Matt Chapman Expected to Have Season-Ending Surgery Next Week

San Francisco Giants third baseman Matt Chapman (hernia) is flying to Philadelphia to see a specialist on Sunday and expects to have season-ending surgery next Tuesday, according to Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports. Chapman is dealing with a hernia that he had been playing through for most of the season. The 33-year-old veteran can now be dropped in all redraft fantasy leagues, if he wasn't already. The injury helps explain Chapman's disappointing third season in the Bay Area, as he'll finish the 2026 campaign (his 10th in the big leagues) with a .235/.324/.368 slash line, a career-low .692 OPS, a career-low seven home runs, 42 RBI, and 35 runs scored in 84 games across 352 plate appearances. With Casey Schmitt also done for the year due to a knee injury, Christian Koss now has a runway for the rest of the season to serve as the Giants' starting third baseman. Chapman could bounce back in 2027 with better health, but at this point in his career, he won't necessarily be a lock to return to the 20-homer mark, especially at pitcher-friendly Oracle Park.

Matt Chapman May Not Return in 2026?

An MRI confirmed that San Francisco Giants third baseman Matt Chapman (abdomen) is dealing with a core muscle injury, per Justice delos Santos of The San Jose Mercury News. Delos Santos reports that Chapman is set to see a specialist next week for a "full evaluation." If Chapman requires core muscle surgery, he could be ruled out for the remainder of the 2026 season. The 33-year-old has not played since late June due to what was first deemed to be an abdominal strain. Given that San Francisco is not in playoff contention and Chapman is under contract through 2030, the team has little incentive to push him back out onto the field. Across 352 plate appearances on the year, Chapman has hit .235/.324/.368 with seven home runs, 42 RBI, and 35 runs scored. Given his uncertain health status, redraft managers are likely safe to move on from Chapman.

Matt Chapman Not Ready to Return From the Injured List

San Francisco Giants third baseman Matt Chapman (abdomen), who was supposed to be ready by the All-Star break in mid-July and then again this weekend in San Diego against the division-rival Padres, is still not ready, according to Evan Webeck of The California Post. Chapman was scheduled to meet with team doctors on Sunday to reassess his situation. He has been able to swing the bat and play defense, but he's still having trouble running the bases. The 33-year-old veteran has not played since suffering an abdominal strain on June 30 against the Arizona Diamondbacks, and there is no timetable for his return. Because of his injury, Chapman doesn't figure to be traded before Monday's Aug. 3 deadline. Before his injury, the former All-Star was a disappointment for fantasy managers offensively, slashing .235/.324/.368 with a .692 OPS, seven home runs, 42 RBI, and 35 runs scored across his 307 at-bats in his third year in the Bay Area. Chapman should return this season, but his activation from the IL is no longer imminent. UPDATE: Per the San Francisco Chronicle's Susan Slusser, Chapman will have another MRI exam on Monday.

Matt Chapman Expected to Return This Weekend

San Francisco Giants manager Tony Vitello said that third baseman Matt Chapman (abdomen) will return from the 10-day injured list at some point this weekend during the series against the division-rival San Diego Padres, which starts on Thursday, according to Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports. Despite missing a month with an abdominal strain, the 33-year-old veteran third baseman will return just before the Aug. 3 trade deadline without going on a minor-league rehab assignment. The former first-rounder will return to a mediocre .235/.324/.368 slash line with a .692 OPS, seven home runs, 42 RBI, and 35 runs scored in his 307 at-bats before going on the shelf. Chapman's return to close out July is good timing with the Giants losing infielder/outfielder Casey Schmitt to a likely season-ending torn meniscus in his knee this week. He'll take over starting third base duties at some point this weekend, and it remains to be seen if he'll be involved in a deadline deal as the Giants look to sell for the future.

Matt Chapman Unlikely to Return During Homestand

San Francisco Giants third baseman Matt Chapman (abdomen) is unlikely to return during the current homestand. On Sunday, manager Tony Vitello said Chapman is still without a target date to return from the 10-day Injured List. Earlier in the week, Vitello said there was a chance that Chapman would return during this homestand that ends on Wednesday. It doesn't sound like that is going to happen with Chapman needing additional time to recover from his abdominal strain. The veteran slugger has been out since the beginning of July due to the injury. Casey Schmitt figures to continue seeing significant playing time at the hot corner while Chapman remains sidelined.

Matt Chapman Could Return on the Next Homestand

San Francisco Giants third baseman Matt Chapman (abdomen) went through his most strenuous day yet while rehabbing an abdominal strain on Monday, according to Evan Webeck of The California Post. Manager Tony Vitello said "it went well" and that Chapman is in "really good spirits." The skipper also said that it's "reasonable to think" that Chapman could return from the 10-day injured list on the team's next homestand, but he wouldn't make any promises. San Francisco will return home this Friday, July 24, and will stay in the Bay Area until Wednesday, July 29. It sounds as though the Giants won't ask the 33-year-old veteran to go on a minor-league rehab assignment before potentially returning this weekend. The former 25th overall pick in 2014 by the Athletics out of Cal State Fullerton has left a lot to be desired from his fantasy managers in 2026, slashing .235/.324/.368 with a career-low .692 OPS, seven home runs, 42 RBI, and 35 runs scored through his first 84 games and 352 plate appearances in his third year with the Gigantes and 10th in the majors.

Matt Chapman Cleared to Swing, Won't Return on Road Trip

San Francisco Giants third baseman Matt Chapman (abdomen) was cleared to resume swinging on Friday, but he won't return from the 10-day injured list during the team's current road trip, according to Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports. Chapman could return at the start of the next homestand, though, which runs from Friday, July 24, though Wedneday, July 29. It hasn't helped the 33-year-old veteran's trade value that he's been sidelined since early July, but he's taking the first step towards a return. It's unclear if Chapman will require a minor-league assignment before returning to the Giants' lineup later this month. Like most of the Giants hitters, Chapman has left a lot to be desired through the first half of the 2026 season, slashing .235/.324/.368 with a career-low .692 OPS, only seven home runs, 42 RBI, and 35 runs scored across 84 games and 352 plate appearances. He's in danger of failing to reach the 20-homer mark for the third straight season, but perhaps a change of scenery would do him some good. Chapman is only rostered in 63% of Yahoo leagues after his abdominal strain.

Matt Chapman Out Through All-Star Break

San Francisco Giants third baseman Matt Chapman (abdomen) won't participate in baseball activities over the weekend. The Giants were hopeful that Chapman could get in some action ahead of the All-Star break. That won't happen as they've decided to hold him out this weekend and hope he improves during the break. Chapman has been sidelined since July 1 due to an abdominal strain. It doesn't sound like the veteran infielder is making a ton of progress right now. There's a good chance that Chapman isn't quite ready to play at the beginning of the second half. Fantasy managers should stay tuned for more updates on his status over the next week or so.

Matt Chapman Not Feeling Any Better

San Francisco Giants third baseman Matt Chapman (abdomen) is back with the team following paternity leave, but his abdominal strain isn't feeling any better, according to Evan Webeck of The California Post. The Giants placed Chapman on the 10-day injured list on July 1. Since he hasn't made any real progress, it's highly unlikely that he will be ready to return from the IL when he's eligible to be reinstated this Saturday. It remains to be seen if the veteran right-handed slugger will be ready to rejoin the starting lineup to begin the second half of the season on Friday, July 17. In the meantime, Casey Schmitt has been filling in as San Fran's third baseman, which has opened up playing time in the outfield for rookie Victor Bericoto. The 33-year-old Chapman had a down first half of the 2026 season, his third year in the Bay Area, hitting .235/.324/.368 with a career-worst .692 OPS, seven home runs, 42 RBI, and 35 runs scored in 84 games across 352 plate appearances. Chapman's .210 xBA and .286 xwOBA don't paint a rosy picture the rest of the way, either, so fantasy managers should think twice about buying low on him.

Matt Chapman Heads to Injured List With Abdominal Strain

San Francisco Giants third baseman Matt Chapman (abdomen) is heading to the 10-day injured list on Wednesday due to an abdominal strain that he suffered while making a play at third base in Tuesday night's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks, according to Justice delos Santos of The San Jose Mercury News. The Giants called up infielder Christian Koss from Triple-A Sacramento in a corresponding move. With Chapman now likely out through the All-Star break, Casey Schmitt is expected to see most of the playing time at the hot corner in San Fran. He's starting at third and batting second for Wednesday's contest in Arizona versus D-backs right-hander Zac Gallen. The left side of the Giants' infield is currently hurting, with shortstop Willy Adames (back) also missing the last several games due to injury. Chapman heads to the IL with a disappointing .235/.324/.368 slash line with a .692 OPS and seven home runs, but he has added 42 RBI and 35 runs scored in his 307 at-bats.
