Abimelec Ortiz Optioned to Triple-A

The Washington Nationals announced on Wednesday that they optioned first baseman/designated hitter Abimelec Ortiz to Triple-A Rochester. The left-handed slugger had spent his entire career in the Texas organization before being acquired this offseason in the MacKenzie Gore trade. He showed well in his first taste of Triple-A pitching in 2025, slashing .283/.388/.565 with nine home runs and a 12.7 percent walk rate in 41 games there. The 24-year-old was just 3-for-22 (.136) in Cactus League play, though, and will have to continue his development with the team's Triple-A affiliate. It's possible the Nats' 24th-ranked prospect debuts later this season, but for now, he's off the fantasy radar.

Abimelec Ortiz Sent to Washington in Trade, Could Compete for Opening Day Role?

The Washington Nationals acquired first-base prospect Abimelec Ortiz, along with Gavin Fien, Alejandro Rosario, Devin Fitz-Gerald, and Yeremy Cabrera from the Texas Rangers, in return for left-handed pitcher MacKenzie Gore. Gore saw his name in many trade discussions throughout the winter, and the Nationals were able to acquire several high-end prospects in return. Oritz was viewed as the No. 18-ranked prospect in the Texas system on MLB.com prior to the trade. Last summer, the first baseman opened the campaign with Double-A but was able to join Triple-A Round Rock after an 89-game stint. With Double-A, Ortiz held a .247/.343/.444 line with 19 doubles, 16 home runs, and three stolen bases. During his first taste of Triple-A, Ortiz looked quite comfortable, holding a .283/.388/.565 line with a .953 OPS and nine home runs (across 41 games). Given Washington's lack of options at first base, Ortiz could make a strong case to begin the season in the big leagues. He is a name to closely monitor heading into camp.

Abimelec Ortiz Snaps Skid with Two-Hit Game

Texas Rangers infield/outfield prospect Abimelec Ortiz went 2-for-4 with a home run during their contest against Double-A Amarillo on Tuesday evening. Entering this contest, the No. 13-ranked prospect in the system was in a bit of a slump at the plate. Over his last five contests, he went 1-for-18 at the plate with an 8:2 K:BB. However, before this slump, Ortiz posted an impressive .425/.511/.750 slash line with three long balls over his last 10 contests. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor the 23-year-old's progression as he will likely be in the mix to earn a promotion to Triple-A later this season. However, he will likely not reach the majors until the 2026 campaign. Through 41 games at Double-A, Ortiz has held a .250/.341/.438 line.

Abimelec Ortiz Goes Deep On Wednesday

Texas Rangers first base prospect Abimelec Ortiz went 2-for-4 with a home run on Wednesday evening. Through his first look at Double-A pitching this season, the 22-year-old has struggled to find consistency with a .211/.282/.341 slash line, just six home runs, and 31 RBI. However, in his past nine games, the infielder has begun to heat up with an excellent .400/.447/.571 line, three doubles, five RBI, and a 3:8 BB:K ratio. Ortiz is considered the 11th-best prospect in the Texas pipeline on MLB.com and should see most of next season at Triple-A.
