James Wood is Progressing Slowly

Washington Nationals outfielder James Wood (oblique) is progressing more slowly than the team hoped since landing on the Injured List, according to Mark Zuckerman of NatsJournal.com. On Sunday, Nats manager Blake Butera told reporters that progress has been slow for Wood, but he hasn't been shut down from baseball activities. Wood has been throwing, taking dry swings, and swinging off a tee, but isn't ready for more intense work yet. He has been out since August 4 and will likely require a minor league rehab assignment before rejoining the Nats roster. There's a chance that Wood is back by the end of August, but fantasy managers might have to wait until the beginning of September before Wood returns.

Nationals Don't Expect James Wood to Return Later This Week

The Washington Nationals do not expect outfielder James Wood (oblique) to be ready to come off the 10-day injured list later this week when he's eligible, manager Blake Butera told Danielle Allentuck of The Washington Post. Wood took stationary dry balls and threw out to 45 feet over the weekend, and he will progress to taking dry swings on Tuesday. The left-handed power hitter has been on the shelf since suffering a left-oblique strain on Aug. 3. He's improving, but his return may not come until next week. In his absence, Dylan Crews has been starting regularly for the Nats in right field. Wood needs to be stashed in all fantasy baseball leagues while he recovers from his oblique injury as one of the best young all-around hitters in the game. Before his injury, the former second-rounder in 2021 was hitting .265 (116-for-437) with 30 home runs, 73 RBI, 17 stolen bases, and 100 runs scored in just his second full season in the major leagues. He still leads the league in runs scored and walks (90) in his 114 games played.

Nationals Place James Wood on Injured List With Oblique Strain

The Washington Nationals placed outfielder James Wood (oblique) on the 10-day injured list on Tuesday with a mild oblique strain, according to Spencer Nusbaum of The Athletic. Manager Blake Butera said the team hopes that Wood will have a close-to-minimum stay on the IL. The club is recalling outfielder Andrew Pinckney from the minors to replace Wood on the active MLB roster. It's not what Wood's fantasy managers want to hear, but the good news is that he'll have a shot to return when he's first eligible on Aug. 14. The 23-year-old left-handed slugger has been an All-Star in two of his three MLB seasons, and he currently leads the league in walks (90) and runs scored (100) while slashing .265/.393/.535 with a .928 OPS, 30 home runs, 73 RBI, and 17 stolen bases across 114 games and 535 plate appearances. Wood needs to be stashed in an IL spot in all fantasy leagues as one of the best five-category producers in the game in just his third season in the majors. He needs just two more home runs to set a new career high in that category after hitting 31 dingers in 2025.

James Wood Headed for MRI After Injuring Side on Monday

Washington Nationals outfielder James Wood (side) injured his left side on a swing in the sixth inning of his team's 6-3 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday, per Mark Zuckerman of Nats Journal. While Wood stayed in the game and took another at-bat after the injury, Zuckerman reports that the 23-year-old is going for an MRI on Tuesday. Wood has been one of the better hitters in baseball in 2026, slashing .265/.393/.535 with 30 home runs, 73 RBI, 100 runs scored, and 17 stolen bases across 535 plate appearances. The young slugger has posted elite contact metrics, logging a 21.1% barrel rate and a 58.2% hard-hit rate. If Wood misses time, Nationals infielders Jose Tena and Andres Chaparro could be in line for more playing time at designated hitter.

James Wood Hits Two Homers on Sunday for First Multi-Homer Performance in 2026

Washington Nationals outfielder James Wood continued his surge at the plate in July, going 2-for-4 with two home runs, three RBI, a walk, and a strikeout in Sunday's 10-7 win over the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks in D.C. It was Wood's first multi-homer game of the 2026 season and the fifth of his career. The 23-year-old All-Star left-handed slugger is now leading the league in walks (82), runs scored (96), plate appearances (498), OPS (.953), and total bases (228) in 106 games played for the Nats in his third year in the league. He is also slashing .271/.396/.557 with 30 home runs, 72 RBI, and 15 stolen bases as one of the best all-around bats in baseball. Wood has been especially productive in 19 games (93 plate appearances) so far in July, going 23-for-74 (.311) with a 1.198 OPS, nine home runs, four doubles, a triple, 20 RBI, 23 runs scored, and two stolen bases. He's an emerging five-category superstar for Washington and is a must-start in all fantasy formats when he's active. Wood has held his own against lefties as well, hitting .265 (40-for-151) against them with nine of his 30 long balls.

James Wood on His Way to a Career Year

Washington Nationals outfielder James Wood continues to impress and is establishing himself as one of the top power hitters in the MLB. He has hit 28 homers in 97 games and seems certain to pass his previous career-high of 31 homers from last year. His batting average is up from .256 to .279 while his wOBA has climbed from .353 to .416. He's already matched his career high with 15 stolen bases as well. He has the highest barrel rate and the highest hard-hit rate in the majors this season, along with the second-highest average exit velocity behind only Oneil Cruz. With such strong underlying metrics and elite production, Wood looks poised to be a fantasy centerpiece for years to come. He's still only 23 years old and continues to be one of the most exciting hitters in the game heading into the second half.

James Wood Has Arrived as an Elite Fantasy Outfielder

Washington Nationals outfielder James Wood has emerged as a fantasy superstar in 2026, hitting .260/.385/.511 with 20 home runs, 49 RBI, 70 runs scored, and 13 stolen bases across 382 plate appearances. Swing-and-miss is an issue for Wood (30% strikeout rate). However, Wood's underlying contact metrics are elite, as he's logged a 23.6% barrel rate and a 60.8% hard-hit rate. The 23-year-old's ability to consistently make hard contact should allow him to maintain a solid floor for his batting average, even with his elevated strikeout rate. As long as he stays healthy, Wood is a near lock to provide elite power and run production numbers and above-average speed for fantasy managers the rest of the way in 2026.

James Wood a Reliable Source of Elite Raw Power

Washington Nationals outfielder James Wood is only 23 years old, but he's already one of the best sources of raw power production in the big leagues. The 6-foot-6, 234-pounder was a first-time All-Star in 2025 in his first full year in the majors despite leading the league with 221 strikeouts in 689 plate appearances. He hit 31 homers, drove in 94 runs, and even stole 15 bases in 157 games. So far in 41 games in 2026, the former second-round selection by the San Diego Padres in 2021 has gone 38-for-156 (.244) with 11 home runs, 11 doubles, 28 RBI, 35 runs scored, seven stolen bases, a league-leading 35 walks, and 60 strikeouts across 41 games and 194 plate appearances. Wood is hitting .265 (9-for-34) with a homer, four doubles, four RBI, five runs, and two steals in nine games so far in May and remains a must-start in all traditional fantasy formats as a high-upside power bat with excellent on-base skills. He currently ranks in the 99th percentile in hard-hit rate and the 97th percentile in walk rate, which is a recipe for success long term.

James Wood Off To a Hot Start Through 12 Games

Washington Nationals outfielder James Wood has connected on four homers in his first dozen games this season, and he's hitting the ball well despite a .216 batting average. He has cut down on his strikeout rate a bit from last season and has an improved .294 ISO and .370 wOBA. Wood has a 54.5% hard-hit rate and an impressive 21.2% barrel rate so far this year, and his low batting average seems to be mostly bad BABIP luck (.241). Wood has 11 runs scored and 10 RBI in his first 12 games and should continue to be at the heart of the Nationals' run production. The hulking 23-year-old still has room for improvement and continues to deliver strong power and run production numbers. He continues to be a top outfield option in all fantasy formats.

James Wood Dealt With Several Injuries in 2025

Washington Nationals outfielder James Wood admitted that he dealt with nagging knee and quadriceps injuries in 2025, which helps explain why he cooled off so much in the second half, according to Spencer Nusbaum of The Athletic. Wood initially dealt with left-quad tendinitis in spring training last year before recovering and playing well in the first half of the season. "It was just kind of more of a nagging thing. One series I'd feel great, and the next, not so great. So it was just kind of a series-by-series, or week-by-week thing," Wood said. The young left-handed slugger came into the 2026 season fully healthy, but he's hitting .111 with a homer, 12 strikeouts, and a .496 OPS in the early going this year. The difference this year is that Wood believes he's better equipped to handle slumps, and he's not worried about the lower-body injuries that plagued him a year ago. There's no reason to go into panic mode on the 23-year-old just yet.
