Free-agent first baseman Jesus Aguilar signed an undisclosed one-year deal with the Seibu Lions of Nippon Professional Baseball on Wednesday. After 10 years in the big leagues, the 33-year-old veteran Venezuelan right-handed slugger will take his talents to Japan. He was released by the Oakland Athletics in June after hitting a weak .221/.281/.385 with five home runs, two doubles, nine RBI and eight runs scored in 36 games played. Aguilar later played with Triple-A Gwinnett in the Atlanta Braves organization but never made it to the big-league level. The height of his slugging powers came in 2018 when he made the All-Star team for the only time in his career by batting .274 (135-for-492) with a career-high 35 home runs and 108 RBI for the Milwaukee Brewers.
The Atlanta Braves signed free-agent first baseman Jesus Aguilar to a minor-league deal on Tuesday. The Oakland Athletics released Aguilar in early June after he hit just .221 (23-for-104) with two doubles, five home runs, nine RBI and eight runs scored in 36 games for them to begin the year. The 32-year-old right-handed slugger will most likely report to Triple-A Gwinnett, where he will serve as organizational first-base depth. As long as Matt Olson remains healthy at the big-league level, the Braves probably won't have much use for Aguilar. He was an All-Star back in 2018 with the Milwaukee Brewers when he hit 35 home runs and drove in 108 runs, but he hasn't come close to producing similar numbers since.
The Oakland Athletics designated first baseman/designated hitter Jesus Aguilar for assignment on Monday, according to sources. Aguilar gets the boot off the team's 40-man roster after hitting .221 (23-for-104) with two doubles, five home runs and nine RBI in 36 games played. He had walked eight times and struck out 31 times in 115 trips to the plate. The 32-year-old veteran slugger could latch on elsewhere, though, as an option against left-handed pitching. Against southpaws so far in 2023, Aguilar hit .280 with four home runs and eight RBI in 50 at-bats. He can continue to go ignored in mixed fantasy leagues, though.

Miami Marlins first baseman Jesus Aguilar had a strong comeback season in the abbreviated 2020 season and should be in line for similar success in 2021. In the shortened season, Aguilar slashed .277/.352/.457 with eight home runs, 34 RBI, and 31 runs scored. The only issue with projecting Aguilar's 2021 is the amount of playing time he will receive. He and Garrett Cooper split time between first base and designated hitter in 2020. If the designated hitter is not part of National League baseball in 2021, Cooper and Aguilar would likely be forced to split time, severely limiting the upside and the counting stats of both hitters. Aguilar is a solid lineup filler who should be rostered in all formats if the National League continues to utilize the DH in the 2021 season.
