Luis Gil Wins AL Rookie Of The Year Award

New York Yankees right-hander Luis Gil was named the 2024 American League Rookie of the Year on Monday night. Gil had a phenomenal year, considering he was two-plus years removed from Tommy John surgery. The 26-year-old received 15 of the 30 first-place votes to narrowly top Orioles outfielder Colton Cowser. Gil was initially expected to begin the year in the minors to work on his command after throwing just four innings at Single-A in 2023. He ended up making the Opening Day rotation, though, and took advantage, going 15-7 with a 3.50 ERA in 29 starts. Gil led all AL rookies in wins, innings pitched (151 2/3) and strikeouts (171). The Dominican hurler allowed one or fewer hits in five outings, which tied for the most by a rookie since the mound was moved in 1893. In winning the award, Gil became the 10th Yankees player to do so.

Luis Gil Scheduled To Start Game 4 Of ALCS

New York Yankees starting pitcher Luis Gil will make his first postseason start on Friday in Game 4 of the ALCS against the Cleveland Guardians. Gil was skipped over in favor of using Gerrit Cole for a second time in the ALDS, a decision that worked out well for the Yankees. Although Gil was very good for most of the season, he was prone to the occasional bad start and struggled with control even in his good starts. Expect the Yankees to be very careful with the 26-year-old and have a backup plan in place in case he struggles early. That being said, Gil could go out and dominate as well.

Luis Gil Available Out Of Bullpen In ALDS

New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone said he could see right-hander Luis Gil in a bulk-relief role or in a high-leverage role for one or two innings in the American League Division Series against the Kansas City Royals. If the Yankees advance to the AL Championship Series, Boone said that Gil would be in the starting rotation. New York has decided to go with right-hander Clarke Schmidt over Gil in a starting role for Game 3 of the ALDS on Wednesday at Kauffman Stadium. Gil had a nice bounce-back season in 2024 in his first big-league action since 2022, but he struggled much more in the second half and dealt with injury. In his final two starts of the regular season, Gil gave up 10 earned runs on 11 hits (four homers) while walking four and striking out 10 in 11 innings. He'll surely be on a short leash in a starting role if the Yankees advance to the ALCS.

Luis Gil Roughed Up In Final Start Of Regular Season

New York Yankees starting pitcher Luis Gil had a rough final outing of the 2024. The rookie gave up four HR and six ER during the Yankees' 9-4 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday, potentially damaging his shot at winning the AL Rookie of the Year award. Gil has been an important part of the Yankees' rotation, especially during Gerrit Cole's absence due to injury, but has tapered off in the latter half of the season. His season-long ERA finishes at 3.50 with a record of 15-7 after picking up the loss today. The 26-year-old may find himself as the fourth starter in the Yankees' playoff rotation behind Cole, Carlos Rodon and Clarke Schmidt. The volatility between his impressive strikeout and opponent batting average numbers mixed with his worrisome walk percentages may also result in him having a short leash during the Yankees' playoff run. Dynasty managers need not worry about his future, but Yankee fans will certainly be watching him anxiously in October.

Luis Gil Dominant In Return From Injured List On Friday

New York Yankees starting pitcher Luis Gil was dominant on Friday in his return from the 15-day IL, throwing six shutout innings and striking out seven in the Yankees' 3-0 win over the Chicago Cubs. Gil allowed just one hit and walked two batters while picking up the win and improving his record to 13-6. Prior to hitting the IL with a lower back strain Gil had been struggling mightily with his control, posting a 19% BB% in his last four starts while posting a 5.19 ERA in that timespan. Today's outing with just two walks showed a little more control from the 26-year-old, especially when paired with Gil being able to go six innings deep, something he hadn't done since before the All-Star break. Fantasy managers should feel comfortable with getting Gil back in their starting lineups. He will look to string together solid performances when he starts next Wednesday at Yankee Stadium when the Kansas City Royals come to town.

Luis Gil To Make His Return On Friday

New York Yankees right-hander Luis Gil (back) will come off the 15-day injured list on Friday to start against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field. Gil will be making his first start in the big leagues since Aug. 20 due to a back injury, but he shouldn't have too short of a leash after reaching the 80-pitch mark over 3 2/3 innings pitched in his lone minor-league rehab start. However, with a career high in innings pitched by a wide margin this year, the 26-year-old Dominican could be fading down the stretch. Gil has posted a 4.43 ERA (5.01 FIP) with 26 strikeouts and 17 walks in 22 1/3 innings over five starts since the All-Star break. The Yankees are putting him right back in the starting rotation upon his return from the IL, but there plans could change later in September and for the postseason. The Cubs as an offense have been right in the middle of the pack this year in terms of K's and team OPS.

Luis Gil Has "Very Good Chance" To Return This Weekend

There's a "very good chance" that New York Yankees right-hander Luis Gil (back) will return to the team's starting rotation this weekend to face the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field, according to manager Aaron Boone. Gil made a minor-league rehab start with Double-A Somerset and allowed three runs while striking out six in 3 2/3 innings (80 pitches). The 26-year-old is stretched out enough to rejoin the Yankees' rotation his next time out, and it appears it will come on the road against the suddenly hot Cubbies. Gil could be tiring down the stretch this year after having tossed a combined 33 1/3 innings over two seasons in his big-league career coming into 2024. He was lights-out in the first half of the year but also leads the league with 66 walks in 124 2/3 innings. Gil will be fantasy relevant in mixed leagues the rest of the way as long as he remains in the rotation and isn't having his workload monitored.

Luis Gil To Make A Rehab Start On Sunday

New York Yankees right-hander Luis Gil (back) is scheduled to begin a minor-league rehab assignment on Sunday, according to manager Aaron Boone. It will be Gil's first start since he left his start on Aug. 20 against the Cleveland Guardians after three-plus innings with lower-back discomfort. Gil landed on the 15-day injured list the next day, although Boone called the injury "minor." He was able to throw a successful bullpen session on Aug. 25 and threw roughly 65 pitches in a live batting practice session with Double-A Somerset on Aug. 27. The Yankees are planning to have Gil return in a starting role instead of as a long man out of the bullpen, which is good news for fantasy managers holding him. The 26-year-old Dominican has had a triumphant return from Tommy John surgery in 2024, although he did allow seven earned runs in seven innings in his two starts before landing on the IL.

Luis Gil Likely To Make Rehab Start In Five Days

New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone said that right-hander Luis Gil (back) will likely make a minor-league rehab start in five days. The Yankees have cleared Gil to face live hitters in a game setting early next week after he had a successful live batting practice session on Tuesday. If he looks good and doesn't suffer a setback with his back in his rehab start, the 26-year-old could return to New York's starting rotation as early as next weekend at Wrigley Field against the Chicago Cubs. The Yankees have said that they are planning to have Gil return in a starting role in September, but that could change if they want to limit his innings as the playoffs approach. Gil has been great for the Yanks in 2024 in his return from Tommy John surgery, going 12-6 with a 3.39 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 144 K's in 124 2/3 frames over 24 starts. Fatigue may be factoring in over the second half of the season, though.

Luis Gil Throws Bullpen Session

New York Yankees right-hander Luis Gil (back) threw a bullpen session on Sunday. The Yankees are now deciding whether Gil will throw a live batting practice session or appear in a minor-league rehab game. Manager Aaron Boone said it's possible it could be a minimum stay on the 15-day injured list for Gil. The 26-year-old is recovering from a strained lower back and could rejoin the Yankees' pitching staff when he's first eligible on Sept. 6. Because the injury isn't considered all that serious, the Yankees plan on keeping Gil in the starting rotation to close out the year when he returns from his IL stint. The Dominican hurler has been relevant in all fantasy leagues in his first full MLB season and is currently sporting a 12-6 record, 3.39 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 144 strikeouts in 124 2/3 innings over 24 starts. Gil hadn't thrown more than 29 1/3 frames in the big leagues before 2024, though, so fantasy managers have to be concerned he's tiring down the stretch.
