Randy Vasquez Goes on Injured List With Ankle Bruise

San Diego Padres right-hander Randy Vasquez (ankle) was placed on the 15-day injured list on Friday with a bruised right ankle, according to Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune. Right-handed reliever Alek Jacob was recalled from Triple-A El Paso in a corresponding move. Vasquez took a line drive off his right ankle in the first inning of his start on Thursday night against the division-rival Los Angeles Dodgers and was pulled after just three innings. He then fainted on his way to get X-rays and was taken to the hospital as a precaution. Even though X-rays came back negative and he was released from the hospital on Friday, he will miss the next two weeks and won't be a candidate to rejoin San Diego's starting rotation until after the All-Star break in mid-July. The 27-year-old allowed four earned runs in just three innings on Thursday night and has surrendered 24 runs (20 earned) on 37 hits (five homers) while walking nine and striking out 10 in 18 2/3 innings in his last five starts. Fantasy managers in mixed leagues shouldn't be holding Vasquez while he recovers.

X-Rays Come Back Negative on Randy Vasquez

San Diego Padres manager Craig Stammen said on Friday on MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM that right-hander Randy Vasquez's (ankle) X-rays "were negative and all tests came back pretty clean." Vasquez has been given the all-clear after also fainting at Dodger Stadium following his abbreviated three-inning outing in the series opener on Thursday, in which he was hit by a Mookie Betts line drive in the ankle in the first inning. The 27-year-old Dominican hurler has been released from the hospital, but it remains to be seen if he'll make his next scheduled start. Vasquez started the year strong in SD's starting rotation, but like the team, he has faded of late and is now 6-6 with a 4.71 ERA (4.92 FIP) and 1.50 WHIP with 60 strikeouts and 27 walks in 84 innings across his 17 appearances (16 starts) after he gave up four earned runs in three innings versus L.A. on Thursday in three innings. Vasquez will be an extremely risky fantasy streamer if he makes his next scheduled start next week.

Randy Vasquez Injures Ankle, Faints on Thursday

San Diego Padres manager Craig Stammen said that right-hander Randy Vasquez (ankle) was on his way to get an X-ray for his injured ankle after his outing in Thursday's series opener against the division-rival Los Angeles Dodgers when he fainted, according to AJ Cassavell. Vasquez was stable and conscious but was taken to the emergency room as a precaution and is having tests done. The 27-year-old made it through just three innings at Dodger Stadium on Thursday night and allowed four earned runs on seven hits (one homer) while walking one and striking out none in a no-decision. A line drive off the bat of shortstop Mookie Betts did the damage to his ankle in the first inning, and he lasted just two more frames before being pulled. It's unclear what Vasquez's X-ray results showed, but at the very least, he seems likely to miss his final appearance before the All-Star break, and he could very well land on the injured list. After his abbreviated outing on Thursday, Vasquez is now 6-6 on the year with a 4.71 ERA (4.92 FIP) and 1.50 WHIP with 60 strikeouts and 27 walks in 84 innings across his 17 appearances (16 starts) in his third year with the Friars.

Randy Vasquez's Strong Start Generates Waiver-Wire Appeal

San Diego Padres starting pitcher Randy Vasquez has been highly effective in 2026, generating waiver wire interest across most fantasy baseball leagues. Through nine starts this year, Vasquez is 5-1 with a 2.68 ERA, 3.31 FIP, 8.05 K/9, and 2.32 BB/9. He was highly effective with zero runs and zero walks over six innings in his latest outing against the Mariners on Friday, and he'll have a chance to build off that success in his projected start against the Los Angeles Dodgers this Wednesday. Managers in need of a starting pitcher -- whether it's for today only, or rest-of-season -- should strongly consider Vasquez. While his strikeout numbers aren't otherworldly, he has effectively limited walks and runs while pitching deep into games. As it stands, he is available in 45% of leagues and ranks #69 among starters in RotoBaller's latest fantasy baseball rankings.

Randy Vasquez Emerging as a Must-Add Waiver-Wire Target

San Diego Padres starting pitcher Randy Vasquez turned in another strong performance in his team's 4-2 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday, throwing six innings of one-run ball with six strikeouts while picking up the win. The 27-year-old has been excellent so far this season for San Diego, recording a 4-1 record with a 3.05 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, and 42 strikeouts across 44 1/3 innings. Vasquez's strikeout rate currently sits at a career-best 23.2%, and his walk rate is down from 9.1% in 2025 to 7.2%. Vasquez's 80.6% strand rate may not be fully sustainable, but his strong 0.81 HR/9 helps him avoid blow-up innings and keeps his ERA down. Vasquez's average fastball velocity is also up to 94.8 miles per hour, a significant increase from his mark of 93.5 miles per hour in 2025. Particularly in deeper leagues, Vasquez should be scooped up off the waiver wire by fantasy managers.

Randy Vasquez Shoving for Padres, a Must-Watch Waiver-Wire Arm

San Diego Padres right-hander Randy Vasquez has been dominant through five starts this season, posting a 1.88 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, and 30 strikeouts across 28 2/3 innings. Vasquez has allowed more than one run only once, showing impressive consistency in his third year with San Diego. The 27-year-old logged a 3.84 ERA in 28 games last season, but he appears ready to take another step in 2026. His swing-and-miss profile has improved dramatically, with his K% rising to 26.3 after finishing at 13.7 last year. If this growth continues into May, he could become a key fantasy waiver wire target and an important piece of the Padres rotation.

Randy Vasquez Emerging as Must-Start Pitcher?

San Diego Padres right-hander Randy Vasquez continues to be lights-out to start the 2026 MLB season, as he pitched another gem against the Rockies on Thursday night, going 5 2/3 innings while allowing one earned run, seven hits, and striking out eight Rockies in his no-decision effort. On the season, he has now completed three starts (1-0) and pitched to the tune of a 1.02 ERA and 1.08 WHIP, with 19 strikeouts, and only four walks in 17 2/3 innings pitched (three games started). While there are some signs of regression under the hood (3.59 xERA), Vasquez is showing great improvement over his previous seasons and is becoming a must-add in all formats as he continues this hot stretch. Additionally, his next outing is against the Seattle Mariners, who rank last in MLB in batting average (.184), runs per game (3.1), and strikeout rate (27.6 percent), the fourth-worst in the league, making him a strong stream and add for next week.

Randy Vasquez has "Inside Track" on Rotation Spot

San Diego Padres right-hander Randy Vasquez has an "inside track" to one of the final starting rotation spots in San Diego to begin the 2026 season despite the recent additions of German Marquez and Walker Buehler, according to MLB.com's AJ Cassavell. Nick Pivetta, Michael King, and Joe Musgrove are locks. Vasquez, 27, likely earned himself a rotation spot to begin the year with his solid 2025 showing, in which he went 6-7 with a 3.84 ERA (4.85 FIP) and 1.32 WHIP with a career-high 78 strikeouts and 52 walks in 133 2/3 innings over 28 appearances (26 starts). While Vasquez was a solid back-of-the-rotation arm for the Friars, fantasy managers in deeper leagues should expect some regression due to his 5.51 xFIP and 5.44 SIERA. His 4.6% K-BB% was the third-lowest mark in the league among pitchers with at least 130 innings. Vasquez is outside of RotoBaller's top-100 starting pitchers in fantasy.

Randy Vasquez to Start for Padres on Saturday

San Diego Padres right-hander Randy Vasquez will come up from Triple-A El Paso to start against the Colorado Rockies on Saturday, according to Jeff Sanders of the San Diego Union-Tribune. Vasquez has made 23 appearances (22 starts) for the Padres this season and gone 3-6 with a 3.96 ERA, a 1.38 WHIP, and 59:49 K:BB in 111 1/3 innings. He'll pitch at Coors Field for the second time this year on Saturday. The 26-year-old picked up a win in Colorado on May 9, when he limited the Rockies to two earned runs on six hits and logged five strikeouts against one walk over six innings.

Randy Vasquez Recalled, Pitching on Friday

San Diego Padres starting pitcher Randy Vasquez was recalled from Triple-A El Paso on Thursday. He'll take the roster spot of Michael King (knee) who was placed on the 15-day injured list. Vasquez hasn't pitched in the MLB since he allowed five runs in a short four-inning outing on August 3. He figures to start in King's place on Friday or pitch the bulk of the innings if the Padres decide to go with an opener. Vasquez isn't a recommended streaming choice versus the tough Dodgers lineup.
