Robert Suarez Stays Sharp on Friday, Emerging as Elite Short-Term Closer

Atlanta Braves right-handed reliever Robert Suarez converted his third save of the season on Friday at Truist Park in the 5-3 victory over the division-rival Philadelphia Phillies. Suarez wasn't perfect in the outing, walking one, giving up a hit, and striking a batter. The 35-year-old veteran is an elite short-term closing option for fantasy managers with right-hander Raisel Iglesias (shoulder) currently on the 15-day injured list. Since Iglesias went on the shelf, Suarez has converted back-to-back save chances for the Braves. He will be Atlanta's primary option for saves for however long Iglesias is sidelined, making him a prime waiver-wire pickup this week. In Yahoo leagues, Suarez is currently rostered in 70% of leagues. The hard-throwing Venezuelan reliever is a two-time All-Star and has plenty of experience closing out games, having recorded a whopping 76 saves with the San Diego Padres from 2024 to 2025. If you need saves and Suarez is available, he's a no-brainer pickup ASAP.

Robert Suarez Locks Down Ninth Inning for Atlanta, Flashing Elite Short-Term Value

Atlanta Braves relief pitcher Robert Suarez picked up his second save of the season on Wednesday, allowing one hit but only needing eight pitches to preserve his team's 8-6 win over Washington. Suarez is an outstanding short-term option if you need saves since he'll be filling in for the next few weeks while closer Raisel Iglesias (shoulder) is on the injured list. Suarez had 36 and 40 saves in the last two seasons for the Padres, so he's very comfortable in the role and should be a top option for as long as Iglesias is out. He would be the regular closer on many teams, but he was the team's high-leverage setup man before Iglesias' injury. This season, Suarez has given up just one run in 10 2/3 innings this year with a 1.36 FIP and 11 strikeouts.

Robert Suarez a Must-Add Candidate Following Major Injury in Bullpen

Atlanta Braves relief pitcher Robert Suarez is expected to take on closer duties following the injury to primary closer Raisel Iglesias. On Tuesday morning, the Braves shifted Iglesias to the 15-day injured list with right-shoulder inflammation, opening up the ninth inning for Suarez. Suarez joined the Braves in free agency but was the top closer in San Diego for each of the past two seasons. In 2024, Suarez tallied 36 saves while holding a 2.77 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP. In the following campaign, Suarez tallied a career-best 40 saves for the Padres while carrying a similar 2.97 ERA with a 0.90 WHIP. This season, Suarez has operated in a set-up role in the bullpen, tallying four holds while posting a near-perfect 0.93 ERA, pitching primarily in the eighth inning. While southpaw Dylan Lee should see occasional save opportunities against left-handed lineups, Suarez projects to see the bulk of the opportunities for the foreseeable future, making him a priority waiver wire candidate in all standard formats.

Robert Suarez No Longer a Reliable Option for Saves in Atlanta

Atlanta Braves right-handed pitcher Robert Suarez was one of the top closers in fantasy baseball while pitching for the San Diego Padres in 2025, posting a 2.97 ERA and 0.90 WHIP across 69 2/3 innings and racking up 40 saves, 75 strikeouts, and four wins. Suarez's stellar performance was enough to land him a three-year $45 million contract with Atlanta this past December. However, the Braves have long-time closer Raisel Iglesias in place in the ninth inning, and reportedly plan to use Suarez in a high-leverage setup role. Suarez profiles as the lead candidate to assume the closer role if Iglesias struggles or suffers an injury. Still, Suarez's fantasy value is greatly diminished for as long as he remains siloed to a setup role, at least in redraft formats. In dynasty leagues, Suarez could jump right back into the ninth-inning role in Atlanta in 2027, as Iglesias will hit free agency at the end of 2026.

Robert Suarez Agrees on Three-Year Deal With Braves

Free-agent closer Robert Suarez and the Atlanta Braves are in agreement on a three-year, $45 million deal on Thursday, sources tell Jeff Passan of ESPN. It's a curious landing spot for Suarez after the Braves already re-signed closer Raisel Iglesias to a one-year, $16 million deal this offseason. Reports suggest that Iglesias will remain the Braves' primary closer in 2026, which means that the 34-year-old Suarez will serve in a high-leverage setup role in his new digs. Suarez has been one of the most dominant closers in recent seasons with the San Diego Padres, posting a 2.87 ERA, 0.97 WHIP, 76 saves, 134 strikeouts, and 32 walks in 134 2/3 regular-season innings since the start of the 2024 campaign. He should continue to be useful for his strikeout rate and holds, but if Iglesias actually holds him off for closer duties, Suarez's overall fantasy value will take a hit in Atlanta.

Blue Jays Among the Teams Interested in Robert Suarez

Free-agent reliever Robert Suarez is drawing interest from the Toronto Blue Jays, Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Mets, and others, according to Robert Murray of FanSided.com. Suarez, one of the top relief arms on the open market this offseason, is projected to land a three-year, $48 million deal. Not only has Suarez been one of the most dominant closers in the game, but he's thrown at least 65 innings in each of the last two seasons while recording 76 saves in that span, including a league-best 40 saves for the San Diego Padres in 2025. After Jeff Hoffman blew the save in Game 7 of the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, Toronto is looking for upgrades to the back end of its bullpen. The Blue Jays were rumored to be interested in Emilio Pagan before he re-signed a two-year deal with the Reds. The Dodgers had well-documented relief issues last season, too, and could pluck a late-inning arm away from SD for a second straight season.

Robert Suarez Opts Out, Becomes Free Agent

San Diego Padres All-Star closer Robert Suarez, who led the National League with 40 saves in 2025, opted out of his contract on Monday and will now officially become a free agent, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post. Suarez had $16 million over two years to go on his deal with San Diego, but now he'll be one of the most sought-after relief arms on the market this winter. The 34-year-old right-hander also had a 2.87 ERA, 0.97 WHIP, 134 strikeouts and 32 walks in 134 2/3 innings out of the bullpen during the regular season in addition to his league-best 40 saves. If Suarez doesn't return to the Padres, the Friars could use flamethrower Mason Miller as their primary closer in 2026, if they don't transition him back to a starting role. Suarez, meanwhile, should be able to easily land a hefty multi-year deal, but his 2026 fantasy value will depend on where he lands.

Robert Suarez Secures 40th Save

San Diego Padres closer Robert Suarez collected his National League-leading 40th save in a 3-2 win over the Chicago White Sox on Sunday. The 34-year-old right-hander slammed the door on the White Sox with a 1-2-3 ninth inning and struck out two to lock up the first 40-save season of his career. It was a nice rebound for Suarez after he allowed a solo home run in a victory over Chicago on Saturday. Suarez, who's one save from tying Carlos Estevez for the major league lead, has recorded a sturdy 3.06 ERA with a .93 WHIP, 72 strikeouts, and 16 walks in 67 2/3 innings this season.

Robert Suarez Locks Up 33rd Save Monday

San Diego Padres relief pitcher Robert Suarez picked up his 33rd save of the season in Monday's 4-1 win over the Giants. Suarez entered the game to pitch the bottom of the ninth inning up by three and delivered a 1-2-3 effort with no strikeouts. The 34-year-old leads baseball in saves and has a 3.22 ERA, a 1.01 WHIP, and a 9.12 K/9 rate in 50 1/3 innings of work. Despite his excellent numbers, things were shaken up at the trade deadline when the Padres acquired another strong closer in Mason Miller. The two have each seen two save opportunities in the last 15 days, and Miller pitched a scoreless eighth inning Monday, striking out the side. While it is unusual, it seems as though the Padres may be able to produce enough fantasy value for both pitchers while sharing save opportunities.

Robert Suarez Records 32nd Save

San Diego Padres relief pitcher Robert Suarez earned his 32nd save of the season in Sunday's 7-3 victory over the Cardinals. The Padres held a 7-0 lead entering the ninth before Adrian Morejon gave up four singles and a walk to make the game a save situation. This is the second save that Suarez has gotten since Mason Miller was dealt to San Diego at the trade deadline, which is a great sign for his fantasy value moving forward. Many assumed that the 34-year-old would lose the closing job to the young flamethrower whom the Padres gave up their best prospect for, but that doesn't seem to be the case. He definitely has a much shorter leash now with Miller waiting in line behind him, but Suarez is still worth starting in fantasy.
