Baez profiles as an explosive athlete who generates a lot of power and makes some web gems in the field. In the season in Single-A and High-A, he has slashed .239/.332/.373 with 11 home runs, 50 runs scored, 44 RBI, and seven stolen bases. Although he is a bit of a project for the Cardinals at this time, he has the potential to be an exciting ballplayer if he continues to develop.

Before the trade, Baez was ranked by MLB Pipeline as New York's No. 8 prospect. The 20-year-old Dominican shortstop played 69 games this year at High-A Brooklyn and hit .244 (62-for-254) with 10 home runs, 42 RBI, 43 runs scored and seven stolen bases in 293 plate appearances. The 5-foot-10, 180-pounder has some impressive power upside but has been known to chase at the plate. Baez isn't expected to be a speed guy as he ages. Right now, he's more of a middle infielder, but he has the arm strength to eventually transition to third base. A promotion to Double-A by the end of the year in the Cardinals' organization is a possibility.
