Matt Chapman Not Feeling Any Better

San Francisco Giants third baseman Matt Chapman (abdomen) is back with the team following paternity leave, but his abdominal strain isn't feeling any better, according to Evan Webeck of The California Post. The Giants placed Chapman on the 10-day injured list on July 1. Since he hasn't made any real progress, it's highly unlikely that he will be ready to return from the IL when he's eligible to be reinstated this Saturday. It remains to be seen if the veteran right-handed slugger will be ready to rejoin the starting lineup to begin the second half of the season on Friday, July 17. In the meantime, Casey Schmitt has been filling in as San Fran's third baseman, which has opened up playing time in the outfield for rookie Victor Bericoto. The 33-year-old Chapman had a down first half of the 2026 season, his third year in the Bay Area, hitting .235/.324/.368 with a career-worst .692 OPS, seven home runs, 42 RBI, and 35 runs scored in 84 games across 352 plate appearances. Chapman's .210 xBA and .286 xwOBA don't paint a rosy picture the rest of the way, either, so fantasy managers should think twice about buying low on him.

Matt Chapman Heads to Injured List With Abdominal Strain

San Francisco Giants third baseman Matt Chapman (abdomen) is heading to the 10-day injured list on Wednesday due to an abdominal strain that he suffered while making a play at third base in Tuesday night's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks, according to Justice delos Santos of The San Jose Mercury News. The Giants called up infielder Christian Koss from Triple-A Sacramento in a corresponding move. With Chapman now likely out through the All-Star break, Casey Schmitt is expected to see most of the playing time at the hot corner in San Fran. He's starting at third and batting second for Wednesday's contest in Arizona versus D-backs right-hander Zac Gallen. The left side of the Giants' infield is currently hurting, with shortstop Willy Adames (back) also missing the last several games due to injury. Chapman heads to the IL with a disappointing .235/.324/.368 slash line with a .692 OPS and seven home runs, but he has added 42 RBI and 35 runs scored in his 307 at-bats.

Matt Chapman Injures his Leg Against Arizona, Pulled Early

San Francisco Giants third baseman Matt Chapman (leg) appeared to tweak something in his right leg while making a play in the sixth inning against the division-rival Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday, according to Justice delos Santos of The San Jose Mercury News. Chapman remained in the game to hit but was eventually pulled from the contest after he popped out and wasn't running well down the base line. Luis Arraez moved from second base to third base, while Jonah Cox entered the game to play the keystone for the Gigantes. Before leaving, Chapman went 0-for-3 at the plate with a strikeout to drop his season average to .235 and his OPS to .692. The 33-year-old veteran will almost certainly undergo testing to reveal the severity of his leg injury, and fantasy managers should consider him day-to-day for now. Don't expect Chapman to be in the lineup for Wednesday's game in Arizona. Chapman continues to provide counting stats for fantasy managers as an everyday player, but overall, he's been a disappointment, coming into Tuesday's game hitting .237 (72-for-304) with seven homers, 42 RBI, and 35 runs scored in his 83 games and 349 plate appearances. UPDATE: The San Francisco Chronicle's Susan Slusser reports that Chapman has been diagnosed with an abdominal strain.

Matt Chapman Homers Twice, Going Off So Far in June

San Francisco Giants third baseman Matt Chapman is definitely starting to heat up as the summer approaches. In the team's wild 11-10 win at Oracle Park on Wednesday night over the visiting Washington Nationals, Chapman went 4-for-5 at the plate with two home runs, a double, three RBI, and three runs scored to boost his season average to .262 and his OPS to .754. Both of the 33-year-old's homers were of the solo variety as the Giants marched back from an eight-run deficit to win the ballgame. So far in June, Chapman has gone 15-for-32 (.469) with five home runs, two doubles, 18 RBI, and seven runs scored in 10 games played. The former first-rounder by the Athletics in 2014 out of California State University, Fullerton, only has six home runs on the season, but it looks like he might be coming out of his early-season funk, especially in the power department. Under the hood, he still ranks in just the 22nd percentile in xwOBA and the 29th percentile in hard-hit rate.

Matt Chapman has Monster Two-Homer, Eight-RBI Game Against Cubs

San Francisco Giants third baseman Matt Chapman had a day to remember at the friendly confines of Wrigley Field on Friday in an 18-3 drubbing of the Chicago Cubs. Chapman finished the day 2-for-3 at the plate with two home runs, eight RBI, and one strikeout to boost his batting average to .241 on the year and his OPS to .684. The 33-year-old has not had the best season offensively, but in just one day, he doubled his home run total. Chapman hit a grand slam off Cubs starter Edward Cabrera in the fourth inning, added a three-run blast in the sixth frame off reliever Ethan Roberts, and tacked on a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning. In addition to Chapman, both Casey Schmitt and Willy Adames left the yard two times apiece, marking just the third time in Giants history that three different players had two homers each. Chapman could be turning things around at the plate after a slow start in the first two months, as he's hit .310 (18-for-58) with three home runs and five doubles in his last 16 games. He's only rostered in 68% of Yahoo leagues, but his buy-low window could be closing fast.

All Eyes on Matt Chapman's Plate Discipline and Power in 2026

San Francisco Giants third baseman Matt Chapman is coming off the best season of his career in terms of plate discipline, but health and power are key storylines to monitor with the veteran infielder going forward. Chapman slashed .231/.340/.430 with 21 home runs, a 13.3% walk rate, a 23.6% strikeout rate, and 118 wRC+ last year. This was a new career-high walk rate, and also the second-best strikeout rate of his career. His power dipped slightly, but only from a 4.1% HR% in 2024 to a 3.9% HR% in 2025. Meanwhile, he continued to flash the leather at third base with 4 OAA and 4 FRV. Unfortunately, Chapman missed roughly five weeks due to right hand inflammation. He's fully healthy heading into 2026, but injury risk is always a factor to consider ahead of fantasy baseball drafts. It's a big ask, but we'd love to see Chapman continue to homer around 4% of the time, continue to showcase solid plate discipline, and stay healthy for most of the 2026 season. He currently ranks #10 among third basemen in RotoBaller's latest fantasy baseball draft rankings.

Matt Chapman's Appeal Successful, Will Play Friday Night

San Francisco Giants third baseman Matt Chapman's appeal of his one-game suspension was successful, and he will start at third and bat fifth on Friday night in a crucial divisional matchup against the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers and right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto at Oracle Park. Earlier this month, the Giants got in a little dust-up with the Colorado Rockies in which Chapman pushed Kyle Freeman. The 32-year-old will now avoid a suspension and will be available on Friday night. Chapman has gone hitless in five career at-bats against Yamamoto, but he'll also be coming into Friday's series opener in the Bay Area with a seven-game hitting streak. During his current seven-game hitting streak, Chapman has gone 11-for-24 with three home runs, three doubles, six RBI, and eight runs scored in 29 plate appearances. He has quietly produced his sixth 20-homer season in 2025.

Matt Chapman Appealing One-Game Suspension

San Francisco Giants third baseman Matt Chapman received a one-game suspension for his role in a benches-clearing incident against the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday. Specifically, the league punished Chapman for "pushing" Rockies starter Kyle Freeland after the left-hander got into a heated exchange with Giants slugger Rafael Devers in the first inning. Chapman and Freeland were among those ejected from the game, but only the former received a suspension. He's appealing the one-game ban and was in the starting lineup against the Rockies on Wednesday. Chapman blasted a 450-foot home run, his 19th of the season, in the top of the second inning. Major League Baseball will announce a decision on his appeal soon.

Matt Chapman Back in Action on Monday

San Francisco Giants third baseman Matt Chapman (foot, shin) is starting at third base and batting fifth for Monday's series opener against the hosting Colorado Rockies and right-hander Chase Dollander at Coors Field. Chapman was pulled out of Sunday's series finale against the Baltimore Orioles early after he fouled a ball off his foot/shin, but he avoided any broken bones and is feeling fine to play a day later. Although the 32-year-old veteran isn't having quite the year that fantasy managers had hoped for, he should be in starting lineups to begin the week at one of the most hitter-friendly environments in baseball against an inexperienced pitcher. The former first-rounder is two homers shy of a 20-homer season, but he also hit just .203 (13-for-64) with two homers, eight RBI and two steals in 19 games in the month of August.

Matt Chapman Leaves Early on Sunday, Expects to Play Monday

San Francisco Giants third baseman Matt Chapman (shin, foot) exited a 13-2 win over the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday after fouling a ball off his left shin/foot in the bottom of the sixth inning. Chapman finished his plate appearance with a walk before the Giants subbed in Casey Schmitt to pinch run for him. It seems that it was a precautionary move on the Giants' part, though, as Chapman said after the game that he's doing fine and expects to play on Monday against the Colorado Rockies. After going 1-for-2 with a pair of walks on Sunday, Chapman is hitting .231/.341/.430 with 18 homers, 50 RBI, 60 runs scored, and nine stolen bases in 437 plate appearances. He played in 19 games in August and went just 13-for-64 (.203) with two HRs, eight RBI, 11 runs, two steals, and 13 walks.
