Washington Nationals first baseman/designated hitter Andres Chaparro (side) apparently injured his left side while taking batting practice on Friday before the team's Grapefruit League game against the division-rival Atlanta Braves. Chaparro left with a trainer while grabbing at his side. The 25-year-old has been in competition with Juan Yepez this spring for a roster spot and is having a great camp, batting .400 with a 1.008 OPS. Depending on the severity and specific nature of his injury, Chaparro could lose out on a roster spot and be forced to open the 2025 season on the injured list. Stay tuned for an update on his injury when the Nationals provide one. The Nats acquired the Venezuelan from the D-backs last year, and he hit .215 (26-for-121) with four homers and 15 RBI in his first 33 big-league games in 2024 in D.C. UPDATE: Chaparro is dealing with left-oblique tightness and will undergo an MRI exam on Saturday morning, according to manager Dave Martinez.
The Washington Nationals placed rookie infielder Andres Chaparro on the paternity list on Tuesday and recalled outfielder Stone Garrett from Triple-A Rochester in a corresponding move. Chaparro will almost certainly be away from the team for the entire three-game series against the Kansas City Royals this week before returning to the club for the final series of the season this weekend against the division-rival Philadelphia Phillies. The 25-year-old has hit just .215 (26-for-121) with four home runs, 12 doubles, 15 RBI, one steal, seven walks and 24 strikeouts in 132 trips to the plate in his first 33 major-league games for the Nats in 2024. Juan Yepez is making the start at first in D.C. on Tuesday against Royals left-hander Cole Ragans and could play regularly this series with Chaparro away from the team to welcome a child into his family.
Arizona Diamondbacks third base prospect Andres Chaparro was traded to the Washington Nationals in exchange for relief pitcher Dylan Floro. Chaparro sat outside of the top 30 prospects in Arizona on MLB.com but has taken significant steps forward this summer. With Triple-A Reno, the 25-year-old held an excellent .332/.403/.564 line with 19 home runs, 75 RBI, and three stolen bases. This is a stark contrast to the .247/.331/.441 line he posted last summer at the Triple-A level. Chaparro could contend for a late-season major league debut, especially if he continues to produce at an elite level at Triple-A.
Arizona Diamondbacks third base prospect Andres Chaparro broke out in a big way this week for Triple-A Reno. The 25-year-old hit .625 with three homers and 15 RBI to welcome in July. He had games this week of five, four, and three hits. The right-handed masher is hitting .328 this year with 17 homers and 68 RBI with a .979 OPS. The Venezuelan does not crack the Diamondbacks top prospect list, but he could get a big-league look if he continues to hit like this in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League.
The Arizona Diamondbacks signed free-agent infielder Andres Chaparro to a minor-league deal on Wednesday. Chaparro has big power and hit 25 home runs and drove in 89 runs in 137 games in the New York Yankees organization with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in 2023. The 24-year-old slugger has the ability to play both third base and first base as well. He was one of the most sought-after minor-league free agents this offseason, and the National League champions will now secure his services for the 2024 campaign. Before clubbing 25 long balls last season, Chaparro hit 19 home runs and posted a strong .963 OPS in 64 games at Double-A Somerset in 2022.
