Matthew Liberatore News
The St. Louis Cardinals optioned left-hander Matthew Liberatore and right-hander Dakota Hudson to Triple-A Memphis on Tuesday. The Cardinals will roll with Adam Wainwright, Miles Mikolas, Jordan Montgomery, Jack Flaherty and Steven Matz in their five-man starting rotation to begin the 2023 regular season, so Liberatore and Hudson will begin in the minors. Liberatore is the team's No. 6 prospect, per MLB Pipeline, but the 23-year-old southpaw will need to show better life on his fastball if he's going to have continued success once he gets another shot in St. Louis' rotation. Hudson, 28, will work on building up his velocity at Memphis before the Cardinals consider him a rotation option at the big-league level.
The St. Louis Cardinals recalled left-handed starter Matthew Liberatore from Triple-A Memphis on Wednesday. The 22-year-old rookie has made eight appearances in his first season in the Majors this year. Six of those eight outings were starts. All told, the left-hander has pitched to a 5.46 ERA and a 5.03 FIP in 29.2 innings of work. He's also logged 25 strikeouts and 14 walks in his time with the Cardinals. St. Louis also optioned pitchers Dakota Hudson and JoJo Romero to Triple-A to make room for Liberatore and right-hander Jordan Hicks, who was activated from the 15-day injured list.
St. Louis Cardinals pitching prospect Matthew Liberatore went six scoreless frames for Triple-A Memphis on Thursday. The lefty allowed just four hits and struck out seven on the evening, but did walk three batters. The 22-year-old has now gone back-to-back starts without allowing a run. Liberatore has gotten some action in the big leagues this season with eight appearances (six starts) and gone 2-1 with an unattractive 5.46 ERA. For Memphis, in 21 starts, the lefty has gone 7-8 with a 5.12 ERA. One of the top pitching prospects entering the season, Liberatore has struggled compared to his previous year. Despite that, he is still just 22 years of age and dynasty managers should remain patient with the potential for him to breakout in 2023 or beyond.

Matthew Liberatore's light dimmed a tad last year and he's fallen down prospect rankings in the last couple of years. That was mainly due to his struggles at Triple-A in 2022, before his call-up to the Cardinals which didn't go great either. In 22 starts at Triple-A, Liberatore had a 7-9 W-L record, 5.17 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 116 Ks (115.0 IP). His 4.27 xFIP suggests he ran into some bad luck but his struggles in the Majors (albeit a small sample size) do warrant some expectations to be tempered. In nine appearances (seven starts) for the Cardinals, Liberatore had a 2-2 W-L record, 5.97 ERA, 1.73 WHIP and 28 Ks (34.2 IP). The excellent control Liberatore displayed throughout his Triple-A career disappeared as his 11.2% BB% shows, while the 17.4% K% highlights an issue putting away hitters. But, Liberatore is still only 23 years old and has a chance to compete for a spot on the Cardinals roster, although it'll likely take an injury for him to make the rotation. I'm certainly not willing to write off Liberatore's chances of being a fantasy-viable pitcher based on last year. He's not someone I'm targeting as an option in 2023 redraft leagues but you could do worse taking him in the last round, especially if he does break camp with the Cardinals.
