Reds
The Cincinnati Reds designated right-hander Luis Cessa for assignment and also placed left-hander Reiver Sanmartin (elbow) on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to May 8) on Tuesday with a left-elbow stress reaction. The Reds also recalled right-hander Kevin Herget from Triple-A Louisville and selected the contract of right-hander Ben Lively from Louisville. Infielder Matt Reynolds was outrighted to Louisville. Cessa, 31, lost his rotation spot by allowing a league-high 26 runs on 46 hits (three homers) in 26 innings over seven outings (six starts), and now he may be looking for work elsewhere. Lively will have a shot to stick in the rebuilding Reds rotation now. Sanmartin has also struggled in 2023, posting a 7.07 ERA and 1.93 WHIP in 14 relief innings for the Reds.

Reiver Sanmartin Likely Headed For The Injured List
Cincinnati Reds southpaw Reiver Sanmartin (elbow) left Sunday's contest against the Chicago White Sox with elbow soreness. The 27-year-old told reporters that he expects to be placed on the 15-day injured list, according to Bobby Nightengale of the Enquirer. The severity of the ailment is unknown, but elbow injuries are always scary when dealing with pitchers. Sanmartin is in the midst of his third MLB season and has posted a 7.07 ERA with 13 strikeouts and 10 walks over 14 innings out of relief. After showing flashes of dominance during a cup of coffee in 2021, when he pitched to a 1.54 ERA in two starts, there was some excitement surrounding the former Reds top 30 prospect. It's safe to say that excitement is gone, and Sanmartin has no fantasy value in any format, especially with his latest injury.

Reiver Sanmartin Solid In Win Over Pirates
Cincinnati Reds left-hander Reiver Sanmartin turned in an excellent start in his team's final game of the 2021 season. Sanmartin tossed six innings of one-run ball while striking out six in a 6-3 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday. The 25-year-old wound up making two starts for the Reds in the final week of the season and showed well, posting a 2-0 record while allowing just two runs in 11 2/3 innings of work. Sanmartin certainly has made his case for a longer look at the big league level in 2022, but he will probably have to win a rotation spot in the spring. For now, Sanmartin is worth keeping an eye on in 2022 in case he does open the year in Cincinnati's starting rotation.

Reiver Sanmartin Impressive In MLB Debut
Cincinnati Reds left-hander Reiver Sanmartin was impressive in the first MLB start of his career. Sanmartin allowed one run over 5 2/3 innings while striking out five in a 13-1 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday. Sanmartin was called up to make a spot start after right-hander Luis Castillo had to go on the family medical emergency list on Monday. It is still unclear whether the Reds will keep Sanmartin in the big leagues or send him back to Triple-A Louisville following his Monday start.
