Jeff Okudah News
Detroit Lions first-round rookie cornerback Jeff Okudah (core) confirmed on his Twitter page that he underwent successful core muscle surgery. "I've been through a roller coaster of emotions this past week, but I just wanted to share with everyone that I underwent a successful core muscle procedure to fix an injury that I've dealt with for a while now," Okudah said. The third overall pick in this year's draft played his last game of his rookie season in Week 11 against the Panthers. His core muscle injury is something that dated back to his college days at Ohio State, so hopefully that won't be an issue for him moving forward. Okudah was inconsistent in 2020, recording 47 combined tackles, one interception and two passes defensed in nine games. Detroit's defense needs to be ignored in Week 15 against the Titans.
The Detroit Lions selected Ohio State cornerback Jeff Okudah with the third overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft on Thursday. It's back-to-back Ohio State picks, with defensive end Chase Young going second overall to the Redskins. The Lions traded Darius Slay to the Eagles this offseason, so Okudah will come in right away and help replace Slay in Detroit's secondary. Okudah was the top corner in this year's class. He's got great size and length and loves to play physical at the line of scrimmage. The Lions were pretty bad against the pass all of last year, even with Slay, but hopefully Okudah can solidify their secondary for years to come.
Detroit Lions general manager Bob Quinn is favoring Ohio State cornerback Jeff Okudah with the No. 3 overall pick, while head coach Matt Patricia wants Auburn defensive tackle Derrick Brown, according to a league source. And that's if the Lions even stay at No. 3 overall, as the Dolphins have been trying to move up in recent days to take either an offensive tackle or a quarterback. But if Detroit doesn't take a trade to move back a few spots, they're almost certainly going with a defensive prospect, as their defense could use the help at every level. If they think they can get either Okudah or Brown at No. 5, it's very possible we see them move out of No. 3.
