Jalen Richard Enters Season As No. 2 Back

Las Vegas Raiders running back Jalen Richard will open the 2020 regular season as the primary backup to Josh Jacobs, and he's also in line to return punts on special teams. Richard's third-down pass-catching role came into clearer focus when the team traded rookie Lynn Bowden Jr. to the Dolphins. Jacobs is expected to have a much bigger role in the passing game in his sophomore season, but don't ignore the fact that Richard secured 36 receptions in 2019. Still, the 26-year-old probably won't have standalone fantasy value, even in PPR leagues, unless Jacobs goes down with an injury. Even in a great matchup against Carolina in Week 1, Richard should be firmly planted on your benches in deeper leagues.

Jalen Richard Re-Signs With Raiders

The Las Vegas Raiders and running back Jalen Richard agreed to a contract extension on Wednesday, according to a source. Richard served as the third-down back behind rookie workhorse Josh Jacobs. The 26-year-old had a career-low 39 carries as a result for 145 yards and no touchdowns. He added 36 receptions on 43 targets for 323 yards and no touchdowns. Richard is a valuable pass-catcher out of the backfield, but with Jacobs' role expected to grow even more in the passing game in 2020, Richard will strictly be a PPR handcuff for Jacobs owners.

Jalen Richard In Walking Boot

Oakland Raiders running back Jalen Richard was spotted wearing a walking boot on Monday. It's unclear what is exactly wrong with Richard, but he'll have the offseason to heal up after Oakland finished 7-9 and out of the playoffs. The impending free agent served as the No. 3 back for most of the season behind rookie Josh Jacobs and Deandre Washington. He saw more run to end the season with Jacobs injured, but Richard finished with only 39 carries for 145 yards (3.7 yards per carry) and no touchdowns on the ground. He added 36 receptions for 323 yards on the ground. Primarily a third-down pass-catching back, Richard is unlikely to receive a featured role anywhere on the open market.
