Nationals Acquire Pitching Prospect Luis Perales From Boston

The Washington Nationals acquired right-handed pitching prospect Luis Perales from the Boston Red Sox on Monday in exchange for left-handed pitching prospect Jake Bennett, sources told Jeff Passan of ESPN. Perales, 22, has missed most of the past two years while recovering from Tommy John surgery, appearing in only 12 games (10 starts) across the Red Sox's minor-league system. He has a fastball that hits triple digits and is already being considered Washington's No. 5 prospect by MLB Pipeline. The 6-foot-1, 160-pound Venezuelan hurler also has a nasty splitter and features a slider and a cutter as other secondary pitches. Perales has athleticism and elite arm speed, but he's small for a starter, and his durability is a concern. If Perales cannot make it as a starter, the Nats could try him in a high-leverage relief role. His innings will be closely monitored in 2026, and he's probably a long shot to make his MLB debut.

Luis Perales to Debut at Triple-A Worcester this Week

Boston Red Sox pitching prospect Luis Perales (elbow) is expected to make his debut at Triple-A Worcester this week. Boston's ninth-ranked prospect made his season debut at Double-A on Saturday, pitching one inning where he allowed one walk, no hits, and he did not strike out a batter. The 22-year-old is returning from Tommy John surgery, which he needed after throwing just 33 2/3 innings in 2024. The right-hander has big-time strikeout stuff, fanning 32.3 percent of batters he's faced during his time in the minors, and the walk rate improved a great deal in his limited action in 2024. The 6-foot-1 Venezuelan could make his MLB debut as soon as next year, so even redraft managers should be familiar with him, and if he can keep the walks down, it should be as a starter and not as a reliever.

Luis Perales Assigned To Minor-League Camp

The Boston Red Sox have assigned right-handed pitching prospect Luis Perales (elbow) to minor-league camp. The 21-year-old is still recovering from the Tommy John surgery he underwent last June. Fantasy managers should not expect him to be available to pitch in a minor-league game this season. Before the surgery, Perales spent most of the season at High-A and received a brief look at Double-A. In 22 1/3 innings at High-A, Perales held a 3.63 ERA with a 1.45 WHIP. He tallied an impressive 38 strikeouts with just nine free passes. During his brief seven 1/3-inning taste of Double-A, Perales allowed just one earned run and tallied 10 strikeouts. When he is cleared to return, fantasy managers should expect him to return to Double-A and could push for a late 2026 MLB debut given the strikeout upside he showed at the lower levels of the minor leagues.

Luis Perales Promoted To Double-A

The Boston Red Sox have promoted pitching prospect Luis Perales to Double-A Portland. Peralaes, 21, is the clubs No. 9 prospect according to MLB.com. The 6'5 right-hander pitched very well in High-A with a 3.42 ERA in seven starts and an impressive 46 strikeouts in 26 1/3 innings. Signed out of Venezuela in 2019, Perales has an electric arm that can reach up to 99 MPH with his fastball. The downside to his outstanding fastball is that he has struggled with developing his secondary pitches. At such a young age, Perales has plenty of time to continuing developing and managers shouldn't worry about his name for a couple of seasons.
