Robert Suarez News
San Diego Padres closer Robert Suarez notched his sixth save of the season in Monday's 7-3 win over the Brewers. Suarez came in to pitch the bottom of the ninth inning up by four with two outs and runners on first and second. He allowed a single to load the bases but ended the game with a flyout. The 33-year-old has been excellent this season pitching at the end of games, converting all of his save opportunities with a 1.04 ERA, eight strikeouts, and four walks in 8 2/3 innings pitched. After much debate on how the Padres would handle saves this season, it seems pretty clear that Suarez is their top option.
San Diego Padres relief pitcher Robert Suarez notched his second save of the season in a 6-4 win over the San Francisco Giants. Suarez did allow a two-out homer to Michael Conforto, but got the job done nonetheless. It appears as though Suarez will get the bulk of the save opportunities for the Padres, at least early on, making him a solid source of saves. The 31-year-old should be rostered in all leagues where saves count.
San Diego Padres right-hander Robert Suarez picked up his first save of the 2024 season in Korea on Thursday in the team's 15-11 win over the division-rival Los Angeles Dodgers. Suarez picked up the save by recording four outs. The 33-year-old gave up one hit and struck out two batters to earn his first save of the year. The hit he allowed in the bottom of the eighth inning allowed the Dodgers to score a run, but he threw a perfect 1-2-3 ninth inning to lock it down. The Padres never officially named Suarez as their closer in spring training, but he was also the most likely candidate for save chances for the Friars despite the offseason addition of left-hander Yuki Matsui. The fact that Suarez got the team's first save opportunity of 2024 is evidence that he's the Padres' closer for now.

Robert Suarez has the inside track to the closer job in San Diego. Manager Mike Shildt mentioned Suarez and Yuki Matsui as the frontrunners to close out games. The 33-year-old Suarez had been in a high-leverage role behind Josh Hader, who signed with the Astros via free agency. Suarez features a high-octane fastball at 97.6 MPH and an above-average changeup. Matsui may need some time to acclimate to the MLB game coming over from Japan. The ATC projections are more bullish than others, with 18 saves and a 3.78 ERA. Suarez has an NFBC ADP of 212, so it all depends on how he fits your team build and what you need from the closer position. Beware that this could quickly become a timeshare with Matsui once he gains experience.
