Shane Bieber to Throw Off a Mound on Saturday

The Athletic's Mitch Bannon reports that Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Shane Bieber (elbow) will throw off a mound for the first time on Saturday. Bieber didn't throw off a mound all spring due to elbow/forearm issues. The Blue Jays aren't going to take any chances with the 30-year-old veteran, especially after he didn't make his season debut in 2025 until August after recovering from Tommy John surgery on his right elbow. The former American League Cy Young and two-time All-Star had a 3.57 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, and 37:7 K:BB in seven regular-season starts for the Blue Jays last year before posting a 3.86 ERA, 1.45 WHIP, and 18:6 K:BB in 18 2/3 playoff innings. Bieber can still be useful (when healthy) as starting rotation depth in deep-mixed leagues, but he's no longer as dominant as he once was after giving up plenty of loud contact in his return in 2025. Fantasy managers shouldn't expect Bieber to be an option to come off the 15-day injured list until May.

Shane Bieber to Throw Off a Mound This Week

Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Shane Bieber (elbow) will throw off a mound this week, general manager Ross Atkins told Keegan Matheson of MLB.com. Bieber still needs a full ramp-up that will simulate spring training, but it's a big step in his return from forearm/elbow fatigue. The 30-year-old veteran was placed on the 15-day injured list to start the 2026 regular season. Up to this point this spring, Bieber has been limited to throwing on flat ground. He didn't make his 2025 debut until August last year while recovering from Tommy John surgery. When he returned, Bieber's velocity was up, but he still gave up plenty of hard contact and had a 3.57 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, and 37:7 K:BB in 40 1/3 innings over seven regular-season starts. He then went 2-1 in five postseason games (four starts), allowing nine runs (eight earned) while striking out 18 and walking six in 18 2/3 frames. Barring a setback, Bieber could be a back-end rotation arm for fantasy managers at some point in May.

Shane Bieber Officially Goes on 15-Day Injured List

The Toronto Blue Jays placed right-hander Shane Bieber (elbow) on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to March 22) on Wednesday with right-elbow inflammation, according to Sportsnet's Arden Zwelling. Bieber was looking like a potential value pick in 2026 fantasy drafts this spring at the end of last year, but he reportedly dealt with right-forearm fatigue last year, so the Blue Jays are playing it safe with the veteran 30-year-old. Bieber has yet to throw off a mound this spring, so he has a ways to go and might not be able to make his 2026 season debut until May. He didn't debut last year until late August after recovering from Tommy John surgery, and he went 4-2 with a 3.57 ERA (4.47 FIP), 1.02 WHIP, and 37:7 K:BB in 40 1/3 innings over seven regular-season starts after his return. Most promising was the fact that Bieber's velocity was up. He gave up a lot of hard contact, though, and more injury concerns going into this season make him a more volatile fantasy stash for rotation depth.

Shane Bieber "Progressing Well," Remains Without a Firm Return Timeline

Toronto Blue Jays manager John Schneider said that starting pitcher Shane Bieber (forearm) is "progressing well" and could return to throwing off a mound "fairly soon," per Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet. Bieber made his return from April 2024 Tommy John surgery in late August 2025, but dealt with forearm fatigue during Toronto's postseason run that will delay his start to 2026. With Bieber, Jose Berrios (elbow), and Trey Yesavage (shoulder) all set to open the year on the Injured List, Toronto's starting pitching depth will be tested early on. Bieber pitched well across 40 1/3 innings (seven starts) for the Blue Jays in 2025, recording a 4-2 record with a 3.57 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, and 37 strikeouts. He should provide fantasy-relevant production when healthy in 2026, but his ability to stay on the mound for any extended stretch of time has to be considered a major question mark.

Shane Bieber Getting Closer to Throwing Off a Mound?

MLB.com's Keegan Matheson reports that the Toronto Blue Jays plan to keep starting pitcher Shane Bieber (forearm) on his normal throwing schedule for the "next few days" before seeing if he's ready to throw off a mound for the first time "a week from now." Bieber dealt with right forearm fatigue late in Toronto's 2025 postseason run, which will lead to him starting 2026 on the Injured List. The 30-year-old underwent Tommy John surgery in April 2024 that kept him sidelined until late August 2025. Bieber pitched well across 40 1/3 innings (seven starts) for the Blue Jays upon his return to the mound, recording a 4-2 record with a 3.57 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, and 37 strikeouts. If he can work his way back to full health, Bieber could re-emerge as a fantasy-relevant starting pitcher in 2026. However, he remains without a firm return timeline and has to be considered a major health risk, given that he has not made more than 21 starts in a season since 2022.

Shane Bieber Continues to Throw on Flat Ground

Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Shane Bieber (forearm) continues to throw on flat ground in camp, according to Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet. All of the reports on Bieber's throwing program in spring training have been good, but there's still no timetable for when he'll get up on a mound. The 30-year-old former American League Cy Young winner made his return from Tommy John surgery last year but then dealt with right-forearm fatigue late in the year as the Blue Jays made a run to the World Series. The two-time All-Star pitched well in his seven regular-season starts, allowing 16 earned runs on 34 hits (eight homers) while walking seven and striking out 37 in 40 1/3 innings. Bieber made five appearances (four starts) in the postseason, allowing nine runs (eight earned) while walking six and fanning 18 in 18 2/3 frames. He has already been ruled out for Opening Day, making him a tough sell in shallow mixed leagues as starting rotation depth.

Shane Bieber Throwing at 120 Feet, Timeline Remains Fuzzy

Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Shane Bieber (forearm) is still throwing at 120 feet in camp, but he has yet to throw off a mound, manager John Schneider told MLB.com's Keegan Matheson. Everything appears to be going according to plan, but Matheson writes that it's hard to chart out any sort of timeline for Bieber's return until he throws a real bullpen session for the first time. The 30-year-old former American League Cy Young winner pitched through right-forearm fatigue during last year's run to the World Series, so the Blue Jays are slow-playing him this spring, and it's already been announced that he'll open the 2026 campaign on the injured list. We should have a better idea of his timetable once he starts throwing off the mound in the next two weeks. Bieber didn't debut in 2025 until August while recovering from Tommy John surgery, but he pitched well when he returned and was an asset in the postseason. Fantasy managers should not be counting on him to return to ace form, but he's worth stashing in an IL spot in deep-mixed leagues for rotation depth.

Shane Bieber "Feeling Good," Throwing Up to 120 Feet

Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Shane Bieber (forearm) is making progress in camp, according to Keegan Matheson of MLB.com. "Biebs isn't that far behind. Biebs is feeling good. He's out to [throwing at] 120 feet. Hopefully, in the next week to two weeks, he's getting off the mound and starting his progression," manager John Schneider said. It's good news for Bieber, but the Blue Jays already said that the 30-year-old veteran will begin the 2026 season on the injured list as he recovers from right-forearm fatigue. Bieber is expected to start throwing bullpen sessions within the next two weeks. Barring a setback as he ramps up, it might not be long before he's able to make his 2026 debut in his first full season in Toronto. He didn't debut last year until late August while recovering from Tommy John surgery, and he went 4-2 with a 3.57 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, and 37 K's in his seven regular-season starts. Bieber was a Cy Young winner in the shortened 2020 season and has a track record of being an ace, but fantasy managers can't realistically expect him to return to those levels. RotoBaller has him ranked as the No. 95 starting pitcher in fantasy.

Shane Bieber to Open Season on Injured List

Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Shane Bieber (forearm) will open the 2026 season on the injured list, according to Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet. Bieber is dealing with right-forearm fatigue and will have his ramp-up during spring training delayed past Opening Day. Manager John Schneider said Bieber is feeling good and is playing catch, but he's week-to-week and won't start the season on time. The 30-year-old still hasn't recovered from the extra workload he took on last fall during the team's run to the World Series. Bieber pitched well in the postseason, but he made five appearances after making seven starts for Toronto in the regular season in his return from Tommy John surgery. He pitched well in his return and showed an increase in his velocity, but this is a reminder that Bieber carries significant injury risk.

Shane Bieber Staying in Toronto for 2026

Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Shane Bieber will stay in Canada next year after exercising his $16 million player option for the 2026 season on Tuesday, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post. After spending the first seven years of his MLB career with the Cleveland Guardians, Bieber made his debut in Toronto in 2025, and it was a success. The 30-year-old former American League Cy Young winner and two-time All-Star got a late start after recovering from Tommy John surgery, limiting him to just seven regular-season starts. In 40 1/3 innings pitched, Bieber went 4-2 with a 3.57 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, 37 strikeouts, and only seven walks. In five postseason outings (four starts), he allowed nine runs (eight earned) on 21 hits (three homers) while walking six and fanning 18 in 18 2/3 innings. Bieber may never recapture his pre-Tommy John form in Toronto in the tough AL East, but he's certainly worth gambling on in fantasy in 2026 as a mid-rotation starter.
