Hurston Waldrep Recalled, Starting on Saturday

The Atlanta Braves have recalled right-handed pitcher Hurston Waldrep from Triple-A Gwinnett, optioning left-hander Dylan Dodd as the corresponding move. Waldrep will start the first game of Atlanta's Saturday doubleheader against the Miami Marlins. The 23-year-old has spent most of 2025 in the minor leagues. In 91 2/3 innings (19 starts) at Triple-A, Waldrep is 7-8 with a 4.42 ERA, 1.47 WHIP, and 92 strikeouts. However, he's been better of late, pitching to a 0.78 ERA over his last 23 innings. If Waldrep pitches well, he could earn an extended look at the big league level down the stretch of the season.

Hurston Waldrep Could be Recalled to Start This Weekend

Atlanta Braves pitching prospect Hurston Waldrep could be called upon again to fill a much-needed rotation spot in the upcoming week. The Braves have a doubleheader scheduled for Saturday at home against Miami, with Erick Fedde currently slated to pitch the first game, but no starter has been announced for the second game. Waldrep had been recalled to pitch in Sunday's continuation of the Speedway Classic, giving the team 5 2/3 innings of solid work, allowing just one run on three hits and two walks while striking out four on the way to earning the win. The Braves' fourth-ranked prospect has been called upon in the big leagues before, making two starts in 2024, although without success. The 23-year-old has a first-round pedigree, though, and has pitched better at Triple-A as of late, posting a 0.78 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, and striking out 23 batters in 23 innings over his last four starts, so he has momentum on his side. Miami has been playing better lately, but Waldrep could be a sneaky waiver add or DFS option if the recall comes to fruition.

Hurston Waldrep Strikes Out Eight on Tuesday

Atlanta Braves right-handed pitching prospect Hurston Waldrep tossed seven shutout innings en route to picking up the victory over Triple-A Durham on Tuesday evening. In this outing, the right-hander allowed just five hits and one walk. He struck out eight. Since the start of the month, the 23-year-old has put together a strong stretch of outings and could be nearing a return to the major leagues. Since July 1, Waldrep has posted an impressive 0.78 ERA with a 1.09 WHIP. During these 23 innings of work, the right-hander struck out 23 hitters and allowed just 10 walks. However, during June, he held a much higher 6.23 ERA and a 1.52 WHIP. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor his status as he could be in the mix to earn his second taste of the majors with Atlanta falling out of the playoff picture.

First-Half Struggles for Hurston Waldrep

Atlanta Braves pitching prospect Hurston Waldrep struggled over the first half of 2025, posting a 4.97 ERA, 1.56 WHIP, and a 9.1 percent strikeout-to-walk rate. The whiffs have gone away from the right-hander, as his 21.8 percent strikeout rate and 11.6 percent swinging strike rate are the second lowest at any level of his minor league career. There's been plenty of opportunity in the Atlanta rotation, and Waldrep has just been unable to seize it. He's made two big league starts in his career but failed to complete four innings in either, allowing six and seven runs, plus eight combined walks in those outings. The former Florida first-round pick still has talent, but his poor command continues to hold him back from reaching his potential.

Hurston Waldrep Effective Across Six Innings

Atlanta Braves pitching prospect Hurston Waldrep pitched well in a loss against Triple-A Indianapolis, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks to go with six strikeouts in six innings. Waldrep suffered his eighth loss of the season, which is tied for the most in Triple-A this season. The right-hander struggled in June, posting a 6.26 ERA, 1.52 WHIP, and a 17:14 K:BB in 23 innings. He has had consistent issues with his control, as his 13 percent walk rate is also the second highest among qualified starters at Triple-A this season. The former first-rounder does well to induce plenty of ground balls, but it's been a struggle overall in 2025. With the flurry of injuries in the Braves' rotation, Waldrep has had an opportunity to seize a rotation spot, but he can't find consistency at the moment.

Hurston Waldrep Has Mixed Outing on Tuesday

Atlanta Braves pitching prospect Hurston Waldrep allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits and three walks with four strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings as he took the loss against Triple-A Norfolk on Tuesday. Waldrep wasn't in the zone consistently enough, with 49 of his 94 total pitches thrown for strikes. The right-hander was able to generate 10 swing and misses on 34 swings in this outing. However, the lack of control continues to plague him. He's allowed three or more walks in eight of his 14 starts this season. The Braves could have called upon him to join the rotation recently, but instead opted for 20-year-old right-hander Didier Fuentes. Waldrep will likely continue to iron things out in the minor leagues for the time being.

Hurston Waldrep Punches Out Six on Sunday

Atlanta Braves right-handed pitching prospect Hurston Waldrep tossed six innings of one-run ball en route to picking up the victory over Triple-A Memphis on Sunday. In this outing, Waldrep struck out six batters and allowed seven hits and just one walk. This was a much-needed bounce-back outing for the former 24th overall pick as he allowed a season-high six runs in his last outing on June 8. Through 57 innings with Triple-A Gwinnett this season, Waldrep has had mixed results as he sits with a 5.84 ERA and a 170 WHIP. However, Waldrep has flashed decent strikeout upside, tallying 62 over this stretch. Last season, Waldrep made his MLB debut but only made two starts and served up 13 earned runs. If Waldrep can continue to find his footing at Triple-A, he could be in the mix to return to Atlanta in the second half.

Mixed Outing From Hurston Waldrep on Tuesday

Atlanta Braves pitching prospect Hurston Waldrep took the loss in an 8-4 loss against Triple-A Nashville on Tuesday. He allowed three runs on four hits and four walks while striking out four. It was a disappointing outing from Waldrep from a control standpoint, as it was his first start allowing four or more walks since April 25. Tabbed with a 70 grade splitter out of Florida, Waldrep threw the pitch only five times out of 87 pitches tonight. The 23-year-old has mostly struggled at Triple-A, with a 5.33 ERA, 1.64 WHIP, and a 56:30 K:BB. The injuries continue to mount in the Braves' rotation, but it still would seem unlikely that Waldrep is called upon anytime soon.

Hurston Waldrep Strikes Out Nine in Wednesday's Start

Atlanta Braves pitching prospect Hurston Waldrep allowed two runs on six hits and two walks with nine strikeouts over six innings Wednesday against Triple-A Louisville. He did not factor into the decision. Waldrep has strung together three quality outings in a row, with a 3.16 ERA and a 25:7 K:BB. The right-hander mowed down the Louisville lineup as he drew 20 swings and misses, which was tied for the lead in Triple-A Wednesday night. It doesn't seem likely that the 23-year-old will be up any time soon, but the Braves' rotation has already dealt with multiple injuries, making him a stash in fantasy leagues with 12 or more teams.

Hurston Waldrep Records Quality Start

Atlanta Braves pitching prospect Hurston Waldrep allowed two runs on three hits and three walks across six innings against Triple-A Charlotte on Wednesday. He struck out six. The 23-year-old has strung back-to-back effective outings, giving up only four runs and allowing five hits in 11 1/3 innings while striking out 16. The former Florida pitcher made his MLB debut last season and struggled with 13 runs allowed in only seven innings. The right-hander's season-long numbers in 2025 are still poor, with a 5.77 ERA and an elevated 14.7% walk rate. While the Braves have dealt with some injuries in the rotation, it appears Waldrep needs more refinement in the minor leagues before being brought back to the majors. He is currently ranked as the 2nd overall prospect in the Braves system on MLB.com.
