Robert Suarez News
The San Diego Padres and relief pitcher Robert Suarez agreed on a five-year deal worth $46 million on Thursday, according to sources. The contract includes an opt-out clause after three years. Suarez opted out of his original 2023 deal after a breakout rookie season in 2022 in which he had a 2.27 ERA (3.22 FIP), a 1.05 WHIP, one save and 61 strikeouts in 47 2/3 relief innings in the regular season. He was downright unhittable at times in the playoffs, although he did give up a couple home runs to the Philadelphia Phillies in the National League Championship Series. Suarez may not be in line for closing duties in San Diego, but he will certainly be in a high-leverage role, and his strikeout upside will make him valuable in fantasy.
San Diego Padres right-handed reliever Robert Suarez opted out of his deal with the team on Monday and will now become a popular free agent. Suarez declined his $5 million player option for the 2023 season. The 31-year-old played on a one-year, $5 million deal in 2022 after putting up impressive numbers in Japan in 2020 and 2021. He went 5-1 with a 2.27 ERA (3.22 FIP), 1.05 WHIP, 12 holds, one save and 61 strikeouts in 47 2/3 innings during the regular season and looked downright unhittable at times in the postseason before giving up the home run to Bryce Harper in the National League Championship Series that sent the Phillies to the World Series. Even if Suarez doesn't land a closing gig with another team in 2023, he could be useful for his strikeout ratio as a late-inning reliever.
San Diego Padres reliever Robert Suarez was called upon in the ninth inning to close out the team's 2-0 lead over the Diamondbacks, but was unable to record an out before getting the hook. The right-hander walked the first two batters he faced on a combined nine pitches before issuing a wild pitch, and then a hit-by-pitch before manager Bob Melvin removed him from the game. Craig Stammen couldn't stop the bleeding either by throwing a wild pitch of his own before giving up a walk-off three-run homer. Perhaps the stakes were a bit too high for Suarez's first big-league appearance, but better days will undoubtedly be ahead for the 31-year-old. He will have to earn back his managers trust before getting a high leverage role again, but newly acquired Taylor Rogers will handle closing duties moving forward regardless.
