Wide receiver Tavon Austin officially announced his retirement from the NFL on social media on Tuesday. Austin was originally drafted by the St. Louis Rams with the eighth overall pick in 2013 out of West Virginia. He spent the first five years of his NFL career with the Rams before playing for the Dallas Cowboys, Green Bay Packers and Jacksonville Jaguars. The 34-year-old hadn't appeared in an NFL game since 2021 with the Jags, when he caught 24 of his 37 targets for 213 yards and one touchdown in 13 games (three starts). The nine-year NFL veteran finished his career with a total of 244 catches on 407 targets for 2,239 yards and 16 touchdowns in 113 games (53 starts). Austin's two best seasons were in 2015 and 2016 with the Rams, when he combined for 982 yards and eight touchdowns.
The Buffalo Bills released wide receiver Tavon Austin and punter Matt Haack on Monday. There were just too many talented and younger receivers on the Bills roster ahead of Austin, so he'll have to look to latch on with another team before the start of the 2022 regular season. The former first-round pick of the Los Angeles Rams back in 2013 has never lived up to the hype and was mostly a gadget player in his five seasons with the Rams from 2013-17. Since then, he's bounced around with the Dallas Cowboys, Green Bay Packers and Jacksonville Jaguars. In 13 games (three starts) with the Jags in 2021, Austin caught 24 passes for 213 yards and one touchdown on 37 targets.
The Buffalo Bills signed free-agent wide receiver Tavon Austin to an undisclosed deal on Thursday, according to a source. The former eighth overall pick by the Rams in 2013 had 24 catches for 213 yards and one touchdown on 37 targets in 13 games (three starts) for the Jacksonville Jaguars last year. The 32-year-old will try to earn a roster spot in a talented Bills offense, and if he does, he'll likely be battling Isaiah McKenzie and rookie Khalil Shakir as a depth receiver behind Stefon Diggs, Gabriel Davis and Jamison Crowder. Austin has mostly been a gadget player in his time in the NFL, and he's totaled 244 catches (407 targets) for 2,239 receiving yards and 16 touchdowns in nine seasons. He's also added 199 carries for 1,361 yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground.
Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Tavon Austin caught all five of his targets for 54 yards in the team's 37-19 Week 5 loss to the Tennessee Titans. Austin, who is 5-foot-8, was once again puzzlingly thrust into a part-time outside receiver role with D.J. Chark Jr. (ankle) out for the season. Austin's Week 5 performance is indicative of his low-ceiling as an outside receiver, as he's just not suited to win at the NFL level in that role given his small stature and questionable route-running ability. The speedster is best left on waiver wires in all formats.
Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Tavon Austin caught just one pass for eight yards in the team's 24-21 Week 4 loss to the Bengals on Thursday night. Austin got some serious playing time after D.J. Chark Jr. (ankle) left the game early on, but he failed to capitalize. Austin was lining up at the outside "X receiver" position in place of Chark by virtue of poor coaching, and he even comically ran a goal-line fade route at one point. At 5-foot-8 179 pounds, Austin won't be winning many battles on the outside even if the coaching staff foolishly keeps him in that role going forward. Austin can be safely avoided in all fantasy formats.
Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Tavon Austin was placed on the injured reserve list on Thursday. Austin was a surprise addition to the team's 53-man roster, but now he'll miss at least the first three games of the season. Austin was one of the candidates for the team's fourth wideout job prior to going on IR. The addition of Tyron Johnson to the offense likely relegates Austin to gadget/special teams duties when he does return. Austin is firmly off the radar in all fantasy formats.
The Jacksonville Jaguars have signed wide receiver and kick returner Tavon Austin to add to an already crowded wide receiver room. Austin spent last season with the Green Bay Packers after previous stints with the Los Angeles Rams and Dallas Cowboys. He caught five passes for 20 yards last year while being active for all 16 games, but he started in just four of them. The 31-year-old will likely have a very limited role in Jacksonville while playing behind D.J. Chark, Laviska Shenault Jr. and Marvin Jones. Austin is well off the fantasy radar.
The New York Jets are working out veteran free-agent wide receiver Tavon Austin on Wednesday, according to a source. Austin played for the San Francisco 49ers and Green Bay Packers last season, but he caught just five passes for 20 yards in four games. The 31-year-old was a bust with the Rams after they took him eighth overall in the 2013 NFL draft out of West Virginia. In five seasons with the Rams to begin his career, Austin caught 194 passes for 1,689 yards and 12 touchdowns in 75 games (50 starts). In 2018 and 2019 with the Dallas Cowboys, he had 21 receptions (37 targets) for 317 yards and three scores. Even if he lands with Gang Green, don't expect Austin to have much of an offensive role.
The Green Bay Packers are adding wide receiver Tavon Austin to the organization for the stretch run, giving quarterbackAaron Rodgers yet another potential deep-ball threat. Austin last appeared in the NFL last year as a member of the Cowboys, when he hauled in 13 receptions for 177 yards and one touchdown. Having previously been brought in for a workout, the Packers are immediately elevating Austin to the active roster, which should make him available for Week 13 against Philadelphia. With so many options at Rodgers' disposal, it's hard to discern a path to fantasy relevance for Austin, although he'll be a name to keep an eye on should an injury strike any of the Packers trusted pass-catching targets.
The San Francisco 49ers reached an injury settlement with wide receiver Tavon Austin (knee) on Tuesday, and he is no longer on their Injured Reserve list. Austin was put on IR before the 2020 regular season started. He spent the last two years in Dallas, recording 21 catches on 37 targets for 317 yards and three touchdowns in 21 games. The eighth overall pick in the 2013 draft by the Rams, Austin had his best season in 2016, catching 58 passes for 509 yards and three touchdowns. He has just 15 touchdowns in seven NFL seasons and has essentially become a little-used gadget player in recent seasons. Don't expect Austin to resurface anywhere in 2021 as a fantasy relevant option.
