Kyle Leahy Earns Spot in St. Louis' Starting Rotation

St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Kyle Leahy will open the 2026 regular season in the team's starting rotation, according to Daniel Guerrero of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He'll be joined in the rotation by Matthew Liberatore, Michael McGreevy, Dustin May, and Andre Pallante. Leahy's first start of the year won't be an easy matchup for fantasy purposes, as he'll face the New York Mets at home on March 30. The 28-year-old former 17th-rounder in 2018 out of Colorado Mesa University has made just one career start (last year) in 98 career appearances since breaking into the league in 2023 in St. Louis, so fantasy managers should expect workload restrictions after he threw 88 innings in the majors in 2025. Leahy had a lackluster 4.58 ERA in Grapefruit League play in 17 2/3 innings pitched, but he did strike out 20 and walk five. The last time Leahy was a full-time starter was in 2022 at Double-A, when he held a 5.23 ERA.

Kyle Leahy to be Used in Piggyback Role?

St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Kyle Leahy could be used in a piggyback role with starting pitchers Andre Pallante and/or Matthew Liberatore down the stretch of the season, according to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Goold writes that the team is considering building Leahy up as a starter going into 2026. In 62 2/3 innings (45 games) this season for St. Louis, Leahy is 2-1 with a 2.59 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, and 55 strikeouts. All 81 of his career big-league appearances have come in relief, but he made 26 starts in the minors as recently as 2022. If Leahy is indeed utilized in a consistent multiple-inning role in the middle of games the rest of the way, he could be an interesting waiver-wire target for fantasy managers in need of wins.

Kyle Leahy Could be an Option for Cardinals Rotation

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Derrick Goold writes that St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Kyle Leahy has generated some intrigue as an option for the big-league starting rotation. Leahy has never made a start in the big leagues, as all 76 of his appearances since his debut in 2023 have come out of the bullpen. However, the 28-year-old has some starting experience in the minors and is no stranger to going multiple innings in a relief role. Leahy's last outing came in Colorado against the Rockies on Tuesday, when he struck out seven in 3 2/3 innings pitched. It doesn't appear imminent that Leahy will move into St. Louis' rotation, but he could before long, especially if the Cards trade away a current starter at the July 31 deadline. In his 40 outings this year, Leahy has posted a career-best 2.95 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 48:19 K:BB in 55 innings.

Kyle Leahy Likely To See More Late-Inning Opportunities

With St. Louis Cardinals relievers Chris Roycroft and Ryan Hernandez off to shaky starts in 2025, it appears that right-hander Kyle Leahy is going to be given more opportunities in the late innings out of the bullpen. Leahy started the eighth inning in a scoreless tie in Wednesday's extra-inning loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates, the highest-leverage situation Leahy has appeared in this season. He pitched around a walk and struck out two. The 27-year-old has quietly been one of St. Louis' best pitchers early on, appearing in six games while allowing one earned run over 7 2/3 frames. He hasn't allowed a hit since March 27 while walking three and striking out 10. Leahy is effective against lefties and righties thanks to a six-pitch arsenal, and he's more valuable to the Cardinals because of his ability to pitch multiple innings. Leahy might be worth a look in fantasy leagues that count holds.
