MacKenzie Gore Throws on Friday, Up in the Air for Next Start

Texas Rangers left-hander MacKenzie Gore (lat) will be re-evaluated after playing catch on Friday, according to MLB.com. No official announcement has been made about his next scheduled start. Gore is currently considered day-to-day after leaving his last start on Monday against the Colorado Rockies with left-lat tightness. However, an MRI exam came back negative, and reports have suggested that he could make his next turn in Texas' rotation for Sunday's series finale against the division-rival Los Angeles Angels in Anaheim. The 27-year-old southpaw was a first-time All-Star in 2025 with the Washington Nationals, but he has been hard to trust in fantasy so far in his first year with the Rangers, as he's gone 3-4 with a career-high 4.78 ERA (3.97 FIP) and 1.33 WHIP with 55 strikeouts and 24 walks in 49 innings pitched across 10 starts. Typically, we wouldn't recommend a struggling pitcher coming off an injury in fantasy, but if he makes his start on Sunday, he'll be hard to ignore in starting lineups against an Angels team with a .693 OPS.

MacKenzie Gore "Trending" Toward Making his Next Start on Sunday

Imaging on Texas Rangers left-hander MacKenzie Gore's lat came back clean, and he's "trending" toward making his next scheduled start on Sunday in Anaheim against the division-rival Los Angeles Angels, according to Shawn McFarland of The Dallas Morning News. The 27-year-old southpaw was pulled after just one inning in his latest start on Monday versus the Colorado Rockies when his lat tightened up on him, but it looks like he has avoided anything serious, and he shouldn't have to miss a turn through Texas' starting rotation. The bad news is that Gore has had a rough go of it in his first year with the Rangers, giving up two more earned runs on Monday. He is sporting a 3-4 record with a 4.78 ERA (3.99 FIP), 1.33 WHIP, and 55:24 K:BB in 49 innings across his first 10 starts in 2026. Gore will be a riskier fantasy option this weekend in Anaheim, but it will be hard to ignore him in starting lineups because of the matchup. The Angels were nearly no-hit by A's starter J.T. Ginn a few days ago, and they currently rank 25th in baseball with a .686 OPS. The Angels also lead the league with 476 strikeouts.

MacKenzie Gore Leaves Monday's Start With Lat Tightness

Texas Rangers left-hander MacKenzie Gore (lat) left his start on Monday early against the Colorado Rockies with left-lat tightness, according to Shawn McFarland of The Dallas Morning News. Before leaving due to injury, Gore only went one inning, allowing two earned runs on three hits while walking two and striking out two at hitter-friendly Coors Field in Denver. Until we know more about the lefty's condition, fantasy managers should consider him day-to-day. The 27-year-old former third overall pick by the San Diego Padres in 2017 has struggled so far in his first year in Texas, as he entered his start on Monday against Colorado with a 3-3 record, 4.50 ERA (3.95 FIP), and 1.25 WHIP with 53 strikeouts and 22 starts in 48 innings over his nine starts. It has especially been disappointing after he was a first-time All-Star in 2025 in his final campaign with the Washington Nationals, despite going 5-15. He struck out a career-high 185 hitters in 159 2/3 innings across his 30 starts. Gore is rostered in 84% of Yahoo leagues and needs to be held until we know more about the severity of his injury.

MacKenzie Gore Looks Sharp in Rangers Debut

Texas Rangers starting pitcher MacKenzie Gore picked up the win in his first start of 2026 on Sunday, pitching 5 1/3 innings and recording seven strikeouts while allowing two hits, three walks, and two earned runs in his team's 8-3 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies. Across 159 2/3 innings (30 starts) for the Washington Nationals in 2025, Gore recorded a 5-15 record with a 4.17 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, and 185 strikeouts. Generating swing-and-miss has never been an issue for the 27-year-old, as he owns a 25.6% strikeout rate for his career and posted a 27.2% strikeout rate in 2025. However, Gore has never posted a WHIP below 1.35 thanks to his 9.7% career walk rate and .323 career opponent batting average on balls in play. Allowing three walks in 5 1/3 innings on Sunday won't allay concerns about Gore's command, but it's still encouraging to see him pitch well against a tough Phillies lineup. Gore has the stuff to be a breakout candidate in 2026 if he can put it all together.

MacKenzie Gore Thows Bullpen Session on Wednesday

Texas Rangers starting pitcher MacKenzie Gore (ankle) threw a bullpen session on Wednesday, according to video from Kennedi Landry of MLB.com. Gore was acquired from the Nationals in a blockbuster trade last month. The trade wouldn't have happened if he hadn't passed a physical, but it's still worth noting that he is coming back from shoulder and ankle injuries that sidelined him for all of September last year. Thus, Rangers fans and fantasy managers should be encouraged that he threw a bullpen, seemingly without any limitations. The 26-year-old has posted an ERA of 3.90 or higher in each of his four MLB seasons, but he still fetched a significant prospect haul in the trade because of his underlying metrics, pitch characteristics, and team control. There's a lot to like about his 10.43 K/9 and 3.61 BB/9 from last year, and his 1.13 HR/9 should settle down now that he's in the Rangers' pitcher-friendly environment. As it stands, Gore ranks as the #59 starting pitcher in RotoBaller's latest fantasy baseball rankings for 2026.

Rangers Acquire MacKenzie Gore From the Nationals

The Texas Rangers are acquiring left-hander MacKenzie Gore from the Washington Nationals on Thursday, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post. According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the Nationals will receive third baseman Gavin Fien, the 12th overall pick last year out of high school. Gore was a first-time All-Star in 2025 in his third year in D.C., going 5-15 with a 4.17 ERA (3.74 FIP), 1.35 WHIP, career-high 185 strikeouts, and 64 walks in 30 starts over 159 2/3 innings. The 26-year-old southpaw looked like he was on his way to becoming a high-end fantasy starter in the first half, with a 3.02 ERA and 11.3 K/9 in his first 19 outings. But then everything fell apart, and Gore had a rough 6.75 ERA in his final 11 starts while also missing some time with ankle and shoulder injuries. Gore's strikeout upside gives him a decent floor, and the potential for more wins in Texas should raise his ADP going into the 2026 season.

Yankees Pursuing Trade for MacKenzie Gore

The New York Yankees have begun to pursue a trade for Washington Nationals ace MacKenzie Gore. After falling short in the bid to acquire Marlins right-hander Edward Cabrera, Jon Heyman of The New York Post reports that the Yankees have shifted their focus to other top trade targets such as Gore and Brewers right-hander Freddy Peralta. Gore has flashed immense upside at times, but has yet to sustain it over a full campaign. Last season, the southpaw enjoyed a strong first half, posting a 3.02 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, and a 138:35 K:BB through his first 110 1/3 innings. However, over his last 49 1/3 innings, Gore took a massive step back, posting a hefty 6.75 ERA with a 1.70 WHIP. Gore is a name to closely monitor as he could benefit from a change of scenery. He would also be in line to surpass his previous career-high of 10 wins, pitching for a competing Yankees team.

Orioles Discussing Trade for MacKenzie Gore

The Baltimore Orioles have had steady communication about Washington Nationals left-hander MacKenzie Gore, sources told Jon Morosi of MLB Network. There is no indication that a deal is close, though. The Orioles have yet to complete a trade with the Nationals since the franchise moved to D.C. ESPN's Buster Olney reportedly recently that there is a perception among several front offices that the Nationals will definitely trade Gore this offseason. The 26-year-old southpaw was heading for a breakout 2025 campaign in the first half before fading in the second half while missing time due to ankle and shoulder injuries. He finished with a 5-15 record, 4.17 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, 185 strikeouts, and 64 walks in 30 starts (159 2/3 innings) in his fourth MLB season. It would be quite a splash for the O's, who just signed superstar first baseman Pete Alonso to a five-year, $155 million deal.

Will the Nationals Trade MacKenzie Gore?

There is a perception in a couple of front offices that the Washington Nationals plan to trade left-hander MacKenzie Gore, according to Buster Olney of ESPN. The 26-year-old got off to a hot start in 2025, posting a 3.02 ERA with 138 strikeouts in 110 1/3 innings before the All-Star break. After the break, however, he struggled mightily to a 6.75 ERA and a 1.70 WHIP in 49 1/3 innings. Gore has always had the stuff to be an ace, but his inability to close out the year strong collides with his lack of control to produce a very risky pitcher to invest in on draft day. Gore is best for leagues with daily lineups, so you can pick and choose which matchups to play him.

Nationals Expected to Trade MacKenzie Gore?

Bob Nightengale of USA Today Sports writes that the Washington Nationals are expected to use left-hander MacKenzie Gore as "trade bait to kick-start their new era." Gore is a talented young starter just entering his prime in the big leagues, but the Nationals now have an entirely new front office, a new coaching staff, and new ideas for their future. The 26-year-old dealt with some ankle issues this year and finished the season on the injured list, but he should be fully healthy in time for spring training in 2026. The former first-rounder was a first-time All-Star for the Nats in 2025 in his third year with the team despite going 5-15 in 30 starts (159 2/3 innings). Gore posted a 4.17 ERA and 1.35 WHIP with a career-high 185 strikeouts and 64 walks. He had a career-best 27.2% strikeout rate, but Gore must find better control if he's going to take the next step as a potential fantasy ace.
