Luke Hughes Agrees to Seven-Year Deal Wih Devils

New Jersey Devils defenseman Luke Hughes signed a seven-year, $63 million contract with the team on Wednesday. This marks the end of a lengthy contract saga, as Hughes spent the entire offseason as a restricted free agent and hasn't been with the team during training camp. Due to his absence, Hughes might be slow out of the gate at the start of the season. However, Hughes' potential makes him an appealing fantasy option. At 22 years old, Hughes already has 155 games under his belt, having collected 93 points (17 goals, 76 assists). 41 of his points have come on the power play.

Devils Optimistic About Signing Luke Hughes

New Jersey Devils defenseman Luke Hughes is still a free agent with training camp approaching in a couple of weeks, but the team remains optimistic about finalizing a new contract with him. "Eventually, this will get done," Devils general manager Tom Fitzgerald told James Murphy of RG Media. "The 11th hour is training camp. Right? A lot of times, a lot of the stuff doesn't get done until the 11th hour. We're hoping we can get something done here in quick fashion, and both sides are working hard at it; that's for sure." The Devils are reportedly aiming for an eight-year maximum term or a bridge deal in negotiations with the restricted free agent, while Hughes is said to prefer a five-year contract to align with his brother and teammate Jack. Hughes has started his NHL career with consecutive 40-point seasons and still has a lot more fantasy potential.

Luke Hughes Recovering From Shoulder Surgery

New Jersey Devils defenseman Luke Hughes recently underwent successful shoulder surgery, the team announced on Monday. New Jersey finished the season without Hughes after he was injured in the playoff opener against the Carolina Hurricanes. Hughes had his second consecutive 40-point campaign in 2024-25, notching seven goals and 37 assists in 71 appearances. He registered 16 power-play assists, ranking third on the team. Hughes will be 22 next season and still has plenty of potential. The Devils anticipate that he will recover fully before training camp.

Luke Hughes Not Ready To Return For Game 5

New Jersey Devils defenseman Luke Hughes (upper body) has been ruled out for Tuesday's elimination game against the Carolina Hurricanes. Hughes has not played in the first-round series since Game 2 and may have made his final appearances for the season if the Devils cannot win Game 5. Dougie Hamilton will continue to lead the Devils defense on Tuesday night. He has averaged 24:39 of ice time in the series but hasn't performed at his best. Hamilton's offensive impact has been limited to one assist, and he has blocked six shots while delivering 10 hits.

Luke Hughes To Remain Out On Sunday

New Jersey Devils defenseman Luke Hughes (upper body) will miss a third consecutive game on Sunday against the Carolina Hurricanes. Hughes suffered an upper-body injury in Game 1 of the series. Following a trip to the locker room, he was able to finish the contest, but the Devils have since removed Hughes from the lineup. This has allowed Dougie Hamilton to reclaim a spot on the top power-play unit. However, Hamilton has had a quiet series, posting one assist in three games. He went scoreless in 31:16 of ice time in Game 3, including 6:21 with the man advantage.

Luke Hughes Remains Out On Friday

New Jersey Devils defenseman Luke Hughes (upper body) has been ruled out for Friday's Game 3 against the Carolina Hurricanes. He will miss a second consecutive game in the series due to an upper-body injury suffered in Game 1. Brenden Dillon (lower body) isn't ready to return, either. However, the Devils defense is expected to get Jonas Siegenthaler (lower body) back on Friday night. He is projected to slot into the third defensive pairing, pushing Dennis Cholowski out of the lineup. Hughes and Dillon will have their next chance to return on Sunday in Game 4.

Luke Hughes Out On Tuesday

New Jersey Devils defenseman Luke Hughes (upper body) will not play in Tuesday's Game 2 against the Carolina Hurricanes. The 21-year-old sustained an upper-body injury during Sunday's Game 1 loss. After a brief exit, Hughes was able to finish the contest, but he isn't game-ready for Tuesday. Hughes led all Devils defensemen in scoring during the regular season, posting 44 points (seven goals, 37 assists) in 71 games. Brenden Dillon (lower body) was also injured on Sunday, giving Dennis Cholowski and Simon Nemec an opportunity to enter the lineup for Game 2. Dougie Hamilton will take over Hughes' responsibilities on the first power-play unit.

Luke Hughes Won't Play Against Red Wings

New Jersey Devils defenseman Luke Hughes (rest) will exit the lineup for Wednesday's encounter with the Detroit Red Wings. He has carried a big workload during Dougie Hamilton's (lower body) absence and will get some well-deserved time off ahead of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Hughes is set to finish the regular season as New Jersey's highest-scoring defenseman, boasting 44 points (seven goals, 37 assists) in 71 appearances. Hamilton is on 40 points (nine goals, 31 assists) ahead of his return to action on Wednesday night. With Hamilton back in the fold, Hughes' usage is likely to take a hit during the postseason.

Luke Hughes Scores Goal, Adds Assist In Victory

New Jersey Devils defenseman Luke Hughes tallied a goal and an assist during their 3-2 shootout victory over the Minnesota Wild. Hughes opened the scoring in the first period with a wrist shot. Later in the third, he would tally the secondary assist on Nico Hischier's 34th goal of the season. This outing extended his point streak to three games. Since March 1 (15 games), Hughes scored two goals and added 14 helpers, with eight of his helpers coming on the power play. During this stretch, he also logged 28 total shots on goal and added 15 blocked shots. Through 66 total games this season, the 21-year-old scored seven goals and added 34 assists. Fantasy managers should continue to start Hughes in all formats as he sees top minutes in all aspects of the game on the New Jersey blue line.

Luke Hughes Makes His Season Debut On Thursday

New Jersey Devils defenseman Luke Hughes (shoulder) will jump into the lineup for his season debut on Thursday versus Detroit. Hughes underwent shoulder surgery in September, which has kept him out for the first nine games of the season. The 21-year-old had a good rookie campaign in 2023-24 with 47 points (nine goals, 38 assists) in 82 games. Hughes should see top-four minutes and a healthy amount of power-play time. He notched 25 points (four goals, 21 assists) with the man advantage last term, ranking third on the team in power-play points.

Luke Hughes Remains 5-7 Weeks Away From Returning

New Jersey Devils defenseman Luke Hughes (shoulder) has yet to resume skating and remains 5-7 weeks away from being able to return to action. Hughes suffered a shoulder injury in mid-September and is set to miss the first month of the regular season. Hughes had a highly productive debut campaign in 2023-24 with 47 points (nine goals, 38 assists) in 82 games. 25 points (four goals, 21 assists) came on the power play for Hughes. Hughes' absence could give rookie Seamus Casey a spot on the second power-play unit to start the year, with Dougie Hamilton set to roll with the first unit.

Luke Hughes Out 6-8 Weeks

New Jersey Devils defenseman Luke Hughes (shoulder) has been ruled out for 6-8 weeks. Hughes is recovering from a shoulder injury he suffered earlier in the month. Luckily, Hughes has escaped surgery, but he will miss time at the start of the 2024-25 regular season. Once he's back in the lineup, Hughes will try to produce a strong sophomore year after being among the top scoring rookies last term. Hughes registered 47 points (nine goals, 38 assists) in 82 outings, finishing behind only Chicago's Connor Bedard (61) in scoring among first-year players. The 21-year-old posted the third-most power-play points on the team (25), so the Devil could struggle with the man advantage early in the new campaign.

Luke Hughes To Play For USA At World Championships

New Jersey Devils defenseman Luke Hughes will head to Czechia to play for Team USA at the upcoming World Hockey Championship. The 20-year-old enjoyed a big-time rookie season from the blueline, registering nine goals and 47 points on 135 shots while skating in all 82 regular-season games. Unfortunately, the Devils didn't get much in terms of goaltending and ended up finishing 10 points back of the Washington Capitals for the second and final Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference. Luke's brother and teammate, Jack, underwent season-ending shoulder surgery but should be good to go for training camp next season.

Luke Hughes Racks Up Three Power-Play Assists

New Jersey Devils defenseman Luke Hughes had it going on with the man advantage all night against Winnipeg on Thursday, finishing a 4-1 victory with three power-play assists. Jack Hughes scored a pair of goals, and Nico Hischier also benefited from Hughes' fantastic job on the power play. He's the first rookie defenseman to tally three-plus power-play assists in a single game since his brother Quinn Hughes in 2019. Throughout the season, Hughes has done most of his damage on the power play, with only 17 of his 38 points coming during even-strength play. He's tied with Minnesota's Brock Faber for the second-most points among first-year players.

Luke Hughes Bags A Power-Play Goal Wednesday

New Jersey Devils defenseman Luke Hughes scored a power-play goal in Wednesday's 3-2 loss to the Canadiens. The talented rearguard sparked a comeback from a two-goal deficit in the third period, but the Devils were still left empty-handed. It's Hughes' first goal since he finished last month with a three-game goal streak. He boasts eight goals in total for the season, which puts Hughes among the top defensemen in the league. The 20-year-old has also collected 16 assists in 42 games during his rookie campaign.

Luke Hughes Collects Two Assists In Win Over Penguins

New Jersey Devils defenseman Luke Hughes put in an impressive performance against the Penguins on Thursday, recording two assists and a plus-three rating in a 5-2 road win. Both of his helpers came in the third frame when the Devils turned a tie game into a comfortable victory. Hughes reached 10 points for the campaign with Thursday's effort. His scoring pace has dropped lately, but he's still having a good rookie campaign, and Hughes' productivity is bound to improve again once the Devils have Nico Hischier (upper body) and Jack Hughes (shoulder) back in the lineup.

Luke Hughes Posts Two Assists In Friday's Win

New Jersey Devils defenseman Luke Hughes contributed two assists as the team defeated Buffalo 5-4 on Friday. His second helper was a power-play assist in the third period to his brother Jack. He's logging time on the third defensive pairing but has nailed down a spot on the first power-play unit, and Hughes led the team with 6:34 of power-play time Friday.
