Griffin Canning Done for the Year With Ruptured Achilles

New York Mets right-hander Griffin Canning (Achilles) will miss the rest of the 2025 season after being placed on the 60-day injured list on Friday with a ruptured left Achilles that he suffered in Thursday's game against the Atlanta Braves. The Mets added right-handed pitching prospect Blade Tidwell from Triple-A Syracuse in a corresponding move. It's a tough break for Canning, who might not be ready for the start of next year either, depending on how his rehab goes this offseason. The 29-year-old was having his best year in the big leagues in his first season with the Mets, going 7-3 with a 3.77 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 70:35 K:BB in his 16 starts. Obviously, fantasy managers in single-year leagues can now drop him. With Kodai Senga (hamstring) and Sean Manaea (elbow, oblique) on the IL, Tidwell could temporarily fill the fifth spot in New York's starting rotation.

Griffin Canning Feared to Have Achilles Injury

New York Mets right-hander Griffin Canning (ankle/Achilles) exited his start against the Atlanta Braves on Thursday with what was initially described as a left ankle injury. However, after the Mets' 4-0 win, manager Carlos Mendoza met with the media and revealed: "We think it's an Achilles. He's getting an MRI, we're waiting for the results, but it looks like it's an Achilles injury." Canning, who threw 2 2/3 scoreless innings in the victory, needed help getting off the field after stepping awkwardly while reacting to a ground ball hit to short. It now appears he'll miss a significant amount of time, perhaps the rest of the season if an MRI confirms the Mets' fears. Canning has been a dependable part of a New York rotation that has dealt with a slew of injuries this season. The 29-year-old has gone 7-3 and logged a 3.77 ERA with 70 strikeouts, 35 walks, and a 1.38 WHIP in 76 1/3 innings.

Griffin Canning Exits with Ankle Injury

New York Mets starting pitcher Griffin Canning (ankle) left Thursday's start against the Braves in the third inning after throwing only 36 pitches. He stepped awkwardly after a ball was hit into play and collapsed to the ground in what looked to be considerable pain. The Mets confirmed that the 29-year-old is dealing with a left ankle injury, and he will undergo imaging to determine the severity. The right-hander cruised through 2 innings before going down, allowing one hit and striking out three. Expect further updates tomorrow on the extent of his ankle injury and if he will require a trip to the injured list.

Griffin Canning Strikes Out Seven in Win on Wednesday

New York Mets right-hander Griffin Canning turned in an excellent start in his team's 6-1 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday. Canning tossed six scoreless innings while allowing three hits, striking out seven, and walking one to improve his record to 6-2. It has been an impressive season for Canning, who shut down one of baseball's best teams in the Dodgers on Wednesday. He now has a 2.90 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, and 57 strikeouts over 59 innings of work in his first year with the Mets. Canning has developed into a reliable fantasy starter, as well, who can be trusted in starting lineups for his next start, which will be against the Washington Nationals on Tuesday.

Griffin Canning With A Quality Start On Sunday

New York Mets right-hander Griffin Canning (5-1) was solid on Sunday against the Chicago Cubs. Although he walked away from this contest with a no-decision, he went six innings, allowed two hits, one run, and struck out five. His only blemish came on a Pete Crow-Armstrong solo home run in the sixth inning that erased the Mets' 1-0 lead. Nonetheless, Canning continues his stellar season with the Mets, as he now owns an impressive 2.36 ERA in 2025 with 42 innings pitched, and a solid 9.00 K/9 with his new team. Next up for Canning is a tough matchup on the road in the Bronx to take on the New York Yankees. Fantasy Managers may want to plan for some regression with Canning down the stretch, but ride the hot streak that he's on thus far.

Griffin Canning Earns Another Win

New York Mets starting pitcher Griffin Canning worked five solid innings in Arizona to earn a win in his fifth straight start. He improved to 5-1 on the season with a 2.50 ERA, 3.34 FIP, and 1.39 WHIP along with 37 strikeouts in 36 innings. Canning gave up a solo home run to Corbin Carroll to lead off the game, but he didn't give up any more runs while finishing five innings with his hits allowed and six strikeouts. He handed over the lead to the bullpen, who barely held on to secure the 5-4 road win to start their series in Arizona. Canning will look to continue his strong start to the season and get a sixth straight win in his second start of the week, which is scheduled for Sunday in a tough matchup at home against the Cubs.

Griffin Canning Tosses Five Scoreless Innings

New York Mets starting pitcher Griffin Canning continued his strong start to the season during Monday's game against the Washington Nationals. The right-hander earned his fourth win of the season as he tossed five scoreless innings in this one. He gave up four hits, walked three batters, and struck out five batters while throwing 90 pitches on Monday. It wasn't a great performance, but Canning has been a viable fantasy option lately. He has allowed one earned run or less in four of his last five starts. He'll take a 2.61 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, and 31/14 K/BB ratio into his next start against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Griffin Canning Strikes Out Eight On Thursday

New York Mets right-hander Griffin Canning tossed a gem in a 4-1 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday. Canning threw six innings of one-run ball while striking out eight, walking two, and scattering three hits to earn the win. The veteran right-hander generated 16 swinging strikes in the start to improve his record to 2-1, to go along with a 3.43 ERA, 1.33 WHIP, and 21 strikeouts over 21 innings of work. After posting a 5.19 ERA with the Los Angeles Angels last season, Canning is enjoying his move to the National League thus far. He will have a tougher test against the Philadelphia Phillies in his next start, which is set for Tuesday.

Griffin Canning Will Make His Next Start On Thursday

New York Mets right-hander Griffin Canning (illness) has recovered enough to make the start in the series opener against the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday, according to MLB.com's Anthony DiComo. Lefty David Peterson, right-hander Kodai Senga and righty Clay Holmes will follow him in the four-game series. Canning began feeling sick on Tuesday and was scratched from his originally scheduled start in Minnesota in the series finale against the Twins. The 28-year-old staying on turn in the rotation means that the Mets won't be tempted to call up top pitching prospect Brandon Sproat to make his MLB debut this week. Due to injuries to several of New York's starting pitchers, Canning made the Mets' Opening Day rotation and has gone 1-1 with a 4.20 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and 13:8 K:BB in 15 innings over three starts against the Astros, Blue Jays and Athletics. He'll be a middling deep-league streamer against St. Louis.

Griffin Canning Scratched From Wednesday's Outing Due To Illness

New York Mets right-hander Griffin Canning (illness) has been scratched from his scheduled start on Wednesday against the Minnesota Twins due to an illness, according to MLB.com's Anthony DiComo. The Mets have yet to announce a replacement, but it's unlikely to be pitching prospect Brandon Sproat on short rest. If Canning is feeling better in a few days, he could be asked to make his next start this Friday against the St. Louis Cardinals. After making some mechanical tweaks in the offseason, the 28-year-old has opened his first year in New York by going 1-1 with a 4.20 ERA with 13 strikeouts and eight walks in 15 innings over his first three starts. His last outing against the Athletics was his worst, as he allowed four earned runs on seven hits while walking three and fanning three. Canning will be a middling fantasy streamer in deeper formats whenever he makes his next start.
