James Wood Struggling at the Plate This Spring

Washington Nationals outfielder James Wood entered Monday's Grapefruit League action in spring training hitting just .074 (2-for-27) in 11 games played. The 23-year-old left-handed slugger has not hit a home run, has driven in three, scored two runs, walked five times, and struck out 10 times in 32 plate appearances. It's worth noting, but fantasy managers shouldn't put too much stock into Wood's small spring training sample size. Remember, he was a first-time All-Star in 2025 in his first full season in the majors, slashing .256/.350/.475 with an .825 OPS, 31 home runs, 94 RBI, 87 runs scored, and 15 stolen bases in 689 plate appearances over 157 games played. However, Wood did also lead the league with 221 strikeouts. The young outfielder has elite raw power and uses the entire field, making him one of the higher-upside fantasy outfielders going into just his second full MLB season. RotoBaller has Wood ranked as its No. 12 outfielder. Don't let his slow spring cause you to devalue him in upcoming drafts.

James Wood's Upside is Obvious, But he's Not Without Risk

Washington Nationals outfielder James Wood is a rising, young fantasy baseball asset after hitting .256/.350/.475 with an .825 OPS, 31 home runs, 94 RBI, 87 runs scored, and 15 stolen bases in 157 games in his first full major-league season. The 23-year-old power-hitting left-hander and former second-round pick by the San Diego Padres displayed impressive power to the opposite field last year, with 26 of his 31 total home runs going up the middle or the other way. The problem with Wood is that his long swing also leads to plenty of swings and misses. He led the league with 221 strikeouts and posted a strikeout rate of 32.1 percent. The fact that Wood was so successful in his first full MLB season bodes well for his long-term outlook, but despite being a top-35 overall fantasy player, there's some volatility and downside as well. The power is real, and RotoBaller has Wood as the No. 10 outfielder.

James Wood Absent on Thursday

Washington Nationals outfielder James Wood is out of the starting lineup ahead of Thursday's game against the Miami Marlins. This is a rare off day for Wood who hasn't sat out of a contest since August 17. It's probably a good time with left-hander Ryan Weathers on the mound for Miami. This will give the Nats a chance to play the matchup game here. Paul DeJong will serve as the designated hitter and bat seventh during Thursday's game. Fantasy managers should check their lineups and adjust accordingly ahead of first pitch.

James Wood Snaps 21-Game Home Run Drought

Washington Nationals outfielder James Wood belted his first home run since July 9 to end a 21-game drought in a 4-2 win over the San Francisco Giants on Saturday. Wood led the game off with a 385-foot homer against left-hander Carson Whisenhunt and later doubled to finish 2-for-5 with a pair of RBI. The 22-year-old made his first All-Star appearance and participated in the Home Run Derby last month, but his production over the past few weeks has been abysmal. During his 21-game dry spell, he went a shocking 9-for-80 (.113) with two RBI and 38 strikeouts against nine walks. While Wood did strike out three more times on Saturday, it's encouraging that his power stroke finally came back. Despite his month-long tailspin, Wood is still slashing a more-than-respectable .256/.357/.484 with 25 homers, 73 RBI, 64 runs scored, and 14 stolen bases in 502 plate appearances in his first full season.

James Wood Out Against Brewers

Washington Nationals outfielder James Wood will head to the bench for Sunday's series finale on the road in Milwaukee versus Brewers right-hander Freddy Peralta. Alex Call draws into the starting lineup in left field and will hit second against Peralta. The Nats will give Wood a day off heading into next week's All-Star break after he started in 174 straight games since joining the big-league roster. It makes sense, as the 22-year-old left-handed slugger will take part in the Home Run Derby and the All-Star game this coming week. The former second-rounder is one of the best young hitters in the game, but he's also gone hitless in his last three games and is batting .244 (10-for-41) with two home runs, five RBI, seven runs and a steal in 11 games in the month of July. Call has only faced Peralta once in his career and has only two homers in 175 at-bats in 2025.

James Wood Goes Yard in Five-Hit Night

Washington Nationals outfielder James Wood delivered a spectacular performance Thursday to help lead the Nats to an 11-7 victory over the Detroit Tigers. The budding superstar went 5-for-5 with a solo homer, two RBI, and three runs scored in one of the best games of his young career. Wood, named as a Home Run Derby participant on Thursday, has clubbed 23 HRs and slashed .294/.395/.563 with 67 RBI, 58 runs, and 12 steals in 387 plate appearances. Along with those superb numbers, Wood ranks in the top 4% of hitters in xwOBA, xSLG, and average exit velocity, among other batted-ball metrics. He already looks like an elite offensive player at the age of 22.

James Wood Joining Home Run Derby

Washington Nationals outfielder James Wood has accepted the invite to participate in the upcoming Home Run Derby at Truist Park in Atlanta. Wood is well deserving of this honor after slashing .283/.387/.547 with 22 home runs and 65 RBI, with 12 stolen bases so far this season. The rookie outfielder will join Cal Raleigh and Ronald Acuna Jr. so far on Monday, July 14 in Atlanta. Wood was one of the key pieces brought back in the Juan Soto trade with the San Diego Padres in 2022. The 22-year-old figures to be an important player in Washington for years to come.

James Wood Goes Yard in Nationals Victory

Washington Nationals outfielder James Wood connected on his 22nd home run of the season on Monday night, as he powered his team to a win in San Diego. Wood's three-run blast in the eighth inning was the capstone to a great night at the plate, and he finished 3-for-5 with three runs scored and four RBI. His home run provided Washington with some extra breathing room by expanding the lead to 9-3 at the time, and after a late comeback by the Padres, the Nats held on to win 10-6. The impressive 22-year-old lefty is hitting .284 this season and has 22 homers to go with 50 runs scored and 61 RBI. His 57.9% hard-hit rate and 19.6% barrel rate each rank in the top six of all eligible hitters in the majors, and he also has the seventh-highest average exit velocity. Wood has quickly become one of the top hitters in baseball, and it's amazing that he won't turn 23 until September. He's a top fantasy asset in all formats with a bright future and high ceiling.

James Wood Blasts Two Homers

Washington Nationals outfielder James Wood helped his team break a long losing streak on Thursday. Wood put his team on the board first with a two-run home run off right-hander Chase Dollander in the fourth inning. After that, Wood was pretty quiet with the bat until coming up in extra innings. Wood came up and blasted a walk-off two-run home run off right-hander Seth Halvorsen in the 11th inning. It marked his third multi-homer game of his young career. Wood finished this game 2-for-5 with two homers and four RBI in the 4-3 victory over the Colorado Rockies. The young slugger is already up to 20 homers on the season.

James Wood Homers, Doubles in Loss

Washington Nationals outfielder/designated hitter James Wood went 2-for-3 with a home run, a double, a walk, and two RBI on Monday. Despite his best efforts, the Nationals still fell in a 6-4 loss against the Rockies. Despite the defeat, Washington still must be very happy that they found their next superstar in Wood. The 22-year-old is slashing .284/.378/.550 with 18 home runs, 51 RBI, 43 runs, and nine stolen bases, making him a true five-category threat. The 6-foot-7 slugger ranks in the top two percent of the league in xSLG and hard-hit rate and even has an elite 12.9% walk rate. He's a clear top-10 outfielder for fantasy with top-five upside.
