Max Fried News
The Atlanta Braves placed left-hander Max Fried (finger) on the 15-day injured list on Friday with a blister on his left index finger and recalled right-hander Darius Vines from the minors in a corresponding move. Fried looked great in his start on Thursday in a win over the Washington Nationals, giving up just one run on a solo homer while walking one and striking out seven in six innings of work, but his blister issues returned in the outing and now he'll miss the rest of the 2023 regular season. The Braves are most likely playing it safe with the 29-year-old All-Star and hope that the blister will be a thing of the past once the postseason begins. Fried will finish the 2023 campaign with a 8-1 record, 2.55 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 80 strikeouts in 77 2/3 innings over his 14 starts.
Atlanta Braves left-handed pitcher Max Fried (finger) was solid on Thursday, limiting the Washington Nationals to one run on three hits and a walk over six innings. He struck out seven. Near the end of his start, he had some fluid build-up in his left index finger, which was drained after he was taken out. Fried also skipped his last start with a blister on his left hand, so the Braves will likely be cautious with the lefty heading into the playoffs. Fried said he feels confident he can manage the situation, so he could still make what would likely be his final start at some point next week. Fantasy managers should keep a close eye on the situation, as a decision will need to be made on whether to start Fried in the finals.
Atlanta Braves left-hander Max Fried (finger) is scheduled to make his return to the starting rotation on Thursday against the Washington Nationals. Fried was skipped in the rotation the last time around after developing a hot spot on his left index finger during his start last Tuesday against the Philadelphia Phillies, but he was able to throw a successful bullpen session on Monday and was cleared to return later this week. The Braves, who have already clinched the National League East crown, weren't going to take any chances with the 29-year-old All-Star. Injuries have prevented him from a full workload in 2023, but he's been excellent when he's been available with a 7-1 record, 2.64 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 73 strikeouts in 71 2/3 innings across 13 starts. Start him in D.C. on Thursday.

It was just another rock-solid season for the Braves' lefty, posting career-bests (ignoring 2020) in ERA (2.48), WHIP (1.01), and K-BB% (18.8%). He once again did it with a strikeout rate that was around league average (23%), but the walk rate and the weak contact generated made that a non-issue. Fried has long lacked a dominant fastball, and that didn't change in 2023 (7.7% SwStr% on the fastball he threw 32.5% of the time), but all the other arrows in his quiver are sharp. He posted a great 16.6% SwStr% on the curve, a 13.9% mark on the slider, and a 19.9% on the changeup. The key ingredient here is that hitters just could not barrel up anything he offered (4.0% barrel rate overall, the fastball had the worst mark of just 5.4%). Fried is a proven stud in the league. The other thing keeping us away from drafting him confidently as a fantasy ace is if you play in a league where strikeout rate is a factor - because he's not going to help your team there. The ERA, WHIP, and wins are more than enough to cover for it even in that situation; this fantasy writer has nothing negative to say about Fried in 2023.
