St. Louis Cardinals infielder Jose Fermin has made the team's Opening Day roster, sources told The Athletic's Katie Woo. Fermin will serve in a backup utility role and as a contact bat off the bench. The 25-year-old beat out Jose Barrero for one of the final spots on the team's Opening Day roster. The Dominican infielder has hit .282 (11-for-39) with a homer, five doubles, nine RBI and two runs scored in 17 Grapefruit League games. He's likely to see most of his playing time at second base in St. Louis, especially if Nolan Gorman's struggles from last year continue. Fermin tore up Triple-A pitching in 2024, but he struggled offensively in 45 games at the big-league level, slashing just .155/.241/.197 with no homers, four RBI, two steals and seven runs scored in 79 plate appearances. At best, he's a deep bench stash in NL-only leagues for his speed.
St. Louis Cardinals second baseman Jose Fermin went 3-for-4 with his sixth home run of the season to power Triple-A Memphis to a victory. Through 26 games at Triple-A this season, Fermin has posted an excellent .393/.481/.708 slash line with a 13:3 BB:K and nine stolen bases. Fermin has appeared in only 30 games in the majors over the past two years, made just nine appearances earlier this season, and holds a cumulative .227/.338/.242 line. However, the 25-year-old is on pace to set career-highs in every category in the minors and could earn himself a more extended opportunity in the majors later this summer. When he is promoted, he is worth an addition in NL-only formats, as he could provide you with a nice power and speed combination.
The St. Louis Cardinals are expected to call up rookie infielder Jose Fermin from the minors to join the team for their weekend series against the Chicago White Sox, according to a source. Fermin had his spring interrupted by a quadriceps injury and has gone just 4-for-24 since rejoining Triple-A Memphis. The Cardinals are in need of more infield depth with both Tommy Edman (wrist) and Brendan Donovan (arm) dealing with injuries heading into next week's All-Star break, so Fermin could see a few starts this weekend to get the club to the break. The 24-year-old will be making his major-league debut when he gets into a game, but he can be ignored for now for fantasy purposes.
