According to NFL Media's Ian Rapoport, the 49ers re-signed defensive end Kerry Hyder Jr. on Friday. The 31-year-old appeared in 16 games for San Francisco during the 2022-23 campaign, totaling 19 tackles and one sack. He's not expected to be an every-down defensive option this season, so his IDP upside remains severely restricted. However, Hyder will at least provide depth for a team with Super Bowl aspirations.
The San Francisco 49ers signed free-agent defensive end Kerry Hyder to a one-year, $1.5 million deal on Thursday, according to a source. Hyder had a career-high 8.5 sacks with the 49ers in 2020 and 1.5 sacks with the Seattle Seahawks last year. The 30-year-old pass-rusher also had 33 tackles (20 solo), three tackles for loss, 11 QB hits and two fumble recoveries in 15 games (seven starts) for Seattle in 2021. He will join a very talented group of Niners pass-rushers and will play in a rotational role, making him unattractive in IDP leagues. Hyder played the first three years of his NFL career with the Detroit Lions and has 20 career sacks in 71 games (23 starts).
Kerry Hyder Thinks He Can Fill Michael Bennett Role
Seattle Seahawks defensive end Kerry Hyder, one of the team's free-agent additions this offseason, thinks that he can play the Michael Bennett role in Seattle's defense. Bennett's primary job was to play as a strongside defensive end opposite speed pass-rushers on the other end. On passing downs, Bennett moved inside to play tackle. His 39 sacks remain the seventh-most in team history. Hyder, 29, had a career-high 8.5 sacks with the San Francisco 49ers last year in his first season as a full-time starter. The Seahawks hope that Hyder and Carlos Dunlap can provide a 1-2 punch on the defensive line while getting after the opposing quarterback next season. L.J. Collier and Rasheem Green can also rotate with Hyder, as both are able to play defensive end and tackle.
Kerry Hyder to Miss 2017 Season with Torn Achilles
The Lions defense suffered a huge blow on Sunday, as defensive end Kerry Hyder will miss the entire 2017 season after suffering a torn Achilles tendon in the Lions preseason opener against the Colts. Hyder led the Lions in sacks last year with eight. Hyder was expected to once again start at left end in 2017, a role that will go to Cornelius Washington, who sat Sunday with an ankle sprain. With right end Ziggy Ansah on the PUP list and backup Armonty Bryant suspended for the first four games, the Lions are going to have a very thin defensive line for most of the 2017 season. The Lions were not expected to be a high-flying D/ST play in fantasy formats, and this news drops them even lower on the waiver wire. They can be used as a stack against a poor offense, but they should not be targeted on draft day.
