Nationals Place Josiah Gray on 60-Day Injured List

The Washington Nationals placed right-hander Josiah Gray (elbow) on the 60-day injured list (retroactive to March 22) on Monday with a right-flexor strain in his right elbow, according to the team. Gray was expected to be part of Washington's starting rotation in 2026 after missing all of 2025 while recovering from Tommy John surgery, but now he'll miss at least the first two months of the season. It's really bad news for Gray's dynasty/keeper value, and he can obviously be avoided for now in all single-year mixed leagues. He was an All-Star as recently as 2023 in his second full season with the Nats, but he made just two starts the following year and hasn't pitched in the majors since. Gray's new right-elbow injury has allowed left-hander Foster Griffin to make the team's Opening Day starting rotation in D.C. Gray didn't have great command of his pitches before having Tommy John surgery, so it could be rough going for him if/when he returns in 2026.

Nationals Option Josiah Gray to Triple-A

The Washington Nationals announced on Thursday that they optioned right-hander Josiah Gray to Triple-A Rochester. The Nationals are going to give Gray a little more time to ease himself back in after he spent all of 2025 rehabbing from Tommy John surgery. The 28-year-old was a first-time All-Star in 2023 for the Nats, but he made just two starts in 2024 before being shut down with right-elbow trouble. He has allowed only one earned run while walking one and striking out five in 4 2/3 innings over two Grapefruit League starts this spring, but the Nationals will be able to control his workload a bit better with him at Rochester to begin the season. Gray should be in Washington's starting rotation at some point in 2026, but fantasy managers in deep-mixed leagues can take a wait-and-see approach. In his four years in the majors, Gray has a 4.84 ERA (5.50 FIP), 1.42 WHIP, and 382:184 K:BB in 386 2/3 innings over 74 outings (73 starts).

Josiah Gray Could Earn Opening Day Start

Washington Nationals right-handed pitcher Josiah Gray could get the starting nod on Opening Day, according to Jessica Camerato of MLB.com. Gray was sidelined for nearly the entire 2025 campaign after undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2024. He returned to the bump late in 2025 in the minor leagues. Across a brief 5 2/3-inning stint, Gray did not allow a run and helda 5:5 K:BB. During his last full season in Washington (2023), Gray logged 159 innings to the tune of a 3.91 ERA with a 1.46 WHIP. He struck out 143 hitters while allowing walks at a 11.5% rate. With MacKenzie Gore now in Texas, Gore figures to compete for the lead role in the rotation alongside Jake Irvin and Cade Cavalli. Given his inconsistent command, Gray is best left for deeper 15+ team formats as a streaming option.

Nationals Avoid Arbitration With Josiah Gray

The Washington Nationals avoided salary arbitration with right-hander Josiah Gray (elbow) on Friday by agreeing to a one-year, $1.35 million deal, a source told ESPN's Jeff Passan. Gray is expected to be ready to pitch in spring training after missing all of the 2025 campaign due to right-elbow surgery. The 27-year-old will make the same money that he did this past season. Gray was a former second-round selection by the Cincinnati Reds in 2018 out of Le Moyne College in New York. He broke into the big leagues in 2021 with the Los Angeles Dodgers before making his way to D.C. Gray was an All-Star in 2023 despite going 8-13 with a 3.91 ERA and 1.46 WHIP in 30 starts. He made only two starts in 2024 before being shut down with elbow issues. Fantasy managers should take a wait-and-see approach on Gray in 2026, especially since he will probably face a strict innings limit in his first season back.

Josiah Gray Won't Pitch for Nationals in 2025

Washington Nationals starting pitcher Josiah Gray (elbow) won't make it back to the big league mound before the end of the regular season. Gray has been working his way back from last year's Tommy John surgery. He was able to make a few rehab starts, but doesn't have enough time to get ready to throw a big league game. He'll return to the team's spring training complex, which will end any chances of Gray pitching in the big leagues in 2025. The expectation is that Gray should be ready in time for the beginning of the 2026 campaign.

Josiah Gray to Start Rehab Assignment Sunday

Washington Nationals right-hander Josiah Gray (elbow) will start for High-A Wilmington on Sunday, according to Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com. It'll be Gray's first game action since he underwent Tommy John surgery with an internal-brace procedure in July 2024. Gray only made two starts last season (none after April 4), but he was an All-Star out of the Nationals' rotation in 2023. He racked up 30 starts that year and recorded a 3.91 ERA with a 1.46 WHIP, 143 strikeouts, and 80 walks in 159 innings. The 27-year-old isn't expected to return to the majors this season, but he could push for a rotation spot next spring.

Josiah Gray Throws Live Batting Practice on Tuesday

Washington Nationals right-hander Josiah Gray (elbow) threw 30 pitches over two "innings" during live batting practice on Tuesday in West Palm Beach, Fla., according to Mark Zuckerman of MASN. Gray has yet to pitch all year after having Tommy John with an internal brace in July of last year. While the 27-year-old is ramping up, he's probably going to need a minor-league rehab assignment before being a realistic candidate to come off the 60-day injured list. There is no guarantee that Gray will be able to make a cameo for Washington in the big leagues before the end of September, and even if he does, the Nationals will likely be very careful with his pitch count. Gray was lit up for 13 earned runs in just 8 1/3 innings in his two starts last year before going under the knife, but he did have an ERA under 4.00 with 143 K's in 30 starts for the Nats as a first-time All-Star in 2023.

Josiah Gray Throws Live Batting Practice

Washington Nationals right-hander Josiah Gray (elbow/forearm) threw live batting practice on Tuesday. It's the first time the 27-year-old has faced hitters since he underwent Tommy John surgery and internal-brace procedure in July 2024. Even if Gray is unable to return this year, it's a good sign heading into the offseason. Gray only took the ball twice a season ago after setting career-high marks in starts (30) and innings (159) in 2023. He put up a 3.91 ERA (5.03 xERA) that year with a 1.46 WHIP and 143 strikeouts against 80 walks. If healthy, Gray should be in the running for a rotation spot in 2026.

Josiah Gray Throwing Bullpens, Not Facing Hitters Yet

Washington Nationals right-hander Josiah Gray (elbow, forearm) is continuing to throw bullpen sessions at the team's facility in Florida, but he's not ready to face live hitters yet, per Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com. The Nationals are taking a cautious approach with Gray, who's a little over a year removed from undergoing Tommy John surgery and internal-brace procedure in July 2024. Time is running out on a potential Gray return this year, as he'll still need to embark on a rehab assignment after several sessions against live hitters. In 2023, his most recent healthy season, the 27-year-old threw a career-high 159 innings and logged a 3.91 ERA with a 1.46 WHIP and 143 strikeouts against 80 walks.

Josiah Gray Throwing Bullpens

Washington Nationals right-hander Josiah Gray (elbow, forearm) has progressed to throwing bullpen sessions of 30 pitches at the team's spring training complex after having Tommy John surgery and internal-brace procedure on July 24 of last year. The 27-year-old is making progress from elbow reconstruction, but even if he doesn't have any setbacks as he continues to ramp up his arm, he's not expected to be available for the Nationals until later in the second half of the 2025 season. At that point, he won't have much fantasy appeal and will likely be on a strict workload limit. Once Gray begins facing live hitters, a lengthy minor-league rehab assignment will likely follow. The former second-round pick by the Cincinnati Reds in 2018 was a first-time All-Star in 2023, when he had a 3.91 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 143:80 K:BB in 159 innings over 30 starts.
