Former Seattle Seahawks linebacker Shaquem Griffin announced his retirement from professional football on Wednesday. Griffin had his left hand amputated at age 4 because of amniotic-band syndrome and became the first player with one hand to be drafted in the NFL's modern era when Seattle took him in the fifth round in 2018. In three seasons with Seattle, the 27-year-old had 25 tackles (17 solo), six QB hits, one sack and a pass defensed in 46 games (one start). He signed with the Miami Dolphins last year but was released before the start of the regular season. Griffin wrote in his Players Tribune piece that "Football was always Plan B."
Miami Dolphins linebacker Shaquem Griffin was one of the more surprising cuts on Tuesday. He was added to the team in July as linebacker depth. Griffin was mainly a special teams player in Seattle, but has decent upside. On Wednesday, he was brought back to the Dolphins on the practice squad. At least now, Miami can bring Griffin to the active roster if an injury happens or someone is underperforming. Griffin is by no means a superstar, but certainly worth a roster spot. He could be a decent part-time linebacker for the Dolphins.
Shaquem Griffin Drawing Interest From Multiple Teams
Ex-Seattle Seahawks linebacker Shaquem Griffin has drawn interest from multiple teams and should find a home soon, according to sources informed of the situation. The fifth-rounder in 2018 appeared in 46 games for the Seahawks, recording one sack, six QB hits and 25 tackles. Griffin's twin brother, Shaquill Griffin, signed a big deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars this offseason. The twins played together at UCF and in Seattle, so Griffin may be looking to join his brother in Jacksonville. His new club could be looking at him as a full-time pass-rusher after he played off the ball in Seattle. The 25-year-old became the odd-man out in Seattle after the team added Jordyn Brooks, Cody Barton and Ben Burr-Kirven to the position in recent seasons.
Seattle Seahawks third-year linebacker Shaquem Griffin is one of The Seattle Times' Bob Condotta's "bubble" players for training camp this summer. He has yet to carve out a role as a starting linebacker after being a fifth-round pick out of Central Florida in 2018. Seattle has also added three draft picks in the last two years -- Jordyn Brooks, Cody Barton and Ben Burr-Kirven -- at the position, in addition to starters Bobby Wagner and K.J. Wright. Veteran Bruce Irvin is also in the picture. Griffin will likely need to add something as a pass-rusher in order to have a shot at making the regular season roster out of camp. His salary cap number also continues to go up ($829,405) this year, but with practice squads likely being increased to 16 in 2020, there's a chance he sticks with the team even if he doesn't make the roster.
Seattle Seahawks linebacker Shaquem Griffin couldn't have scripted it any better. On third down of a playoff game in Lambeau Field, Griffin made a beautiful sprint around some traffic and up the gut of the offense to sack Aaron Rodgers. To top it off, though Shaquem was given full credit for the drop, he actually had a partner in the tackle. His twin brother, Shaquill Griffin arrived around the outside edge just a hair after Shaquem, and the two got to celebrate as the Green Bay crowd gasped. Shaquem's role with the Seahawks Defense has been altered to allow him to rush more often, and he's been much more successful this season. Hopefully, he'll continue to grow with the team next year.
Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said rookie linebacker Shaquem Griffin will start in place of K.J. Wright at weakside linebacker in Week 1 against the Broncos. Griffin has been a feel-good story in training camp and the preseason, and it will continue into the regular season with Wright on the shelf. Unfortunately, Griffin shouldn't be on anyone's radar in IDP leagues just yet.
