Spencer Schwellenbach Pain-Free This Offseason

Atlanta Braves right-hander Spencer Schwellenbach (elbow) is pain-free, according to president of baseball operations Alex Anthopoulos. Schwellenbach fractured his right elbow at the end of June and didn't pitch again for Atlanta in 2025. The 25-year-old was cleared to resume throwing in late September, though, which means that barring a setback, he should be an option for the Braves' starting rotation to begin the 2026 season. Schwellenback should be a lock for the rotation if he's healthy after going 15-11 with a nice 3.23 ERA (3.27 FIP), 1.01 WHIP, and 235:41 K:BB in 234 1/3 innings over 38 starts in his first two big-league seasons the last two years. There's a lot to like about Schwellenbach's fantasy profile, but there's also plenty of risk for a player coming off a major injury who made the leap straight from Double-A to the big leagues when he debuted in 2024.

Spencer Schwellenbach Likely Done for the Year

Atlanta Braves starting pitcher Spencer Schwellenbach (elbow) is on the 60-day injured list with a fracture in his pitching elbow. Braves manager Brian Snitker said Monday that Schwellenbach has not yet to resume throwing and appears unlikely to pitch again in 2025. There is no official timeline for his return, and he will need an extended build-up program to get back on the mound this year for the Braves. With Atlanta out of the playoff picture, the Braves do not need to push Schwellenbach back this year. If his season is over, Schwellenbach will finish the year with a (7-4) record, 3.09 ERA, 0.97 WHIP, while averaging close to a strikeout per inning.

Spencer Schwellenbach Transferred to 60-Day IL

Atlanta Braves starting pitcher Spencer Schwellenbach (elbow) has been transferred from the 15-day IL to the 60-day IL, according to the team. The move was made to open a spot on the 40-man roster for reliever Jesse Chavez. The announcement comes as no surprise, as Schwellenbach has been diagnosed with a fracture in his pitching elbow and will not resume throwing until the fracture heals. Until that point, there will not be a firm timetable for his return, but this injury is now guaranteed to keep him out until late this season at the earliest. It's a rough blow for Atlanta, as Schwellenbach was in the midst of an excellent season. In 110 2/3 IP (17 starts), he was 7-4 with a 3.09 ERA, 0.97 WHIP, and 108 strikeouts.

Spencer Schwellenbach Going on Injured List With Fractured Elbow

The Atlanta Braves will place right-hander Spencer Schwellenbach (elbow) on the injured list with a fractured right elbow, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution's Gabe Burns. It's yet another devastating blow to a Braves team that just hasn't been able to catch a break in 2025. There's no specific timetable given for Schwellenbach, but based on the severity of the injury alone, it wouldn't be a surprise if he misses the rest of the 2025 season. It's especially bad news for Atlanta's starting rotation with lefty Chris Sale (rib cage), last year's National League Cy Young winner, on the 60-day IL as well. Schwellenbach was in the midst of a breakout season in 2025 in his second year, going 7-4 with a 3.09 ERA and 0.97 WHIP with 108 K's and only 18 walks in 110 2/3 innings over 17 starts. Owen Murphy or Didier Fuentes could take Schwellenbach's rotation spot. UPDATE: Schwellenbach thinks his recent increased velocity might have caused the fracture in his elbow. He's hoping to be back later in the season, but until the fracture heals, he won't resume throwing and there won't be a real timetable for a potential return.

Spencer Schwellenbach Dominant in Victory

Atlanta Braves right-hander Spencer Schwellenbach dominated the Philadelphia Phillies in a 6-1 victory on Saturday. Schwellenbach (7-4) collected his seventh win after striking out a career-high 12 hitters while holding the Braves to one run on three hits and a walk. The 24-year-old has recorded double-digit strikeouts four times this season and amassed 13 quality starts in 17 tries. Boasting a 3.09 ERA with a 0.97 WHIP and 108:18 K:BB over a league-high 110 2/3 innings, Schwellenbach has emerged as a must-start for fantasy managers. He's scheduled to take on the Baltimore Orioles on July 4.

Spencer Schwellenbach Strikes Out Nine in Complete Game

Atlanta Braves starting pitcher Spencer Schwellenbach threw the first complete game of his career and earned the win in a 6-2 win against the Brewers on Wednesday. He allowed two runs on five hits while striking out nine over the nine frames. He has only pitched less than six innings in a start two times all season, and four of his past six outings have been at least seven innings. Not only has he been extremely efficient, but he also has excelled at missing bats, with two 11-strikeout performances in that same span. The youngster is giving Chris Sale a run for his money as the best pitcher on that staff, and he'll carry a 3.11 ERA and 1.00 WHIP into his next start against the Mets.

Spencer Schwellenbach Punches Out 11 in Win Over Red Sox

Atlanta Braves right-hander Spencer Schwellenbach (4-4) picked up his fourth win of the season in a 5-0 decision against the Boston Red Sox on Saturday. Schwellenbach celebrated his 25th birthday by striking out 11 over 6 1/3 innings, issuing no walks, and allowing just five hits (all singles). It was the second straight start with double-digit strikeouts for Schwellenbach, who fanned 11 Padres in a hard-luck defeat last Sunday. Schwellenbach has stormed out of the gates this season with a 3.13 ERA and 71 strikeouts against 12 walks across 74 2/3 frames. The budding star will go on the road to take on the San Francisco Giants next Friday.

Spencer Schwellenbach Notches Quality Start Vs. Cardinals

Atlanta Braves right-hander Spencer Schwellenbach turned in a quality start in a 7-6 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday. Schwellenbach allowed three runs (two earned) on eight hits over seven innings while striking out five and walking none but had to settle for a no-decision. The 24-year-old right-hander picked up nine swinging strikes in the outing while showing his typical excellent command with no walks issued. Schwellenbach now has a 1-1 record, 2.56 ERA, 0.92 WHIP, and 27 strikeouts over 31 2/3 innings of work this season. His next start will come against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday.

Spencer Schwellenbach Strikes Out 10 Across Eight Shutout Innings

Atlanta Braves starting pitcher Spencer Schwellenbach tossed eight shutout innings en route to leading Atlanta to their first victory of the campaign over the Miami Marlins. In this start, Schwellenbach allowed just two hits, with no walks, and struck out 10 batters. Schwellenbach was in complete control of the Miami offense. His first hit allowed came in the sixth inning to Liam Hicks. Then in the seventh, Griffin Connie would reach on a line drive to left field. In his first start of the season, Schwellenbach tossed six shutout innings of one-hit ball. After posting an impressive 2.73 ERA, 0.97 WHIP with an 18:86 BB:K across his final 79 innings of his rookie season, Schwellenbach appears to have reached a new level in his sophomore campaign. Fantasy managers should continue to view the Nebraska product as a must-start option in all formats. He is scheduled to face the Pittsburgh Pirates in his next start.

Spencer Schwellenbach Punches Out 10

Atlanta Braves starting pitcher Spencer Schwellenbach looked untouchable on Wednesday against the Yankees, striking out 10 over six scoreless innings. He'll be heading into the regular season on a high note as he hopes to continue the success he saw as a rookie. In 2024, he posted a 3.35 ERA and 1.04 WHIP with 127 strikeouts across 123 innings. He excelled at fooling hitters, as evidenced by his 34.2% chase rate (96th percentile) and 4.6% walk rate (95th percentile). All signs are pointing towards a breakout season for the 24-year-old, who has the talent to be a top-20 starting pitcher for fantasy this year.
