.06 WHIP. Through 23 2/3 innings of relief in San Diego, Hoeing was very effective as he posted a 1.52 ERA with a 0.80 WHIP. During this stint, he struck out 18 batters and only served up five free passes. He was typically deployed in the sixth and seventh innings and was able to tally two holds. However, he did generate a high 5.07 xERA, suggesting he may face some regression during the 2025 season. Fantasy managers should expect Hoeing to continue to operate as a middle relief option and is not expected to see any save opportunities.

Bryan Hoeing To Make Another Rehab Appearance On Tuesday

Miami Marlins right-hander Bryan Hoeing (hamstring) threw two scoreless innings in a minor-league rehab outing for Single-A Jupiter on June 14 and needed 36 pitches to record five outs on June 20. His next rehab outing will be for two innings on June 25. Hoeing previously threw 26 pitches in live batting practice in the cages due to poor weather on June 11. He felt mild tightness after starting his rehab assignment on May 21 with two innings with Triple-A Jacksonville. Hoeing said he first tweaked his hamstring during spring training but pitched through it. The 27-year-old was an effective reliever for the Marlins in his third big-league season in 2023, posting a 1.83 ERA and 0.91 WHIP with 16 strikeouts and five walks, albeit in just 19 2/3 innings over 11 appearances out of the bullpen. He also has starting experience, making eight starts the previous two seasons.

Bryan Hoeing Making His Fifth Start On Friday

Miami Marlins right-hander Bryan Hoeing is set to take the ball for his fifth start of the season on Friday against the Atlanta Braves. The 26-year-old has pitched out of the bullpen for most of the season, but injuries forced him back into the rotation in mid-June. Over 18 games and 35 innings, Hoeing has been phenomenal, posting a 2.31 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, and 20.1% strikeout rate. Fantasy managers may want to keep the rookie on the waiver wire right now, as the Braves represent a tough matchup, and he's pitched five innings of work in just two games this season.

Bryan Hoeing To Make MLB Debut On Saturday

The Miami Marlins have called up right-handed pitcher Bryan Hoeing to make a spot start Saturday against the Los Angeles Dodgers in place of Braxton Garrett. This will be Hoeing's debut, and it's safe to say the Marlins aren't exactly easing him into things. The 25-year-old isn't a highly ranked prospect and had pitched to 4.25 ERA and 1.47 WHIP in the minors this year, while racking up 70 strikeouts in 84 IP. Hoeing has no fantasy appeal, especially for tonight's matchup. But hey, it would be a pretty cool story if he is able to go out there and have a decent outing. It seems unlikely, though.
