Ryan Walker Recalled to Major Leagues, Will He Reclaim Closer Job?

San Francisco Giants right-hander Ryan Walker has been recalled from Triple-A Sacramento on Friday ahead of the team's weekend set against the Chicago Cubs. Walker opened 2026 as the Giants' primary closer but was sent down in early May after recording a 6.46 ERA and 1.89 WHIP with 14 strikeouts and three blown saves across his first 15 1/3 innings of the season. The 30-year-old performed much better in Triple-A, logging a 1.93 ERA and 1.07 WHIP with seven strikeouts and one save across 8 1/3 innings (nine games). Upon his return, Walker may be the favorite to eventually reclaim the closer role in San Francisco. The Giants have used a committee approach in the ninth inning since demoting Walker, with right-hander Caleb Kilian currently leading the team with four saves. Despite his recent struggles, Walker has logged 30 saves for the Giants since the start of the 2024 season and could be worth targeting on the waiver wire now that he's back in San Francisco.

Ryan Walker Optioned to Triple-A

San Francisco Giants right-hander Ryan Walker has been optioned to Triple-A Sacramento, according to Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area. Walker opened 2026 as San Francisco's primary closer, but he's struggled mightily so far this season. Across 15 1/3 innings (16 games), Walker has pitched to a 6.46 ERA and 1.89 WHIP with 14 strikeouts. He was just three for six on save chances and had allowed seven earned runs over his last four outings before being sent down. Walker's struggles to open 2026 were a continuation of his down year in 2025, when he pitched to a 4.11 ERA. San Francisco will now give the 30-year-old a chance to work through his struggles in a lower-pressure environment in the minor leagues. Right-hander Caleb Killian saw the most recent save opportunity for San Francisco and could be taking over the team's ninth-inning role.

Ryan Walker Blows Second Save, Falling Out of Closer Committee?

San Francisco Giants right-handed reliever Ryan Walker blew his second save of the season and was tagged with the loss in the first game of a doubleheader on Thursday versus the Philadelphia Phillies, and he could be running out of chances going forward in save situations in the Bay Area. Walker's first blown save came on April 18 against the Washington Nationals. He secured his second and third saves of the season his next two times out, though, and he also threw a scoreless outing on April 25 against the Miami Marlins before blowing the save on Thursday. Although the 30-year-old remains the primary option for saves for the Giants, he also has two holds and isn't your traditional closer. With his latest misstep on Thursday in Philly, Walker could be losing his grip on the ninth inning, with lefty Erik Miller and righty Keaton Winn potentially entering the picture of a committee approach for San Fran. Walker allowed two earned runs on three hits while walking none and striking out one in two-thirds of an inning against the Phillies on Thursday.

Ryan Walker Earns Third Save, Fully Reclaiming Ninth-Inning Role?

San Francisco Giants relief pitcher Ryan Walker earned his third save of the season on Wednesday night, issuing a walk but recording three outs to preserve his team's 3-0 victory. Walker seems to be back in the main closer role for the Giants and has picked up two saves in the last two days. On the season, he has worked 11 innings in 11 games with 12 strikeouts and four earned runs allowed for a 3.27 ERA and 3.78 FIP. Walker is the only pitcher on the Giants with more than one save, with Erik Miller and Blade Tidwell also earning a save earlier this year. Miller and Tidwell could cover occasionally, but it seems that Walker has stepped back in as the team's primary closer. While he isn't an elite option, he should be a solid source of saves if you need a bullpen boost.

Ryan Walker Converts Second Save, Gradually Emerging as Primary Option?

San Francisco Giants right-handed reliever Ryan Walker converted his second save of the year in the team's 3-1 win on Tuesday night over the division-rival Los Angeles Dodgers at Oracle Park, and he could be becoming the team's primary option for saves. Walker threw a scoreless ninth inning with no hits allowed, no walks, and two strikeouts. The 30-year-old veteran threw 10 of his 15 pitches for strikes and didn't face any resistance from L.A., retiring the side to preserve San Fran's two-run lead. It was his first save since March 30, but he still appears to be the team's preferred choice for saves. No other reliever on the Giants has more than one save, although lefty Erik Miller picked up the previous save opportunity last Thursday. Walker has allowed four earned runs on nine hits (one homer) while walking five and striking out 12 in his 10 innings of work so far in 2026 in his fourth year in the majors. Fantasy managers searching for saves might want to look his way off the waiver wire. Walker is rostered in just 60% of Yahoo leagues at the moment.

Ryan Walker Remains in Setup Role on Thursday

San Francisco Giants relief pitcher Ryan Walker once again was called upon in a non-save situation on Thursday. The right-hander was handed the ball in the seventh inning of Thursday's game against the Cincinnati Reds. Walker was solid as he tossed a scoreless outing with one strikeout to earn himself the hold. The Giants decided to go with left-hander Erik Miller in the ninth inning of Thursday's game. It went well for Miller, who struck out three batters to earn his first save of the season. Clearly, Walker isn't the full-time closer, and the Giants want to continue going closer-by-committee. Fantasy managers who are relying on Walker for saves might need to start looking elsewhere.

Ryan Walker the Front-Runner for Ninth-Inning Work in San Francisco?

San Francisco Giants relief pitcher Ryan Walker allowed two runs but earned the save during Monday's 3-2 win over the San Diego Padres. Walker entered with a 3-0 lead, and he allowed a walk and a two-run homer before recording the final out to secure the victory. He also struck out one batter along the way. It wasn't a very pretty outing, but he earned the save nonetheless. Each of Walker's last two appearances has come in the ninth inning, so it appears Giants manager Tony Vitello plans to use him as the club's closer for now. The two-pitch righty has struck out three batters over 2.1 innings so far this year, but he needs to cut down on walks and induce more ground balls in order to produce better results going forward. He currently ranks #19 among relievers in RotoBaller's latest fantasy baseball rankings for 2026.

Ryan Walker Could Be an Undervalued Source of Saves Heading into 2026

After notching 10 saves and a 1.91 ERA across 76 appearances in 2024, San Francisco Giants relief pitcher Ryan Walker entered 2025 as the team's primary ninth-inning option. While Walker collected 17 more saves in 2025, he struggled to a 4.11 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP, and eventually lost his job to emergent Giants right-hander Randy Rodriguez (elbow). However, Rodriguez underwent Tommy John surgery on his right elbow in late August 2025, opening the door for Walker to reclaim his ninth-inning role. Entering 2026, Walker is expected to get the first shot as San Francisco's primary closer. While the Giants have other quality relief options like left-hander Erik Miller, there is no clear option to replace Walker even if he encounters some early-season struggles. Walker has sleeper potential if he can rediscover his 2024 form, but his profile is not without significant downside risk for fantasy managers entering 2026.

Ryan Walker to Start the Season as Giants Closer?

San Francisco Giants relief pitcher Ryan Walker is likely to get the first shot at being the team's primary closer, even after a down year in 2025. Walker took over closing duties in 2024 and was excellent on his way to a 1.91 ERA and 2.52 FIP in 80 innings across 76 appearances. In 2025, though, his ERA climbed to 4.11 and fIP to 3.31. He had a career-high 17 saves but also had six blown saves and a 1.27 WHIP. Walker has made it clear coming into camp that he wants the ball in high-leverage situations, and he seems to have the inside track for the job. The rest of the bullpen doesn't have much combined experience closing games, so if Walker stumbles like he did last year, it will likely be Joel Peguero, Erik Miller, or Jose Butto who have to step up.

Ryan Walker Implodes in Loss

San Francisco Giants closer Ryan Walker had an outing to forget in a 3-2 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday. After Giants hurlers Justin Verlander, Joey Lucchesi, and Jose Butto combined for eight scoreless innings, Walker entered in the ninth to preserve a two-run lead. He wasn't up to the task. The right-hander faced five hitters and failed to retire any of them. Along with hitting a batter, he gave up four hits - including a walk-off double by Jordan Walker - en route to his fifth loss and sixth blown save of the season. The 29-year-old entered the game having surrendered just four earned runs since the start of July, but he nearly matched that total on Saturday. Walker now has a 3.93 ERA with a 1.16 WHIP, 55:14 K:BB, and 14 saves in 2025.
