Detroit Tigers outfielder Brandon Dixon came up big late in the team's 4-2 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday. Dixon went 1-for-4 with two strikeouts, but the hit essentially gave the Tigers the victory. The 27-year-old left fielder came up to the plate in the top of the ninth and quickly untied the 2-2 game by delivering Branden Kline's first pitch of the at-bat over the center field fence for a two-run dinger. It was his fifth home run of the season and second in the past five games. The second-year pro, who has struck out 30 times in 72 at-bats, is currently hitting .306 on the season with a respectable .931 OPS.
The Cincinnati Reds called up utility man Brandon Dixon on Tuesday, optioning Rosell Herrera to make room. Dixon, 26, will get his first taste of major league pitching after spending time in the Los Angeles Dodgers and Cincinnati farm systems. Dixon has some power in his bat but is not a good defender, which makes him better suited as a designated hitter. That won't be an option in the National League, so it remains to be seen just how Cincinnati plans to utilize him.
