Panthers To Sign Charles Harris

The Carolina Panthers are set to sign veteran defensive end Charles Harris, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports. Harris, a former first-round pick of the Miami Dolphins has 16.5 career sacks. Most recently, Harris recorded 1.5 sacks for the Detroit Lions last season. The Panthers are looking for a spark with Derrick Brown (meniscus) reportedly feared to have a season-ending injury. Harris could provide a veteran presence and still might have some pass-rush juice left in the tank. The Panthers D/ST should still be avoided for fantasy purposes.

Lions Place Charles Harris On Injured Reserve

The Detroit Lions placed defensive end Charles Harris (groin) on Injured Reserve on Monday and signed defensive end/linebacker James Houston to the active roster from the practice squad in a corresponding move. Harris missed the Thanksgiving loss to the Buffalo Bills last Thursday and four other games this year due to his groin injury, and now he'll miss at least the next four games while on IR. The 27-year-old has produced one sack, 14 tackles (10 solo), four QB hits and a forced fumble in his six games played for Detroit in his second season with the team. With Harris sidelined, expect Austin Bryant and John Cominsky to see more defensive snaps for the Lions.

Lions Re-Sign Charles Harris

The Detroit Lions re-signed pass-rusher Charles Harris to a two-year deal worth $14 million on Tuesday, according to a source. In his first year in Detroit in 2021, the former first-rounder had a career-high 65 tackles (34 solo), 10 tackles for loss, 16 QB hits, two forced fumbles and a career-high 7.5 sacks in 17 games (14 starts). Before last season, he hadn't started more than five games in a single season for the Miami Dolphins or Atlanta Falcons. The 27-year-old had a combined 6.5 sacks and 42 solo tackles in his first four seasons with the Dolphins and Falcons from 2017-20. The Lions are hoping he can repeat his performance from a year ago.

Falcons Decline Charles Harris' Option

The Atlanta Falcons declined the $10.051 million fifth-year option on defensive end Charles Harris on Monday, according to a source. The Falcons acquired Harris from the Miami Dolphins last Friday in exchange for a 2021 seventh-round draft pick. The 22nd overall pick in 2017 had just 3.5 sacks in 1,196 snaps for Miami, so he will have to prove himself in Atlanta this year in order to remain with the team beyond the 2020 season. The Falcons are hoping Harris can help a pass rush that finished with only 28 sacks in the 2019 campaign. They've gotten pressure on a league-worst 22 percent of dropbacks in the last two years. Harris, 25, will make $1.943 million in the final year of his rookie deal.

Falcons Trade For Defensive End Charles Harris

The Atlanta Falcons struck a trade with the Miami Dolphins and received defensive end Charles Harris for a seventh-round pick, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reports. It was no surprise the Falcons were looking to upgrade their defense this offseason after finishing last season allowing 355.8 yards per game. Therefore, the team invested in a defensive tackle, safety, linebacker, and cornerback during the draft. Harris was a first-round pick in 2017 and looks to jumpstart his career in Atlanta as he didn't have a great tenure in Miami. He brings 61 total tackles, 3.5 sacks, and one recovered fumble to the Falcons. Still only 25-years-old, the DE could bring great value to the Falcons Defense, but it depends on how big of a role he receives.

Charles Harris Week-To-Week

Miami Dolphins defensive end Charles Harris (calf) is "week-to-week" after injuring himself in practice last Friday, according to head coach Adam Gase. Miami's defensive line has real concerns with Cameron Wake also missing the last two games after having surgery. They'll need Wake back if they want to have a consistent pass rush, starting in Week 7 against the Lions.

Dolphins Pick Charles Harris At No. 22

The Miami Dolphins selected Missouri defensive end Charles Harris with the No. 22 overall pick in the 2017 NFL draft. Harris fills a big-time defensive line need for Miami. The pass rusher has a bevy of moves to get to the quarterback and good initial burst but has struggled with run defense. Harris' 4.82-second 40-yard dash at the Combine and weak broad jump likely caused him to drop to the Dolphins in the first round. Because of his shortcoming in run stopping, he could be limited to a situational pass-rushing role in the NFL eventually.
