Randy Vasquez To Begin Season In Padres Starting Rotation

San Diego Padres right-hander Randy Vasquez will open the 2025 season as the team's No. 4 starter. Vasquez opened spring training this year in a competition with right-hander Stephen Kolek and left-hander Kyle Hart for the fifth rotation spot, but now that Yu Darvish (elbow) will open the year on the injured list, both Vasquez and Hart will begin in the rotation. Kolek was optioned to Triple-A El Paso on Monday. The 26-year-old Dominican had a 3.38 ERA with one walk and seven strikeouts in eight innings over three Cactus League outings (two starts) this spring. Acquired as part of the Juan Soto trade last winter, Vasquez went back and forth between El Paso and the big leagues but ended up making 20 starts and posting a 4.87 ERA and 1.51 WHIP with 62 K's and 29 walks in 98 innings. He should have a clearer path to stick in the rotation in 2025 with Joe Musgrove (elbow) expected to miss the entire year, but his lack of strikeout stuff limits his upside to NL-only leagues.

Randy Vasquez Set To Start On Saturday

San Diego Padres starting pitcher Randy Vasquez was promoted from Triple-A earlier on Saturday afternoon to start on Saturday evening when the Padres face the Arizona Diamondbacks. Vasquez has spent the entire month in Triple-A and has held a rough 7.20 ERA and 1.20 WHIP. Through his previous 40 1/3 innings at the big league level, the 25-year-old has posted a 5.58 ERA, 1.49 WHIP, with a 15:26 BB:K ratio. Fantasy managers and DFS players should avoid Vasquez as a streaming option this evening as he will face a tough Arizona lineup that has hit right-handed pitching quite well this season with an excellent .788 OPS.

Randy Vasquez Recalled And Starting On Monday

The San Diego Padres recalled right-hander Randy Vasquez from Triple-A El Paso on Monday and optioned right-hander Lake Bachar to El Paso after Sunday's game against the New York Mets in a corresponding move. Vasquez will rejoin San Diego's starting rotation for Monday's series opener against the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium. The 25-year-old will be replacing knuckleballer Matt Waldron, who was sent down to the minors late last week after getting hit around in his last several outings. He'll now get another shot after going 3-6 with a 4.63 ERA and 1.51 WHIP with 53 strikeouts and 22 walks in 81 2/3 innings over 17 starts in his first year in SD. If Vasquez can hold his own in his return to the rotation, he could stick around until Yu Darvish (elbow) comes off the injured list. The Dominican makes for a shaky fantasy streamer, with his last MLB start coming back on Aug. 8.

Randy Vasquez Cleared To Start On Friday

San Diego Padres right-hander Randy Vasquez (forearm) has been cleared to make his next start on Friday against the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks. Vasquez left his last start after just 59 pitches on Friday night in Boston against the Red Sox and took a no-decision after being hit in the right forearm by a comebacker. In his four innings of work, he gave up only one earned run on five hits while striking out one and walking one. Thankfully, the 25-year-old avoided any structural damage in his arm and will not even miss a turn through the rotation. Still, he'll be a bit more risky for fantasy managers in deeper leagues against Arizona. Since returning to the Padres from Triple-A El Paso on June 1, Vasquez has gone 2-1 with a 4.20 ERA and 1.60 WHIP with 19 K's and nine walks in six starts covering 30 innings. He had a quality start in his first meeting with the D-backs on June 6, when he allowed three earned runs in 6 2/3 innings for a no-decision.

Randy Vasquez Removed Early On Friday

San Diego Padres starting pitcher Randy Vasquez (forearm) was forced to exit early during Friday's start against the Boston Red Sox. Vasquez was pitching well before getting hit in the forearm by a line drive. It seemed like Vasquez was fine, but the Padres pulled him from the contest as a precaution. The expectation is that Vasquez will undergo X-rays to determine the severity of the issue. He allowed one run on five hits through four innings before exiting on Friday. Fantasy managers should check back for another update on his status.

Randy Vasquez To Start In Minors

The San Diego Padres have optioned right-hander Randy Vasquez to Triple-A El Paso to begin the 2024 regular season. Vasquez was acquired from the New York Yankees over the winter in the blockbuster trade involving outfielder Juan Soto, and he came to San Diego in competition for the final starting rotation spot. However, a poor spring showing (6.23 ERA with five walks and nine strikeouts in 8 2/3 Cactus League innings) sealed his fate. The 25-year-old will begin the year down on the farm, but the Friars will surely need him to make starts at some point at the big-league level this year given SD's questionable rotation depth. Vasquez could become an option for fantasy managers in NL-only leagues this year, but he has a low ceiling in mixed leagues as a streamer.

Jhony Brito, Randy Vasquez To Enter Camp As Starters

San Diego Padres manager Mike Shildt said that pitchers Jhony Brito and Randy Vasquez will come to spring training as starters behind Joe Musgrove, Yu Darvish and Michael King, with Pedro Avila and Matt Waldron competing for the final spot in the starting rotation. Others to watch include Jairo Iriarte, Jay Groome and Glen Otto. Both Brito and Vasquez were acquired in the blockbuster trade this offseason that sent Juan Soto to the New York Yankees. Brito, 25, looked better in relief in the Bronx in his first MLB season in 2023 and finished with a 4.28 ERA and 1.22 WHIP in 90 1/3 innings. Vasquez, 25, had a strong 2.87 ERA and 1.27 WHIP over just 37 2/3 innings in 11 games (five starts) last year but will be on the fantasy radar in deep NL-only leagues now that it looks like he'll open the season in a starting role in his new digs.

Randy Vasquez Allows Two Runs In Relief

New York Yankees rookie right-hander Randy Vasquez came on in relief on Sunday in the 7-1 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks and surrendered two earned runs on three hits while walking two and striking out two in 2 1/3 innings after replacing starter Carlos Rodon. For the final week of the regular season, Vasquez is likely to continue coming out of the bullpen with Luke Weaver settling into the fifth spot in the starting rotation. The 24-year-old Dominican has only appeared in 10 games (five starts) for the Yankees in his first major-league season, but he's been decent, posting a 2.91 ERA (5.35 FIP), 1.23 WHIP, 16 walks and 27 strikeouts in 34 innings. However, he's also been pretty fortunate given his 10.7 percent walk rate.

Randy Vasquez To Start Wednesday Against Braves

New York Yankees rookie right-hander Randy Vasquez is scheduled to start this Wednesday on the road against the Atlanta Braves. Vasquez has only made four appearances in the majors for the Yankees this year, with his most recent outing coming on Aug. 11 in relief against the Miami Marlins. He picked up his second win of the year and allowed two earned runs on three hits while walking one and striking out two in 3 2/3 innings. Given all the injuries to Yankees starting pitchers, there's a real chance the 24-year-old will stick in New York's starting rotation the rest of the season. In his 19 innings pitched in 2023, the Dominican hurler has a nice 1.89 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 12 strikeouts in four outings (three starts).

Randy Vasquez Likely to Start Wednesday

New York Yankees rookie right-hander Randy Vasquez is in the team's clubhouse on Tuesday and has a good chance to start on Wednesday against the Chicago White Sox in place of injured left-hander Nestor Cortes (shoulder), who is expected to land on the injured list. In his major-league debut against the San Diego Padres on May 26, Vasquez was hit with a loss when he allowed two runs on four hits (one homer) while walking three and striking out six in 4 2/3 innings of work. The club's No. 12 prospect, per MLB Pipeline, has gone 1-6 with a 5.13 ERA, 1.63 WHIP, 26 walks and 55 strikeouts in 10 starts for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in 2023. The matchup will be a better one for Vasquez in his second MLB start, and his strikeout upside could make him worth streaming consideration in deeper leagues.
