The Carolina Panthers are releasing wide receiver Cam Johnson and tight end Jordan Matthews on Tuesday, according to NFL.com. The team also activated veteran wideout Adam Thielen from Injured Reserve. Johnson went unselected in the 2023 NFL Draft out of Northwestern and has spent time on the Cowboys and Panthers practice squad. Matthews, who began his career as a wide receiver out of Vanderbilt in 2014, has been with Carolina since 2023, but he only played in one game for the organization. These moves do not have any fantasy football impact.

Panthers Release Jordan Matthews
The Carolina Panthers released tight end Jordan Matthews on Tuesday. Matthews had yet to record a statistic in 2024. Fantasy managers may remember Matthews as the tight end who enjoyed success in Philadelphia from 2014 to 2016 prior to the rise of Zach Ertz. Those days are long gone, however, as Matthews has not been a fantasy factor in several years. The Panthers offense is something that fantasy managers should stay away from anyway, and this move does not affect that assessment.

Jordan Matthews Finds End Zone In Preseason Finale
Carolina Panthers tight end Jordan Matthews caught all three of his targets for 21 yards and a touchdown in the team's preseason win over the Buffalo Bills. The 32-year-old started the game with all of Carolina's starters and saw two targets on the initial drive, one of which being an eight-yard touchdown from Bryce Young. While it may be the case that Matthews is the starting tight end, he will continue to compete with Tommy Tremble, Ian Thomas, and rookie Ja'Tavion Sanders for snaps and touches at the position. The makeup of this tight end room will be worth monitoring for fantasy managers, as whoever the starter is may become a streaming option throughout the season.

Jordan Matthews Goes For 48 Yards In Loss
Carolina Panthers tight end Jordan Matthews caught all three of his targets for 48 yards in the team's loss to the New England Patriots, leading all pass-catchers in yards on the night. The bulk of his yardage came from a 28-yard pass from Jack Plummer in the second quarter. The 31-year-old spent the majority of last season on Carolina's practice squad. With the addition of rookie tight end Ja'Tavion Sanders, Matthews will likely remain on the practice squad this season and is off the radar from a fantasy perspective.

Jordan Matthews Joins Panthers Practice Squad
Veteran wide receiver/tight end Jordan Matthews signed with the Carolina Panthers as a member of the practice squad on Wednesday. The 31-year-old last played for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2019, catching four passes for 33 yards in two games. Matthews once posted a 997-yard season, but that was in 2015. In 2023, there's little to no chance he becomes fantasy-relevant, and it's probably a long shot for him to even join the active roster this season. The Vanderbilt alum can be ignored for fantasy football until further notice.

Jordan Matthews Returns To 49ers
The San Francisco 49ers re-signed tight end Jordan Matthews to a Reserve/Futures contract on Wednesday. Matthews, originally drafted in the second round as a wide receiver by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2014, has been with the 49ers since the 2019 season. However, he's been active for only four total games and played only four special teams snaps in his lone game in 2021 in Week 8 against the Chicago Bears. The 29-year-old will merely be competing for a spot on the active roster in training camp this summer, and even if he makes the squad to begin the regular season, Matthews is unlikely to become a big part of San Francisco's offense with George Kittle around.

Jordan Matthews To Work Out As A Tight End
Free-agent ex-wide receiver Jordan Matthews has added 15-plus pounds and will work out this weekend as a tight end for NFL scouts in San Diego. Matthews attended tight end University and has also been working out in Nashville with a group of tight ends that included George Kittle and Robert Tonyan. The 28-year-old entered the NFL in 2014 out of Vanderbilt as a second-round pick by the Philadelphia Eagles. He spent three years in Philly before going to the Buffalo Bills in 2017. Matthews had his best season in 2015, when he caught 85 passes for 997 yards and eight touchdowns in 16 games (12 starts). We'll have to wait and see if a team gives him a shot at his new position, but Matthews will be a long shot for fantasy relevance if he lands on a roster.

49ers Release Jordan Matthews
The San Francisco 49ers released wide receiver Jordan Matthews from the practice squad on Tuesday. Matthews never made it to San Francisco's active roster this year despite all of their injuries to key skill players. He played in just three games in 2019 -- two with the Eagles and one with the Niners -- catching four passes on 12 targets for 33 yards. Matthews' best three seasons came in his first three NFL seasons with the Eagles from 2014-2016 after he was a second-round pick out of Vanderbilt. The 28-year-old might latch on with another team's practice squad, but he's unlikely to get a shot on an active roster with just four weeks remaining in the regular season. Matthews' best season was in 2015 when he caught 85 passes for 997 yards and eight touchdowns.

Jordan Matthews With Forgettable Day
Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Jordan Matthews had three catches for 27 yards on six targets in Week 12 against the Seattle Seahawks. Even with the number of injuries at the position, Matthews is still not producing enough to enter lineups. He could be worth flex consideration next week against the Miami Dolphins, but he hasn't produced enough to put much confidence in.

Jordan Matthews Not on the Fantasy Radar for Week 12
Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Jordan Matthews is not on the fantasy radar for Week 12. Even with seemingly a handful of Eagles receivers injured, Matthews still only caught one pass in Week 11. More of the same is likely for Week 12 against the Seattle Seahawks. There's always a chance his one catch could come in the end zone, but there's nothing bankable about Matthews this week that makes him a legitimate fantasy asset.
