Didier Fuentes Optioned to Triple-A

The Atlanta Braves have optioned right-handed pitching prospect Didier Fuentes to Triple-A Gwinnett. This is the corresponding move to make space on the 26-man roster after Atlanta selected the contract of left-handed starter Martin Perez. Fuentes was effective in his lone relief pitching appearance during the Braves' opening series. He tossed four innings out of the bullpen, allowing just one run on two hits and one walk. He also struck out four batters. At first, the decision to option Fuentes after such a strong outing may come as a surprise. However, it's consistent with the Braves' plan for building up Fuentes into a major league starter. It was previously reported that Fuentes would open the year in the majors as a reliever before returning to Triple-A to be stretched out as a starter. He'll presumably join Gwinnett's rotation, and we wouldn't be surprised to see him back in the majors (as a starter) after just a few Triple-A outings.

Didier Fuentes Will Eventually Stretch Out as a Starter in Triple-A

Atlanta Braves right-handed pitching prospect Didier Fuentes has made the Opening Day roster as a reliever, but Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports that the 20-year-old will eventually return to the minors to be stretched out. According to Bowman, the Braves want Fuentes "to spend the first couple weeks as a long reliever for Atlanta and then go to Triple-A Gwinnett to work as a starter." That's some deflating news for Braves fans and fantasy managers, as Fuentes is an appealing prospect who delivered nine scoreless innings this spring. The former international free agent out of Colombia has made just one professional relief appearance in the minors since 2023, so it's somewhat perplexing that the Braves are going to temporarily convert him to a reliever, just to send him back to Triple-A and stretch him out. Regardless, this news delays any potential fantasy breakout for Fuentes. Fantasy managers will have to exercise a little more patience.

Is Didier Fuentes Worth Stashing Through the Early Portion of 2026?

Atlanta Braves pitching prospect Didier Fuentes has made the team's Opening Day roster as a member of the bullpen. The 21-year-old was dominant in Grapefruit League action, recording nine shutout innings with 17 strikeouts, zero walks, and zero hits. While Fuentes will open the year in the bullpen, all 13 of his minor league appearances in 2025 came as a starter. The Braves are already thin in the rotation as they deal with injuries to key starters such as Spencer Schwellenbach (elbow) and Hurston Waldrep (elbow). If Atlanta faces further injury or underperformance from any of its current starters, it would not be a surprise to see Fuentes stretched out for a return to the rotation. Depending on league size and format, fantasy managers may want to consider stashing Fuentes through the early portion of the season in case he earns a quick promotion from middle relief to the starting rotation.

Didier Fuentes Makes Braves' Opening Day Bullpen

Atlanta Braves right-handed pitching prospect Didier Fuentes has made the team's Opening Day roster at 20 years old and will be part of their bullpen, according to Jeff Passan of ESPN. Fuentes earned the spot by throwing nine shutout innings with no hits allowed, no walks, and 17 strikeouts in three outings in the Grapefruit League. The Colombian hurler will open in Atlanta's bullpen, but don't be surprised if he eventually makes starts for the Braves in 2026, given all the injuries to the likes of Spencer Schwellenbach (elbow), Hurston Waldrep (elbow), AJ Smith-Shawver (elbow), and Joey Wentz (knee). Per MLB Pipeline, Fuentes is the team's No. 3 prospect. He struggled in his big-league debut in 2025, allowing 20 earned runs on 23 hits (six homers) while walking six and striking out 12 in 13 innings over four starts. Fuentes has a high-90s fastball with deception, giving him plenty of swing-and-miss potential. His secondary pitches are a work in progress. Fuentes is an arm to keep an eye on in mixed leagues going into the 2026 season.

Didier Fuentes Strikes Out Four in Spring Debut

Atlanta Braves right-handed pitching prospect Didier Fuentes tossed two innings of relief in his spring training debut on Saturday against the Baltimore Orioles. Fuentes logged two innings and did not allow a hit or a walk, and struck out four hitters. The 20-year-old right-hander made his MLB debut last summer but was unable to find much success, posting a hefty 13.85 ERA with a 2.23 WHIP over his first 13 innings in Atlanta. During this stint, he struck out 12 hitters and allowed walks at an 8.7% rate. In the minor leagues, he logged 57 innings across stints at High-A, Double-A, and Triple-A, where he posted a 4.58 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, with a 71:16 K:BB. While Futenes is likely ticketed for Triple-A to begin the season, an early promotion is likely possible given that Atlanta is already without starting pitcher Spencer Schwellenbach (elbow).

Didier Fuentes Primed for Rebound in Second MLB Stint?

Atlanta Braves right-handed pitching prospect Didier Fuentes made his MLB debut last summer but struggled during his first taste. Through 13 innings (four starts) in Atlanta, Fuentes posted a high 13.85 ERA with a 2.23 WHIP. The 20-year-old looked quite overmatched, striking out only 12 hitters and posting a high 8.7% walk rate. However, Fuentes showed solid upside as he progressed through the system and could enjoy a strong bounce-back during his first MLB stint in 2026. Fuentes began the 2025 season in High-A but progressed to Triple-A Gwinnett. He would spend the majority of his season at Triple-A, where he logged 22 1/3 innings to the tune of a 3.63 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, and a 29:4 K:BB. His season would be cut short by right shoulder inflammation in August. Managers should monitor his development in spring training, as he could be in the mix for an early call-up if Atlanta needs an injury replacement.

Didier Fuentes Allows Eight Runs on Tuesday

Atlanta Braves right-handed prospect pitcher Didier Fuentes stumbled during his start on Tuesday evening against the Athletics. In this contest, Fuentes logged just one inning of work and allowed five hits and eight earned runs. He served up two walks and struck out two batters. He allowed three long balls, including a two-run shot by outfielder Brent Rooker. In his previous outing, he enjoyed his best start at the MLB level, striking out six batters across 3 2/3 innings of two-run ball. Through 13 total innings in the big leagues, Fuentes carries a hefty 13.85 ERA with a 2.23 WHIP. He opened the season at High-A but needed only 13 innings there, 21 2/3 innings with Double-A, and just one start at Triple-A to earn the call to the majors. Given his troubles in Atlanta, he could be optioned back to the minor leagues in the coming weeks.

Didier Fuentes to Remain in Braves' Rotation

The Atlanta Braves had to place ace Chris Sale (rib cage) on the 15-day injured list with a fractured left rib cage on Saturday. Sale's absence will leave a massive void in their rotation. It'll also lead to more opportunities for right-handed prospect Didier Fuentes, who will stay in their starting five with Sale out. "We'll go with the five guys we have," manager Brian Snitker told Gabe Burns of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. MLB Pipeline's 10th-ranked Braves prospect, Fuentes made his major league debut Friday and struggled in a 6-2 loss to the Miami Marlins. Fuentes logged five innings of four-run ball with six hits allowed and 3:1 K:BB. With the Braves set to take on the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies next week, Fuentes should be avoided from a fantasy perspective in his next start.
