George Fant News
New York Jets offensive tackle George Fant said he has discussed a contract extension with the team. Fant is entering the final year of his current contract in 2022, and it appears the Jets are willing to extend him after he stepped up at left tackle last year in the absence of Mekhi Becton. The 29-year-old veteran performed well enough in 2021 that he will enter training camp this summer in a competition with Becton for the starting left tackle spot. Fant has experience at both tackle spots in the NFL, but he thinks his best spot is on the quarterback's blind side. He spent the last two years in New York after spending the first three years of his career with the Seattle Seahawks.
The New York Jets agreed to a three-year, $30 million deal with former Seattle Seahawks offensive tackle George Fant on Monday. The deal includes $13.7 million in guarantees. Given the Jets weak offensive line in 2018, Fant will likely be asked to start at either right or left tackle in 2020. The 27-year-old has started just seven of 16 games in each of the last two seasons with Seattle and hasn't been very consistent, which is more bad news for running back Le'Veon Bell's chances at bouncing back next season. Gang Green should be looking to bolster their O-line through the draft in order to keep quarterback Sam Darnold upright.
Seattle Seahawks offensive lineman/tight end George Fant went down with an ankle sprain in Thursday's game that head coach Pete Carroll described as "legit." While that's not a medical definition, it gives nothing but bad feelings about Fant's timetable. Fant is a hybrid player for Seattle, often working as a sixth offensive lineman/blocking tight end, and if he's lost for a significant amount of time, especially if it's the type of sprain that nags and lingers, that could cause some flux in Seattle's roster decisions for the start of the year. More information will come soon, but for now, expect Russell Wilson to be real interested in Fant's condition.
